This yearis team had quite a bit of bad luck in that it lost many of the games in the last three seconds of playing time. The Coach, Mr. Davis, has attributed this misfortune to a lack of the will to wm. Despite the fact that the victories were not numerous, the Captain, Dewey Potts, did a com- mendable job of leading the team throughout the entire season. The Goalie, Rick Craighill, valiantly tried to defend the goals scored. Dennis Cervino, Bill Lucas, and Tagart Steele were others who per- formed to their utmost so that the team might have the depth of strength that it needed. It is hoped by the Coach, Team Manager, and team members alike that next yearis Soccer group will have a better season, and will be able to regain the I.A.C. Championship that our school deserves so greatly. Surely, with skill, determination, and knowledge gained from this year's errors, this dream will become a reality. While not making an excessive amount of money nor playing to such audiences as did '6lVly Fair Lady, each member of the group enjoyed giving the yearly production, which was George Bernard Shaw,s light comedy, Androcles and the Lionf, With the combination of Mr. Roger Palmer's flamboyant direction and Mr. Lawrence Hoyer's ex- pert stage managing, the presentation achieved a noteworthy degree of success. The Mummers will complete their season with their traditional dinner, during which the new officers will lie elected to replace the current Presi- den and Vice-President, Alfred Page and Jeffrey Stein. After the traditional singing at the Christmas Banquet, the group's first outside engagement was before the Lions Club in Hagerstown. The Glee Club shared in two fine joint concerts, with Samuel Ready School in Balti- more, and with Hannah More Academy in Reisterstown. Each conoert was followed by an informal dance. This year's group is the finest in recent years, both in the quality of the work done and in the support and time given to a demanding discipline. Next year's schedule will include concerts with Samuel Ready School, Hannah More Academy, and Garrison Forest School. This was due to the fact that each individual performer, when called upon to do so, exercised his best efforts in the behalf of the team. That the Captain, Dewey Potts, did a magnif- icent job in every meet was evidenced by the first place awards he won in the high and low hurdle and the high and broad jump events, and by the versatility he demonstrated by doing well in the half mile relay. Other valuable team members were Chip Young, who excelled in the shot put and discus events, and ,lay Stein, who left many opponents behind him in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Three others who performed competently were Steve Megregian, Tom Jackson, and Gill Siepert. As a result of the experienced coaches and the diligent members on the team, and the fine moral support from the rest of the school, this year's Track team achieved a degree of success that was comparable with that gained by any other Track team of recent years. As the days lengthened and the maples around the circle decked themselves in their green finery, Saint James pupils frolicked on the shade-dappled grounds and enjoyed the exuberance of the awaken- ing of nature. During the golden hours after dinner, Seniors remained outside the main building to talk about classes, the forthcoming dance, masters, girls, vacations, and-of course-colleges. Behind their glib remarks and whimsical laughter, however, was the realization that the year at Saint James-a long, but successful year-was drawing to a close and with it, a stage in their lives was ending. The first act of this annual drama oc recognition for a job well done curred during the fall season, when the yearly bumper crop of new students descended upon the venerable old institution. Confusion was in- evitable, but it gradually was eradicated by a substantial sense of normalcy. Contact with family and the girl left behind were replaced by an expectant dash to the Post Office during recess and cherished vacations. When they were not pining the loss of their summer pleasures, the pupils on and off the Football field learned the valuable lesson that any sort of potentiality was useless unless it could be sufficiently converted into concrete action. Secondly, came winter with its blustery winds and fresh, crystalline snows. This was the holiday season when, during the long Christmas vacation, uneasy scholars vainly attempted to smother their pre-exam neuroses with yuletide cheer. When they returned to the campus, the students, spell of false security was completely shattered by the thunder- ing pressure of supplementary assignments and review classes. Some- how, everyone lived through this mental ordeal. Finally, the rough, brown earth was smeared with green splotches. As the chilling blasts gave Way to gentle zephyrs, spring came-and prevailed. The verdant hue of green combined with the pink and white dogwood trees to form a warm hypnosis on everyone's sensibilities. All this came and went-too soon. Then the last few wonderful days were upon the students. They invited those girls back home to come up for the best dance of the year. When their dates smiled their approval of the beautifully decorat- ed gymnasium, the members of the Social Committee realized that all the hard work was not in vain. All the students-and the Seniors, par- ticularly-acknowledged the fact that the dance symbolized Saint James School in its finest hour. Herein were mixed the elements of gentility, congeniality, and liberal- ity. It was great to be a Saint James student. together for the last time ?9!H The cllmax occurred on a balmy Saturday mornlng when for the Commencement EXCICISCS everyone made themselves more brlght and shmy than ever Humhly the Senlors knelt 1n the Chapel for the last tlme proudly they processed down the clrcle to the front of the mam hulldlng where they recelved recognltlon for Jobs well done ,Q 4 , ,K f o ,. h 7 5 . , 5 , 7 Q The Semors had f11'l1ShCd thls stage of Lhelr hves and would go on to newer actlons newer casts of characters Regaldless of the dlfferent tlmes and places ln wh1ch they mlcht fmd themselves howevel they would never forget thls drama that they had shared together , --.n' I 7 .
