Yet few students have ever stopped to think about the meaning of this phrase; what exactly is SI? Is Saint Ignatius merely a school campus? Or is it a community of students whose individual talents, opinions, and personalities contribute to a distinct high school experience? The cover image of the letters “SI” mirroring themselve pro- claims the theme of reflection, a theme appropriate for a year with the symmetri- cal digits “2002.” Hence, this book seeks to define our school’s identity by examin- ing the individual pieces of our commu- nity. The boys’ cross-country team capurting the league championship, the winter Pops soloist singing from The Sound of Music, the debate team perfect- ing the art of rhetoric, the cast of The Ser- vant of Two Masters depicting a humor- ous story, the student council members selling Krispy Kreme donuts, and the jun- ior cramming for his U.S. History test all contribute to the energy and atmosphere that is SI. On the corner, young children were buying ice cream from a man pushing a cart. Various people walked up to us and welcomed us to the neighborhood. Music echoed out of the small Dolores Mission Church across the street. When I saw this, I knew the next two weeks of my life would be amazing. We left for our East LA Immersion on June 10, 2001, ready, willing, and a little nervous about living in one of the most violent, gang- ridden areas in the United States. Sharing a realistic experi- ence of communal living, we opened up as a group to each other an to those destitute, with whom we formed unbreakable relationships, which we have renewed since our initial Immersion trip. River Sims’ approach, fulfilling need where need is seen is a noble and practical way to help the poor and downtrodden of San Francisco.” -Rick Scott anoiaiemml 25 Immersions International Immersions El Salvador “Community has a new definition in our eyes—not only a collection of people but also a feeling of be- longing to a group of people. We learned from them; they learned from us.” -Alena Chaps ‘02 n July 21. Allie, Gina, Jen, Julie, Kelly, Molly, Ivan, and I embarked on a journey that forever changed the way we viewed our country, our attitude, and ourselves toward the world. Through our immersion experience to El Salva- dor, we all learned what being men and women for and with others truly means. We learned about our own materialism, our country's disturbing foreign policy, and our interconnectedness and sameness with every human that walks the planet. The first week we spent in a small village, Guarjila, about two hours away from the capital. ...The backbone of the youth community is a group, started by former Jesuit John Guillano, named Tamarindos, to which Juven belonged. After the long civil war. the group was formed to encourage community and discourage destructive behavior. Many of the Tamarindos shared their stories with us. A young man our age named Mauricio told us about his experience during the the war. A shiver shot up my spine to think that my government contaminated the childhood of Mauricio while I watched Sesame Street and finger-painted, totally oblivious to others’ struggles. Guarjila was a time of sharing and community. After the small village of Guarjila, we moved into the capital and largest city, San Salvador. We spent most of the time sightseeing. One place that inspired powerful feelings was the cathedral where Archbishop Oscar Romero was assassinated. ...We passed the next two days in another village, Usalatan. Our sadness dissolved into the joy of folk dancing and sharing stories with a local youth group. When we returned to San Salvador, we met with yet another youth group, Nueva Generacion. They gave us a bleak tour of the city and shared their struggles with drugs, gang violence, and hopelessness. San Salvador and Usalatan extended our community. The most beneficial result of the Immersion program for our group was discovering a sense of community. We formed a community within our group, but, most importantly, a community with El Salvador Group: Jenny Driscoll, Alexandra Livezey, Kelly Kramer. Gina Julie Casey, Ivan Molly Van Houten, Alena Chaps (with directors Pat Cody and Jorge Garcia) the people we encountered in El Salvador. Community has a new definition in our eyes—not only a collection of people, but also a feeling of belonging to a group of people. We learned from them; they learned from us. The feeling of community could be seen through friendliness, kindness, and openness. Relationships become the most important possessions in one’s life. Returning to the United States was difficult. I felt disillusioned with the govern- ment and the materialistic attitude that capitalism creates. No, I did not come back a communist (whatever that is), but I came back with a critical eye for the world around me. I find myself struggling to find the words to describe all that my trip encompassed. Inevitably I’ll spout, “It was ... good.”The inquirer, satisfied with that answer, leaves it at that and changes the subject. “But wait!” I'm screaming on the inside. “No, that's not it; good is not it - good doesn’t come close to it. Good is this awful word that slips into my vocabulary, just waiting for the moment when something big and meaningful needs to be said, then jumps into the spotlight and prevents anything from following after. Going to Guatemala wasn't just “good.” It was amazing; and suprising; and beautiful; and inspiring; and wonderful; and horrible; and tiring; and disgusting; and eye opening; and fun; and challenging. At times I hated it, but overall, taking into account every thing and every moment...I loved it. ...I can see tangible changes in myself. Not Pictured: Faculty members Paul Hanley and Sarah Curran “There seem to be no words to explain how my life has changed since Derry.”-Amanda Nichols Marie Malone ‘02 Ireland iving together for three weeks, we all slept in one room on a cement floor and cooked in a small kitchen. The “Stardust quickly became our home away from home. On weekdays, we split up and worked in various parts of the city for different organizations that deal or play a role in Northern Ireland and the Troubles. The Bloody Sunday Trust was a common worksite, along with Sister Brigid’s daycare center, the Peace and Reconciliation Group and the Gasyards. We discovered the depth of the hatred that lies between the Loyalist and Nationalist parties through the work we did and the many different people we talked to. ...The experiences that we each received are unique and hard to explain to those who haven't been fortunate enough to go through similar experiences. Iwhen trying to tell others about the emotions and events I encountered and discovered in Derry, I always end up at a loss for words, finding myself replying that “It was the best experience of my life” or something else stupid like that. There seem to be no words to explain how my life has changed since Derry. We seem to be more aware of global situa- tions, maybe just because we opened our eyes to the complexities of our everchanging world and took the time to notice the ongoing struggles of different cultures. A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. We run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into an exhausting pace, and then at the end. punish himself even more. Nobody is going to win a 5.000 meter race after running an easy 2 miles. Not with us. If we lose forcing the pace all the way, well, at least we can live v ith our- selves. And do it all for SI. •Greg Williams “The first half was pretty stimulating. With amazing plays from every player, we went into the half time three points ahead. We were all pumped. The game was far from over, but we were content being ahead. We kept the lead and started to expand on it in the second half. SH had a short run while we were plagued by a couple of turnovers. We were not al- lowed to drink wa- ter in the hallways or in classrooms. The only accept- able places to con- sume beverages were the Commons or Student Center. Students died of thirst, while teach- ers sipped away at their big mugs. Along with breath- alizers came lights at the dances. The lights were shinning bright as students danced the night away. Many students objected by not danc- ing and instead sit- ting on the dance floor. For the Christ- mas Dance, the lights were lowered signifi- cantly. but were still not totally off. This Year... Breathalizers came to the SI dances this year. They were unwelcomed by many, but were necessary. When you entered the school dances, you had to roll dice; if you happened to roll a seven, you had to take the breathalizer test. Eight Mondays a semester, we were required to stay at school until 3:10. These “Meeting Days” were troublesome to many students. On these long and slow days, we would have a certain activity between first and second periods. During these periods we would have activities such as Reconciliation, Drug and Al- cohol Talks, Guest Speakers, College and Counsel- ing talks, or a free period (time to roam free). This year on several Fridays, the student council sold Krispy Kremes at recess. This was not a fundraiser but a fun activity for our school. Students would race to the gym foyer to get to the fluffy, delicious doughnuts before they sold out. Some people even bought them by the boxes for their classrooms. Finally, girls could show their ankles but hide their calves as capri pants were al- lowed back into the dress code this year. Technical Direction by Nick Sablinsky. 17 The Pajama Game As The Pajama Game performed its final performance on April 27th, Banaan Theatre was filled with cheers and a standing ovation. This year's musical, The Pajama Game, proved to be a success with sold out performances and even an added performance. But behind the success is a world of grueling rehersals, stress, difficult music, and script memorization. Yet the interminable rehersals seemed beneficial with blossoming friendships and a love of performing. Practices were Mondays-Fridays from 4-7 PM explains Alpha Mulugeta. As the show neared, practices ran as late as 9PM. They were really tiring and some people were known to fall asleep on stage! Rehersals also included difficult orchestral music. Heidi Tuason agrees: Piano music was pretty difficult (big chords, crazy key changes. 7 sharp 6 flat music) but with practice, I began to love the music. Not only did the musicians have to learn difficult parts, but the actors had to memorize their scrips. When asked how she learned her parts, Lourdes Long replied. I learn by standing on stage and doing it, so it’s an emotional memory, which is ultimately better for performances. With months of rehersals, the music starts, the lights dim, and the show finally starts. Lauren Sanchez describes the feeling of performing on stages: Once the show starts, everything changes. There's a zap of energy in everyone that makes the show what it is. Although the actors and musicians went through exaustion and tiredness, it was truely worth it. They formed profound friendships, as well as gained deep respect for each other. Kathryn Hart even learned something life altering: Being on stage is that best feeling on the world.
