Involvement, endurance, convergence and interaction are given to us as tools, and it is our work to bring them together. 2 opening opening 3 iowolvamant Back Row: Jennifer Flannery '09. George Bernard Shaw The level of involvement at Saint Ignatius reflects our amazing sense of community. Students in our school seize every opportunity and pour their soul into making it a success. Saint Ignatius provides a forum for students to become involved in endless facets of individual and group development. A student’s schedule is jam packed with athletic games, club meetings, C is for Cookie Pow-Wows, and everything else you can imagine. We become involved to make friends and pursue our passions, but we stay active because, like George Bernard Shaw says, we know that we are part of a greater community and our involvement enriches our lives and the community of Saint Ignatius. Ken Flores '06 Members of the Varsity foot- ball team Students at Saint Ignatius are unparalleled in their ability to endure. We are able to pull ourselves out of bed at four in the morning to go to the weight room and stay up late at tournaments fighting for every last point. Our will to endure is a reflection of our storied athletic history, as all of us know through the closing words of our song, “Fight! Fight! Fight!” We acquire lasting life skills at SI: on the field, in the classroom, and through relationships formed in these atmospheres that set a standard in our lives. The skills that we learn here give us the opportunity to not only persevere through life but to thrive. opening 5 Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” The wide variety of clubs and organizations at Saint Ignatius represent its liberality in allowing each student to pursue his or her passions in a supportive network, such as a CLC or Honors Society. The club at Saint Ignatius is a powerful thing: it might not change the world, but the strength and passion of the people that forms it changes each of their worlds. Students at Saint Ignatius are empowered to make a difference, and we learn that we do have the power to effect change in our school community and maybe even the world around us. We converge to make a difference for ourselves and others, and we are better for it. Members of the class of 2008 Kyle Nelson 09 6 opening Adeline Newmann '08. The outline Saint Ignatius provides injects each of us with amiable qualities that contribute to our relationships. Through our experiences and interaction with others, we fill in our outlines as well as better their lives, thus contributing to their own outlines. We are taught at Saint Ignatius how to be an Ignatian, and through our interaction with and for others we make them both Ignatians and friends for life. SI students stormed the Stownstown Chevy’s on October 26, 2005 to gorge themselves on chips and salsa. However, in the Christian spirit of generosity, this fantastic feast was for the benefit of others: those affected by Hurricane Katrina. While the 160 mph winds destroyed many homes, businesses, and lives, St. Ignatius roared back with love, prayers, and money. Wildcats always strive for success, but this desire is dramatically intensified when the goal is to help others. The Class of 2006 prevailed in the Penny War, securing the Krispy Kreme doughnut prize, but more importantly, adding a large donation to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The Unity Counsel labored tirelessly to organize fundraisers, including Chevy’s Night and the Hurricane Katrina Bake Sale. This sense of duty to be “men and women for others extends beyond the student body, spreading to the administration, faculty, benefactors, and parents. Brother Draper’s announcement about the Hurricane Katrina drive at Back to School Night prompted many parents to open both their hearts and their wallets. Astonishingly, Campus Ministry raised $50,000 the next morning. SI sent this enormous sum of money to Catholic Charities and Jesuit High School in New Orleans with a pledge to give even more. The administration transformed prayers into actions, offering spaces to students displaced from Jesuit High School in New Orleans. Some students may think that St. Ignatius’ Prayer of Generosity is an archaic holdover from genteel times of past. However, the unselfishness exhibited by the entire community in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina declares otherwise. Whether acknowledged or not. we continue to live St. Ignatius’ vision. We are SI: I proud, triumphant and most importantly, generous beyond all earthly measure. -Jillian Cunningham ‘061 Upper: Students and teachers demonstrated communal support. When asked by one of the actors, 'What is the one thing you want our company to convey to our audiences? her response was simple: Each of you has an important role to play in telling the story; you are a team where there is no room for individual ego. Remember, the vocation of acting is enforced compassion. You are doing a wonderful thing when you draw the audience in. As the di- rector, I had two hopes for Dead Man Walking. First, that you appreciated the hard work and dedication of the cast, crews, and production team; this has been a special project we have shared with each other for two and one half months and now have shared with you. My hope is that you have been touched by their generosity. -Mr. Ted Curry (director) Being cast in the role of Sister Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking this year was a major learning experience for me. I feel honored to have played the role of such an amazing woman, who is so passionate about the moral issues concern- ing capital punishment. Being given the oppurtunity to meet her in person with the cast and ask her questions helped me get into my character and made everything so real while acting the story out on stage. My four year involvement in SI Drama has been extremely rewarding. -Lizzie Fabie '06 (Sister Helen Prejean) Matthew Jones, as Matthew Poncclct. played an inmate sentenced to death. On the immersion trips, students lived in San Francisco, Costa Rica, East Los Angeles. Tijuana, Birmingham, Tacoma, Sacramento, and Salinas. In each of these places, participants lived in soidarity with their community in order to experience how other people live. To fully experience everything, students lived through the four tenents: Acting Justly, Living Simply, Building Community, and Keeping Faith. By living in a totally new place, students learned about the problems other people face such as poverty and segregation. For me, it was very interesting to compare the problems of the people in the small town of San Bias to mine. Looking back on my trip, it’s funny to think about how I worry about what college I will be attending because hardly anyone in the community I lived in even gets to have the opportunity to apply to college. One immediate result from Immersion is thanking God for the opportunities you do have. Also, on immersion, students became less ignorant about the problems people face around the world. Immersion gave participants the chance to learn more and to be less consumed in his or her own problems. Jessie Balsham, from the East Los Angeles Immersion, learned that we should deal with everyone’s problems as if it were our own. “Their problem is our problem . - Levon Eldemir '06 Costa Rica Immersion Left to Right: Matthew Sahagan, Tina Reggio. He is a veteran of over thirty- three years of service to the SI community, and in his twenty-seven years as President, he has provided inspired leadership for all: trustees, regents, faculty, students. Saint Ignatius has been truly in capable hands. Charles Dullea Kate Denning To this day. my daughter (who Father affectionately nick named Big Mol ) talks about Father Sauer as the one who strolled down the rows casually reciting, from memory, long passages — entire scenes — from Shakespeare’s plays.' Sauer. Like the pharaohs, S.I.’s President leaves his mark on the sands of San Francisco’s Sunset. The Genesis campaigns spearheaded from the Office of President have given S.l. students facilities that are second to none, but the measure of the Sauer legacy is much more than buildings and state-of-the-art classrooms and turfed fields and a pool. Who hasn’t spent an “Hour with Sauer without coming away enlightened and inspired—and more erudite with all his allusions to British literature? And there’s also all those quotable Sauerisms: “Hey. Babes. Spare me,” and “It’s good to be king. But, if it has been King Tony I, this king has walked among his subjects; from that frosh football game on a Saturday morning to a girls’ soccer game in the pouring rain to the packed stands of a Bruce-Mahoney game, the King has always been S.I.’s Number One Fan. In the classroom, his students may have trouble deciphering that unmistakable Sauer scrawl, but they do know that as members of English 403AP—403 Anthony Pudue— they have been blessed with a teacher of intelligence, wit, and compassion. Ms. Lizctte Dolan chose twelve girls to be the first participants in the intensive group, which showcased a few pieces of their own in the concert. All workshop participants needed another clement this year: dedication. Dancers now needed to attend class two days a week (either Tuesday or Saturday for jazz with Meredith Galvin), and a company ballet class on Friday with Mr. Ted Curry. Intensive members worked an extra three hours on Wednesday. What else changed in the dance program? Look at the title of the concert. Boxed In. For the first time, the dance concert was held in the Wicgand theater, also known as the 8lack Box. With a larger stage and a better floor, more artistic freedom was possible, while dancers weren't hitting each other in the face quite as often. Our practices were not restricted to the field or West Sunset. From Lake Merced to the Golden Gate Bridge, our workouts were not only painful and demanding, but also scenic and rewarding. The pressure and adrenaline that a runner feels as he toes the starting line is indescribable. Anyone who works through this fear, regardless of their speed, deserves respect. Cross Country is not so much a race as it is a battle. It is a battle between your body telling you to stop, and the part of your brain telling you that you must go on. Every week, each of us went through a real-world of “mind over matter. We are cross country runners, not joggers. Joggers sweat, runners bleed. The shadow visit lets 8th graders feel what a day in the life of one of our students is like, and it lets them talk to students who are young enough to still relate to them. The Open House allows 8th graders' parents to see what S.l. is like and ask students what their experiences have been like. Here, in a crowded center covered with haphazardly coiled network and power cables, in a place populated around- the-clock with distressed teachers and stressedout students. I find myself most fulfilled. Prior to working with the IT Department. I really did not grasp the potential universality and human connection of technology. Technology is not simply bmited to the relationship between programmer and processor, man and machine. It is not onedimcnsional. Technology exists so that the people who use it may themselves interact in more meaningful, captivating ways It allows all types of people-even those who on first glance do not seem to have anything in common-to relate with one another. Over my years in Tech. I have probably been in contact with, in some way or another, almost every organization on campus. I straighten out folder permissions for the Yearbook staff. I run Audio Video for the Health Department presentations viewed by parents. I helped create the Power Point presentation for St. Ignatius' production of the play Dead Man Walking . I assist the librarians in solving printer issues. I guide dub leaders in the creation of dub websites I helped refurbish twenty-one computers for donation to Magis I install software for several of those distressed teachers, and I reset forgotten passwords for hundreds of those stressed-out students. As the Class of 2006 prepares for graduation, rt is important that we reflect on what exactly we have accomplished over the years. The very first members of the Tech Club took part m the IT Internships in the summer of 2003. and nine of its thirteen interns were nvembers of the class of '06 The very first year of Tech Club we held web design workshops and video game days. The second year we refined the club towards service. This year, we have branched out to robotics. But no matter where Tech Club goes in the coming years. I want members to retain the same spirit of service and curiosity its original founders. •Michael Santa Maria. It is heavily steeped in tradition, yet this year we extended our responsibilities beyond our normal realm. In the fall, winter, and spring we sponsored varsity sport socials, inviting all varsity athletes in that season to attend. At these socials we had a BBQ and some type of fun (yet still competitive) sporting event. We also sponsored a “Giving Tree,” based on Shel Silverstein’s book (thanks to all who donated!). Submissions come in during the middle of winter. And so before April when we send it off to the printer. We read over entries, some poems, some prose And when we have finished, you’ll see what we chose. (Some work on the artwork, some work on the layout While others goof off and their work others may doubt.) We all make the call on what we deem to inherit That style and that depth that we call literary merit. Besides our great labor toward the end of the year We make the arrangements for Youth Speaks to come here To slam out their flows for you to rejoice and perhaps be inspired to find your own poetic voice. Now do you see the cycle? You will: Be inspired, you'll write, then it’s into The Quill.” -The Quill organizations 139 organizations organizations 1. Nicole Roger. Cristina Lauretta. I sprinted down the stairs and tripped over my feet and fell right in front of these seniors. They were nice, but it was still embarassing. One time in World History, my teacher asked me 'What bad thing happened in Greece?' and I said The Holocaust.' On my first meeting day, I was confused with the schedule, so I accidentally went to an empty classroom. I spent about five min- utes thinking that I was early for my class, so I took my stuff out and got settled. From the very first day of school until now, the freshman class remains the biggest and weirdest class of the school year. The hallways are filled with bustling freshman, whining about the swim unit in PE, talking about the cool, new Northface jacket or swooning about the Matt Jones. The year sparked wih firsts like going to the wrong class, picking up trash for detention, our very first Bruce-Mahoney as a student of SI, or being psyched about going to the Christmas Dance. A sense of importance touched our hearts when we began to learn new languages, receive polos as gifts from relatives, or made a sports team. We finally belonged to the com- mon chant that we've heard of before, We are SI. Nevertheless, we've spent some time in the dark when we are faced with embarassment or disappointment, such as getting kicked out of the library, opening the wrong locker, or trying out for things and not making it. Yet, we've always kept our heads up, and never got angry, except when the vending machines ate our money. people 181 Alyson Murphy Kathryn Musumeci Nidal Nasrah Kyle Nelson Matthew Ng Nicholas Nguyen Stella Nnodim Nicole O'dea Thomas O'Malley Liam O'Reilly Timothy O'Sullivan Vitalis Obidi Pilar Odom Frank Okomendy Andrew Ontano Tatiana Padilla Maude Page Margaret Palazzolo Mary Palazzolo Arianna Papalexopoulos Matthew Park Dominic Pasquali Catherine Paulino Elizabeth Paulsen Dustin Pearson Kimberly Pia Daniel Price Charlotte Pruden Gianna Puccmelli Lauren Quan Erie Quesada Peter Quinn Anne Radsliff Drew Raher Adriana Reineckc Gabriel'c Reineckc 1 Dylan John 2 Liz Watters and Megan Tracy 3 Gabe Barrios 4 Devin Dunn and Danny Price 5 George Coker 6 Margaret 7 Kristen Herbert Kevin Reiser Gabriela Reyes Samuel Richman Sarahi Rivas Sarah Rizzo Sofia Felice Rizzo Denise Rollandi Jacob Rose Joshua Ruck Alexander Rudnicki Kyle Rmz John Ryan Mary Ryan William Ryan Elizabeth Sancimino Natalie Sangiacomo 182 people Larion Martin Santiago Charles Emmanuel Samos Chelsea Santos Dcdrick Sarzaba Matthew Sauers Danielle Schaefer Matthew Schimpf Adriana Schivo Tara Schwall Michael Sebastineli Bambi Scltenrich Annalyse Sheppard Robert Sherburne Elias Shikaloff Michael Shymanski Vincent Silveira Georgia Silvia Mcaza Simmons Jessica Sinks Kiyoshi Smith Trevor Smith Allysha Smith-Catley Kris Sockotio Kyle Sockotjo Rick Solomon Matthew Sotto RicheMe Spedus Scan Spiers Pailm Srukhosit Kdly Stanghclhni Charles Stephens Kyle Stranahan Samuel Strclkoff Victoria Student Timothy Sturm Madeline Summa Jacqueline Sun Rex Suter Daniel Tan Matthew Tate Matthew Tayag Colette Taylor Mansol Terrazas Manse Thadani Joshua Thierry Jeffrey Thomas Jessica Times Jari-Lee Tolentino Dino Tonelli Meghan Tracey Margret Tramor Andrcanna Tzortzis people 183 Rebecca Unroh Nicholas Urbano Carolyn Vinmcombc Sfoane Viola Nicholas Wagner Ricardo Wassmer IV Elizabeth Watters William Welsh Shawn Wen Laura West Sydney West Conor Wilkes Andrew Wong Stephanie Wong Kevin Woods Theresa Woods Sean Yates Austin Yau Julia Yrani Angela Yuen Alexa Zapletal 1 Andreanna Tzortis. You can't use the excuse, Tm a Freshman, I didn’t know... We still have 4th period lunch, but we are third on the school's food chain. Welcome to life as a sophomore! Although seemingly uninteresting at first, sophomore year is full of new experiences. It is the shift from Lower to Upper-lower classmen that involves changes and adjustments. Although the thought of new classes intimidates some, sophomore year opens up a world of opportunities to meet new friends and become closer to old ones. For the first time, we get dibs on prized eating spots and know which cafeteria foods to stay away from. We are finding our place alongside the second and third floor lockers, although some still experience the dreaded “bottom locker”... (Hey, it has to be somebody!). The majority of our class is celebrating their Sweet Sixteens, and you know what that means... driving! Whether we take 4,h period Driver’s Ed here at SI, on-line, or elsewhere (Mr. Lee - the coolest), permits are a major step towards that beloved license. There is the occassional exception of a lazy sophomore who never gets around to doing Driver's Ed, but you know... licenses weren’t made for everybody anyway. New classes are also a major change. We no longer listen to how there really is a point to algebra or how the Neanderthal evolved. Instead, we dance with Mrs. Galvin or listen to music with Mr. Sablinsky. The daily break from traditional academics is greatly appreciated. In the end, Sophomore year is about getting involved in academics, in community service, with our friends, and in extracurriculars. When we wake up late this summer, about to face the most difficult year of our career at SI, we can take with us everything from sophomore year. 192 people Michelle Abcla Susan Abcllera Gabiicl Abinantc Randrca Acda Robertson Allen Natalie Anaya Vasilios Angclopoulos Reginald Antonio Kevin Apolinario Alexander Arncst Juan Carlos Arricta Jake Avella Jennifer Azofcifa Carolyn Badillo Francesca Badiola Melissa Bailey Katherine Balcstrcri Kathryn Barultch Nicola Beaumont Drew Bcaurlmc Byron Becker Kyle Bell Alyssa Bergcrson Aimce Bidegamberry Hannah Bigalkc Sophie Bigalkc llama Black Dominique Bon no William Borba Sean Boyd Erika Brickley Marjan Brown ■ 1. Matt Leland For many of us here at SI, the ’05-’06 school year was the time to get behind that wheel. On top of new classes, new faces, and new dress code regulations, we found ourselves praying over permit test results and dreaming about that perfect car. But, of course, driving and the responsibilities that come with it meant different things to different people. Based on a survey taken during the first quarter of our sophomore year, we discovered a range of opinions from “I’ll die if I don’t have my license soon” to “Stay far, far away with that car key!” Either way, the question of driving was on everyone’s mind. Whether realizing that it was possible to fail a permit test 3 times or passing with flying colors, we took similar steps to the driver’s seat that landed us where we are today. 1. Lena Frostcstad. This ear, all of us chose how we would fill the slots in our hectic schedules not taken up with WWII, The Catcher in the Rye, the Periodic Table, or the 10 Commandments. We experienced the benefits of a class that we looked forward to everyday or, perhaps, the tragedy of realizing that music, dance, and art were not our true callings. The relief, excitement, or regret that filled us as a result of our choices made these experiences something to remember in our career at SI. Those three syllables mean more than any of us can fathom: a year of fifth period lunch, driver's licenses, class rings, prom, retreat, varsity jackets, and immersion. This is the year we make our mark—on the field, on the stage, in the classroom. We learn the natural laws of the universe simultaneously with the universal laws of humanity. We put our best feet forward in CLCs, Christian service, social justice, peer counseling. This is the year we realize that high school, as it is just beginning, is also ending. This bittersweet serendipity initiates us as true upperclassmen; wary of the brevity of our time left in this place, but ready to squeeze every last drop of vitality it has to offer. Freshman year brought a new perspective to our wide-open eyes; sophomore year was spent discovering our place in it. Now, as juniors, is the chance to explore that perspective further, a chance to find out where we thrive and what we contribute to each other. We discover what it is to be an Ignatian; more than that, we discover what it is to be an adolescent, what it is to love and be loved, what it is to try and to learn from missteps. These nine months of growth will lead us strong into our final year at SI, and our ultimately lasting memories. Let us take life head on, with our classmates by our side and the rallying cheer of “07. -Danielle Christopher 212 people Hannah Abarquez Elizabeth Adler Ryan Aguirre Christie Aiello Jessica Alciandrmo Thomas Anderson Katrina Andres James Andrews Nina Anguiano Robert Anicctti Kayla Arangcon Michelle Argucllcs Michaclla Armanino Joseph Armenta Katherine Arscmo Shannon Banahan Christine Barbicri John Barisone Thomas Barth Ronan Baynes John Beaulieu Michael Sellings James Bennett Katherine Bergstrom Giuhana Blasi Christopher Blohm Britney Blythe Claire Bonelli Kristina Bonnett Andrew Borella Anthony Bovo Richel Briones Alexander Brown Ryan Brown Victor Bull Brendan Byrne Jeffrey Byrnes Lorenzo Cabrera Daree Campbell Mackenzie Campbell Nicole Canepa Kandis Canonica Shelly Capulong Gillian Carpenter Coulton Carrol Gina Castagnola Ryan Cavalier Mark Celia Sherry Chak Colby Chambers Corey Chan Meredith Chandler Craig Chcc Ella Christoph Danielle Christopher Derrck Chu Andrew Clark. They say that junior year is the most important year of high school. And the hardest. The mind collapses after a difficult day of work and play. Homework replaces evenings of watching televition. The look doesn’t seem to fit; it’s too soon. And yet, here we are, a confused bunch of kids thrust onstage and expected to play a leadership role. This is a crossroads in every student’s life. Do we simply put on a mask of apathetic “coolness and play the part? Or do we utilize the stress of attention and rise to the occasion, growing into true leaders? This I believe is what distinguishes the SI seniors, this class of 2006. We’re risers. Day after day we pour our minds and hearts into everything we do here, from social justice to stage crew, from magis to mixed chorus, from dance to diving. Even after a late night of AP homework and college apps, we wake each morning to give all of ourselves to this Ignatian community, sometimes even sacrificing our body in the process. But why do we do it? Are we just a bunch of overachievers trying to get out of SI and into a good college? I think not. We’re too good at what we do for such superficial motivation. The truth is, we’re a passionate people. We work until we can’t keep our eyes open out of, dare I say, love. We see it every day in all that we do. This community is great not out of endowments, donations, or well kept facilities (though that helps). SI is great became we make it so; its value is in its people. And it is its people that will carry this school into the future. We the class of 2006 have ridden the crest on a wave of change that has driven SI forward in recent years, surging through and shifting its very structure, and it appears this swell will continue to grow until it breaks upon the shores of eternity. The departure of such perpetual, foundational faculty as Father Sauer and the arrival of dynamic new faces parallel our class’ shoving off toward new horizons. Though we will soon join these men and women as former SI attendees, we too have left a legacy of love, and hopefully, we have set the right tone for the next 150 years of Ignatian education. 232 -Ian Randolph Natalie Abi nante 'On my way here, where I am now, I've learned to fly. My date's friend's father owned a resturaunt on Irving and he picked up the $150 tab. -Colin Culligan Getting in a car accident after Junior irom was pretty fun. I can't remember night and I wore a back brace for months after the night. Talk about a| time! -Kiera Quinlan What is your best Father Wright excuse? Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. -Forrest Gump What is your most memorable Bruce Mahoney game ? Definately the basketball Bruce game sophomore year. It was so scandalous! Matt Jones made his Varsity debut and the score was even the whole time. The fact that we were in Kezar added to the excitement. L. -Victoria Giampaoli The football game junior year! 34-0. Shutting out SH and demolishing them by 34 points was fantastic. -Steve Lopez The baseball game freshman year was insane. The team pulled it off and secured another Bruce Mahoney victory.
