In many ways, the beauty and unique- ness of the community we built this school year of 1998-1999 mirrors the beauty of a sunset. The ath- lete, the scholar, the artist, the leader...each of these members of the S.I. community contributes a unique and brilliant color to the sunset, just as crimson, pink, orange, and yellow merge to create a breathtaking phenomena each night. Also, just as the sun contin- ues to be bright and beautiful as it sets, so S.I. con- tinues to shine as a new milennium approaches. This year especially, the student body truly shone. An array of different talents and ideas combined to form a student body no one will soon forget. In- spired by the leadership of the Student Council, we came together to study, worship, play, act, and, above all, serve others. In doing so, we cast a light out to all around us. William Shakespeare once noted, “Consider that day lost whose setting sun views from thy hand no noble action done.’' We don’t consider this day lost. In fact, we excelled repeatedly throughout the year. We started the year with a rcgainance of fe- male majority on the Student Council, a Student Council who strove to further school unity in ev- erything they did. Most notably, they reached this goal by creating and advocating the People for Oth- ers Plan, a program in which each club and orga- nization did community service as a group. An- other noteworthy aspect of this year was the hours of hard work that paid off for many sports teams. 2 opening spread opening spread 3 4 opening spread Th e Varsity girls volleyball team won CCS, the Var- sity boys basketball team was ranked 1 in the state, and the Varsity football team nearly went undefeated in WCAL. Most unforgettable of all that happened this year, though, was the winning back of the Bruce Mahoney trophy with victories in both football and basketball. The sun sets no more beautifully than when the Bruce is here at S.I. where it belongs. Hopefully, no one can nor will ever forget every- thing which shaped our community this year. How could one ever forget the events, the faces, the smiles, the friendships which we shared? The pic- tures and the writing that make up this book are a feeble attempt to capture these memories, an attempt to capture the beauty of the sunset. The Class of 1999 has made this year all the more memorable. The sunset, which is symbolic of this year, is so beautiful because of the leadership, spirit, and talents which each member of the senior class gave so willingly to the community. As they leave St. Ignatius, they now face a world of new experi- ences. Their role this year has given us confidence that they can and will go out into this world and share all their gifts with everyone they meet, just as they shared their gifts with our community this year. Good luck. Class of 1999, in all you do. The rest of the student body, too, faces a new era. We shared a wonderful year this year, and it is our belief that we are well-prepared to carry on the tra- dition of excellence which the Class of 1999 exem- plified and lead the way into the next milennium. The year 2000 is on the horizon. opening spread 5 Spirit and Community give S. I. flavor Student life encompasses all aspects of what it means to be an Ignatian. To be a student at S.l. is to be an athlete, an artist, a per- former. a leader. The Wildcat spirit is a key ingredient of student life. It inspires each individual student to take advantage of the myriad of opportunities available at S.I., making each Wildcat feel part of a close-knit, vibrant, and diverse community. From the freshmen to the seniors, each person contributes to the S.l. com- munity through his or her service, spirituality, and abilities. Spirit and community add flavor by giv- ing all the students the strength and courage to be their best. One would be hard-pressed to find a student at S.l. who does not challenge him or her- self to do so. What makes S.l. unique is that the Taking a break from tough school students thrive on this challenge, such as senior Erica Lipton, who notes: “The challenge S.l. pro- vides is good to prepare you for life. This year, the Student Council successfully strove to promote unity among diversity by advocating the People for Others plan, in which clubs joined together to raise money or volunteer their time for a charity. Unity, the goal of this school year, was also brought about through the efforts of the cheer- leaders, who led the student body in spirit in innumerable ways. This amazing spirit and community which inspires and challenges students to live up to their full potential makes being a student at S.l. unlike being a student anywhere else. 6 student life opening student life opening 7 CLASS of ST. IGNATIUS I 8 Class of 1999 4!) 1999 IGH SCHOOL Class of 1999 9 SPIRIT The mere thought of it sends a chill down your spine. Its monstrous, overwhelming, and empowering...and there’s no escaping it. Its the S.l. spirit. This extraordinary characteristic of our community is part of what makes S.l. so wonderfully unique. The pride we take in our school over- flows into our cheering sections, rallies, spirit weeks, and our everyday student life. Led by the spontaneous and energetic cheerleaders, student council, and rally committee, we express this pride in a variety of ways. This year, our spirit was evident in everything from disco dress-up day to a mock circus in the Student Center at lunch to a Jerry Springer show at the first rally of the year. Whether watching cheerleaders dance for the crowd at a field hockey game or hearing the deafening roar of a mass of students at a Brucc-Mahoney game, you can’t miss this incredible S.l. spirit. The words of junior Jenny Norman sum it up: “It’s the S.l. spirit that makes me proud to be a Wildcat. 10 spirit W E E K ‘98 spirit 11 Immersions While Mountain Apache 2 by Val Ibarra For two weeks, none strangers, which included: Giarrusso. Fetidyo. mysclf(Vbl). Tcrika Tischcr. Jen Broughton. Whitney Baugh, Fiona Dunbar. Chris Byrd and Dan David, discovered each other amidst light- ning storms and Arizona sunsets. We lived in Alehesay High School in Whiteriver. Arizona, on the reservation. Despite some grunt work that involved fish. sandpaper, and rubber gloves, we had a great time. Fdgar Perry, a cultural representative of the White Mountain Apaches, had us help him build Wiki-ups as a honorable gesture for his 83-year-old mother. I le taught us a lot about the Apache ways and their emphasis on the health of body and spirit. The Apache term, respectively, is CH-UNC-I.IN. In retro- spect. vve realized that although we perhaps missed out on some involvement in tltc culture, vve came away with so much more than any of us had anticipated. Due to days of riding in the van. our close living quarters, a serendipitous awakening in Gcronimo's cave, and an awesome 4th of July, we came away with such an appreciation lor each other that we knew would follow us into our senior year. During our first week, vve lived at Dorothy's Place of the Franciscan Workers, a soup kitchen anil a halfway house, located on Skid Row in Salinas. Ca. Wc also lived with interns and students from Ohio. The first night, the girls witnessed a drug bust outside of their w indow. During the day. we prepared meals, serv ed guests, baby-sat kills, cleaned bath facilities, gave out food on Skid Row. and remodeled a playroom. In our free time, we Hiked and played basketball with the guests, went lo a Narcotics Anonymous meeting, and grocery shopping for the soup kitchen. We farmed at the Urban development center, and played with kids at the mi- grant labor camp. Our work brought us to Soledail Gon oales. Capitola. Monterey. Carmel. Seaside. Pebble Beach, and Santa Cruz. Our second week, vve camped out in tents as counselors at Camp St. Francis for kids of migrant farm workers. After long days of work, humbly observed Skill Row from a balcony at Dorothy's Place. Now. we bring our service back home with Up 'Til 3' CLC. Tucson by Jaclyn Verducci This past July and August. Allison Cola. Sierra Fish. Gina Pclleriti, Francesca Rivera. Jaclyn Verducci. Kevin Wong. Julie Yap. Karen Cota, and Liz Swarthout immersed ourselves in the culture of Tucson, Ari- zona. While we were in Tucson, wc worked at the battered women's shelter, taking care of the children and cleaning up the center's garden. We also worked with the Yaqui Indian tribe children. Our group trav- eled to Nogales. Mexico, where wc had the opportunity to live with families and experience their daily way of life. We are grateful for our experience and will treasure what wc learned for the rest of our lives. 12 immersions Whitt Mountain Apache -1 I aura Ronuin. After the many cookouls (slaved over by IX-nnis) at Edgar's mother's house, we felt completely accepted by all of the Apache people, and felt included in the numerous generations of Ldgars family. Between meeting and speak- ing with organizations including UNSITRAGUA, Guatemala's National Union, and CONAVIGUA. the association of widows and mothers of the dis.ippearcd. as well as students' rights, lands' rights, and peasants' rights groups, we established ourselves in solidarity with the people of Guatemala and were embraced by their potent spirit. The spectrum of individuals we encountered also touched us: from the workers on slrikc at the Chiquita Banana plantations, to the student activists at La Univcrsidad San Carlos, to our friend Samantha la ladron. and by a fortuitous stroke of fate. Rigobcria Mcnchu Turn- who told us to always, wherever (we) are in the world, work directly w ith the people in dire need. Combating a taxi incident, sickness, and a few bus ndes directly from hell, we created a community of nine individuals dedi- cated to participating in the struggle of the Guatemalans. Through the guidance of the wonderful workers at the Posada Ixchal and our families in Villalobos II. we were immersed in the different and distinet reality that is the nation of Guatemala. Guaymas «I by Jim Bonner Ticks, cockroaches, simplistic meals. 115 degree heat, digestion set-backs, and a broken toilet, fridge, oven, stov e, sink, shower, and air conditioner are all what Laura Forrest. Jim Bonner. Katie Waller. Danielle Lanam. Erin Lapping. Angela Bauman. Alex Miller, and Jasmine Wong conquered upon our two weeks of a memorable immersion in Guaymas. Mexico. Upon arriving on a one-way airport, we were first introduced to our contact, Sister Fontana. who got our van stuck in the mud. T hen came live culture shock as we caught our first glimpses of a culture entirely different from our own. Every morning we w oke w ith the sun and took a bus to a nursing home w here we alone dug a 70 yard trench to put in a high-pressure water system. At noon, we'd travel back to the Casa Franciscans anil then serve free meals at the soup kitchen called Meson dc Jesus (Inn of Jesus). In (he afternoons, we hiked up (he hill to live outdoor Chapel to lead activities with the children of the area, Nights would be spent cooking dinner for each other and playing OK. Would you rather... Overall, Guaymas touched us all in different ways. But most importantly, it showed us a new way of living simply and happily w ith the values centered on family and community. As much as we tried to help and change Guaymas with our presence, in the end. it was actually Guaymas that changed us. ROCK ON! El Salvador 1 by Christina PavlolT El Salvador «1 group (Lorena Marquez. Jake Hale. Christina PavlolT. Gaby Giuliani, I larold Chan-Rosalcs. Susanna Farbcr. Tripp Jones, and Anna BclonogofT. along with leaders Caroline Pieters and Mary Sw itzer) had an amazing experi- ence. The journey began in San Salvador, where vve played basketball with a youth group, met with community leaders and government officials, visited the Univer- sity of Central America, where the Jesuits were murdered during the war. and gave a presentation on composting to a ninth grade class, as well as other things that arc too numerous to mention. After San Salvador, we made the treacherous v oyage to the town of Las Vucltas. where we were immediately befriended by all of the children in the town. In Las Vucltas. we drove to Guarjila. Our first project in Guarjila was planting trees. We worked for two days transporting and planting saplings to aid in the reforestation of the Salvadorian countryside. ThcTamarindo youth group put on a play for us and took us to visit the high school in Chalate City. We made a lasting impression on the town by painting a mural on the wall in front of the Tamarindos' meeting house. Wc learned about life in El Salvador from the families that welcomed us into their homes and from all of the new friends we made. The group built a strong sense of solidarity each other and with the people of El Salvador. immersions 13 El Salvador 2 by Brian Hurley By ihe end we wanted for nothing, save a hard nap. It's been two big weeks, and. man, I feel immersed. Layers of Salvadoran dirt entrenched in our pores attested to the wealth of work that Brian Hurley. Chris Martinez. Elena Orque. and Jessica Perez had given to the spirited compassionate, impoverished people of San Salvador. Memories resurface daily: singing Salvadorian folk songs by moonlight with Max. the crazy civil war veteran, leading an army of school- children on a playground clean-up project only to discover fresh trash the next day. soccer and baseball with the inner-city kids, wasted teenagers clinging to their exalted bottles of glue, the elderly whose humble eyes shone as we deliv- ered them enough rice and vegetables to make it through the week, fingernails scuffed and the dirty from building shacks, learning firsthand the myths and realities of poverty, freedom, and oppression, and the meals-chccse and torti- llas and rice and beans given without reservation or expectation by destitute families whose finest china was cheap plastic. Through all our complaining, pouting, and outright dissension we knew that San Salvador was breaking us and making us new. and when we got home. I refused to take a shower for fear of washing away my hard-earned Salvadoran dirt. Tijuana by Marisa McCarthy This summer eight seniors. Vicki Who’s your daddy? Tcrhcyden. Steven Silvestri. After the meals and clean up. the group got to interact with the community of Tijuana. visiting houses, talk- ing with the elderly, and most significantly, playing with the children With much diffi- culty, we hail to leave Tijuana, and travel to Tucson. Arizona We met with an organiza- tion that we would be traveling to Nogales with calleri Borderlinks. In Nogales, we met w ith representatives from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, local merchants, lawyers, political party leaders, and then visited a maquilla ami a local orphanage. In Nogales, we stayed with captains liv ing on land invasions without electricity and water. The people ofTijuana and Nogales, despite their lack of resources, welcomed us into their homes and offered us all they had. We all gained so much from this trip, so much more than we were able to give back. Hopefully our memories of our experiences will never fade. San Francisco Maybe we didn't change the world. Maybe we didn’t end hunger or homelessness or poverty. But we did what we could to help, and in our ow n way. we touched lives. We gave a little bit of ourselves- our gifts and talents, our minds and souls- lo people w ho arc alone, desperate, and in need. Audrey Harris, Lewis de Dios. Jaehec Lee. Alexa Smialovvicz, Angi Barriscne. Father Miller and I spent two weeks liv ing within the East Los Angeles community. We were able to work with F. Boyle and Homeboy Industries. We stayed in a church in the Hollenbeck Park district, which has one of the highest concentrations of gang activity in the country. Between working with the gang members, serving food to members of the community, at- tending Board of Supervisors meetings to protect welfare cuts, singing in a peace march and working with runaway teenagers in 11 oily wood, and working with AIDS hospices in the greater L.A. area, we were kept very busy. Our most meaningful experiences however came when we ventured into the East Los Angeles community and befriended the people we had come to serve. As we drove away from Los Angeles, we realized that by sharing their experiences with us. they had given us something more precious than anything we set out to give them. 14 immersions 16 Campus Ministry Below: “we are a pilgrim people. At this assembly, we learned the motto of Jesuit education: to be men and women for others. The sixty-plus members of the S.I. Service Club is proof that this motto did not go in one ear and out the other on that nerve-racking first day of high school. This club docs exactly what is indicated by its name - we serve others in the S.I. community to the best of our ability. Our service can be found throughout the year; we welcome the freshmen at their registration and scree the seniors at their commencement, along with dozens of other events in between. But the Service Club is more than just an extracurricular club in which a student can be involved in; the students walking around in their handsome blue blazers with a red Service Club patch truly want to serve their school. • Vicki Terheydcn President: Vicky Tcrhcyden: Vice-President: Alison Gilmore: Seniors: Catherine Avcndano. We have stressed service to others and built community among ourselves. During this past year, the Christian Life Community has participated in many events that have helped others: the Food and Toy Drive, Central American Hurricane Relief, Caroling at St. Anne s Retirement Home, making birthday cards for the school commu- nity, and many other activities. CLC meetings consist of discussion, sharing, and prayer each week. With each of these activities, each CLC has worked together to serve others and deepen their own relationship with Jesus Christ. The athletes of Saint Ignatius have a choice of twenty-six different sports. Through our wins and losses, we better our sportsmanship, and our skills on the courts, fields, and in the pool. We, the athletes, have been fortu- nate enough to be a part of these sports. SI has given us many opportunities to better our futures. The athletics are part of our culture and often help us manage our time better. Many students agree that their grades are better when they're involved in athletics. The sports help a young mind open to many possibilities. Whether we carry it on throughout college and or as a professional ca- reer. SI has given us the opportunity to participate in many varying activities and test out what sports we may thrive in. SI thrives on the sports and we owe much gratitude to the many talented athletes that share their abilities with our school. We have performed well over the past year. We arc lucky to have such good facilities to play in. We have 2 basketball gyms, an Olympic size swimming pool. 2 fields, one with a track, tennis courts and many other great facilities. SI is mainly made up of their sports program. Sports play a major part in an athlcte studcnt s life. Thanks to all the athletes who partici- pate. One athlete says, “It’s very competitive and we work really hard, this is proven by our great sports records.” Most of the teams are in the top divisions. This shows the hard work and dedication that all members put into the sports pro- gram. Being an athlete, takes much determination and strength. The coaches push us the maximum and it makes us better people. With pushing ourselves we must work to the extremes in practice and during competitions. SI athletics makes participate better people mentally and physically, through the hard work one must achieve. Led by captains An- thony Devora, Corey Fitzgibbons, and Tripp Jones, the '98 Football Cats gave their all. This leader- ship. along with a combina- tion of strength, talent, and that wildcat spirit led to an incredible season for the cats. Towards the beginning of the season, they thrilled the student body with a 14- 0 win over SI 1C to secure the first leg of the Bruce Mahoney Trophy. The WCAL title came down to a final, intense game between S.I. and St. Francis at St. Francis. The Cats played tough, but the Lancers pre- vailed. The prestige of being 2 in the difficult WCAL still belonged to the Cats, though, and they went on to represent S.I. in the CCs. Overall, it was a wonderful season for the 1998 S.I. We went 4-6 this year, but we were better than our record indicated. There was a time this year where we lost two games by a com- bined total of three points, against Mitty and Riordan. Our team flourished with talented players ranging from great linemen to great backs. The team chemistry. however, was what separated this team from others. Our team was close. This year came with a lot of memories, going all the way back to last Spring. Of the ways that we have matured throughout this year, we thank all of it to our coaches. Without our coaches, we were nothing. Our coaches taught us to play football, but more im- portantly, they taught us dis- cipline and good manners. They are more than coaches, they are people whom ev- eryone on the team re- spected greatly. With wins over Marin Catholic, San Lorenzo Valley. Sacred Heart, and Junipero Serra, we proved that we could play. With hard work and de- termination, the ’99 Varsity Cats will pick up where this years Varsity Cats left olT. JV Football 75 Freshman Football If anyone had told us in Sep- tember what our lives would be like now in November. I doubt a single person would have paid any attention. We have made friend- ships that will last far beyond our four years here. We were also pio- neers of the class of'02. meaning we were one of the first groups in our class to play a sport at SI. Football has brought us to- gether like nothing else could. A feeling of comradeship is shared by all of us who wore the red and blue this fall. This is not to say that we are the first to ever bond through a sport, or gain a sense of equality w ith and respect for one another. This is just to say that we were lucky enough to take our place in the long line of teams that went before us. Just like those previous groups of athletes, we have our story. Here is some of it. We began tryouts on August 29. As soon as we got our hands on our equipment we knew we were in for something great. When else do you get the legal opportunity to knock the pants off somebody? Hut as we all know now, football goes beyond hitting. It is a game of quickness and strength, knowl- edge and will. It is a game that should become a way of life. Of course on August 29. we weren't thinking about all that. The final team list was posted on the fourth of September. Now that the team was set. we could begin our season. Our first pre- season game was against San Lorenzo Valley. Although we lost, we could see that things were coming together, that we were be- coming a team. The rest of our games went along as scheduled. The home games united much of the freshmen class and our faith- ful fans cheered us on with the same enthusiasm with which we played. As with any first year team there were quirks to be worked out. but we worked hard and ev- ery week progressed a little bit more. We learned from our mis- takes and matured as a team. As our season comes to a close this November, we can look for- ward to the rest of our school days with a feeling of accomplishment and pride in what we have done, and confidence in what is to come. Thank you to SI for this oppor- tunity. and thank you to the stu- dent body for supporting us through our first season of Saint Ignatius football. by Sal Rizzo and Kcrgcr Trucsdell Kerger Trucsdell 76 Freshman Football $ - 6V 70 55 4 =? -p V3 j? 13 4 33 7 S Philip Korn. We competed in a new and challenging league due to our amazing accomplish- ments the previous year. And we proved that we were up to the challenge, charging through our victorious 1998 season nearly undefeated with a record of 9-1 to be- come co-champions of our league. We spent about half of our time in the luxurious S.l. bus, as the majority of the games were played in San Jose. However, this pro- vided us with an opportunity to bond in the hours on the bus, which was one of the factors in our highly unified and successful team. Cap- tains Katie Dillon and Laura Remain also worked hard at unifying the team, as well as leading the team into suc- cess, as the Cats made it all the way to the second round of CCS playoffs. We laughed and we ran. Sometimes it got hard but we stuck with it. With the great coaches. Coach Grady, and the new member of our team. Coach Glosser, this years was a suc- cess. The top runners made it to Fresno, which were the finals. We did well with our team captains Dominic Comelli, Mario Tomoschich, and Neil McDonaugh leading us to the finals. A lot of people won medals at one race or another sometimes you were even lucky enough to win a used T-shirt, if you were a dedicated runner. The wonderful morning practices with Coach Glosser were a great way to wake a runner up. The ski jumps were the best part. 1 don’t think a day went by without us having to run around the polo fields. The Polo Fields was our home course. Lands End was also one of my favorites. No one can forget Strawberry Hill, though. It was good if you could drive there and not get caught. These exercises helped us stay strong and growing. The Cow Chip Classic was a great success. The coaches got to throw cow chips and see which one got further. We almost won the furthest throw. I have to say that John McDougal was one of the best runners although he never really showed up for practices. It was to bad that he got kicked him off the team. Seniors Dan Ashley, Tom Blake, Daniel Figoni, Albert Lee, Mike Mahoney, Brendan Raven, Joe Sheehy, and Karl Tellcen led the team to a strong showing in tourna- ment play and in the W.C.A.L., arguably the toughest water polo league in California. Season high- lights included a second place finish at the Valley Christian tournament after a strong game to defeat the Pirates of Robert Louis Stevenson, Varsity vs. JV combat on our annual paintball trip, the best “candy day” ever, watching movies on the charter bus, and Joe Sheehys passionate performance at the Aragon tournament. In this sense, we worked together not only on the court but off the court and around school as well. This experience taught us that not one per- son makes up a team and that it is necessary for coop- eration and dedication from every player. Playing teams that beat us taught us that we cannot go through life al- ways coming out on top, a lesson everyone must learn at a point in their life. These losses, though they were in- deed a set-back, proved to be positive learning experience and we all benefitted from these instances. Another highlight was our victory over SHC and finishing in first at the conclusion of league play. None of these accomplishments could have been achieved without the many hours of hard work and practice put in day in and day out by the players and the coaches. Girls Volleyball The JV girls’ '98 volley- ball season started in August as thirteen anxious girls dedi- cated their next three months to creating a team. We were motivated by our coaches. Coach Harris and Coach Halloran, as they pushed us to be the team we are. We managed to get through the endless drills and long prac- tices with the help of each other. We formed a tight bond as we shared stories, laughed, and cheered together. Our season had a lot in store for us, as we won the majority of our preseason games. We even took first place in our first tournament of the year, the Milipitas tournament, which included a victory over SHC. Then the season rolled along as we dominated every team we met, with the excep- tion of the one team able to defeat us, SHC. We finished an amazing second place in CiPSL. As a team we gave each game 110%, pouring our hearts into them. None of us ended the season with a loss; we all have our friend- ships and this makes each of us a winner. Usually the even numbered rowers are called the ports and the odd numbered rowers are called the starburts. Rowing in- volves the whole body, mind and soul. On the water, one can express themselves, to be a part of the team and to be ones self. One rows to some how try to squeeze the last drop out of life. One rowing for dedication and love will make them smile. Each stroke has to be taken as if it were your last stroke. A rower has to fight the water, hoping the rower wins the dominance. The mind must win the com- petition between the water and the rower. At full stroke a rower must be at their full reach, hoping to grasp as much water as possible. A whole boat must be at full stroke together. The arms are fully stretched out, while the back is bent over still keep- ing your head up. The legs are bent, while you sit on a slid- ing seat. A rower must pull back on the oar making the boat move swiftly. Out on the water one might hear moans or groans when a rower pulls back against the water during their stroke. It takes the whole body when rowing. A stroke must stay straight and paral- lel as to keep the boat steady. A usual course is about two thousand meters. Every stroke must have a lot of gusto and strength behind it. In a re- gatta, a boat usually races against 5-10 other boats and your wishes should be to come in first across the fin- ish line. To be a rower takes a lot of time, effort, and coop- eration. By Peter Clifford Rowing is putting your guts behind an oar and pull- ing your life out of it. It is giv- ing it your all when there is nothing left to give. To me. rowing means to set a goal and keep striving for this goal making failure impossible. To row, one must be powerful with a strong heart; a heart such as gold. One has to be dedicated and ready to give themselves for their rowing mates. It takes tons of time and talent to be a good rower. One must share a deep love for rowing with their team. A usual boat consists of 9 people; bow, 2 man, 3 man. 4 man. 5 man, 6 man, 7 man, stroke and the coxswain. They must work together to make the boat move swiftly. The bow and 2 man are used to maneuver, 3,4,5,6 men are used as the power of the boat. 7 and stroke man are used to Varsity Boy's Crew; Kcvine Allen. David Bcnchncr. Seth Bcrling. Marc Borclla. In 1947, Saint Ignatius College Prep, was contacted by a group from Sacred Heart Cathedral in- terested in commemorating alumni from both schools that fought and lost their lives in World War II. They wanted to make a trophy that symbolized the rivalry between Saint Ignatius and Sacred Heart, which is the longest ongoing rivalry west of the Mississippi. Saint Ignatius chose Bill Bruce as their honorce. Bruce was a S.I. graduate in the class of 1935. Bruce served as Student Body President, was a star football player for the wildcats, was a member of the boxing club, and excelled academically. Bill joined the Navy when the war started, and was killed in an airplane crash at the Naval Air Station in Pasco, Washington on April 14, 1943. Sacred Heart Cathedral chose Jerry Mahoney as their hon- oree. Mahoney was a graduate in the class of 1944. Mahoney excelled in football and basketball, winning the All-City honors for both sports dur- ing his senior year. Mahoney died while aboard the S.S. Denny B. Plant, which was sunk by a German submarine. The rivalry the Brucc-Mahoncy trophy represents existed long before the origin of the trophy. This rivalry, which today greatly contributes to the excite- ment of being a wildcat, began all the way back in 1893. On St. Patrick’s Day of this year, the two schools met at Eighth and Market streets to compete in a rugby game, which Sacred Heart won 14-4. Since that day, S.I. and S.H. have com- peted in innumerable athletic events. Since the origin of the Brucc- Mahoney trophy, football, basket- ball, and baseball have been the ath- letic events most eagerly anticipated by the student bodies of each school. The winner of two out of three of these games gains control of the Tro- phy. In recent years, gaining control of the trophy has meant having it kept in a display case at the winning school for the following year. And for the next year, the trophy will rightfully rest in the hallways of St. Ignatius. After the tragic loss of the trophy last year, the athletes, backed by the cheerleaders and the whole student body, set out on a mission to regain control of this cherished prize. The exceptional football Cats this year began the success of the mission with their 14- 0 win over S.H. at Kezar stadium October 2,1998. Then, the dynamic basketball team defeated S.H. 60-39 at U.S.F. on January 20, 1999, thus regaining possession of the trophy. This victory was one of many for this year’s basketball team, who went on to be undefeated champions of the WCAL and compete at higher levels, includ- ing CCS. Baseball has not yet been played, but this year the result of that game will not be a factor in the decid- ing of the Bruce-Mahoney trophy...S.I. has the Bruce!!! 152 The Brucc-Mahoney trophy Basketball: S.I. 60 S.H. 39 154 Brucc-Mahoney basketball Baseball.....? This year has been a year to try and fit-in. We have all been trying to find our spots in this school and where we belong. We have meet many of new friends and taken part in many new activities. As we look forward to next year, as the rulers of the 4th period lunch, we hope to express and share more of talents and good quali- ties. This year has brought us together from many different schools and backgrounds. We were all scared on our first day of school and didn’t know what to do, some of us still don't but we were are able to manage. Thank God for our senior buddies who helped us find our ways, even though most of them didn’t know their way either. The transition was hard for most of us to come from such small grammer school to a place with over fourteen hundred students. We have come together as a family united in the Ignatius Spirit. We have learned from all the upperclassman about SI. SI continues to shape who we are and I am proud to be an Ignatian. Go Cats!!!!!! Twins always knows how to get the girls. 16S Freshman opening Freshmen opening 169 Christine A halos Abraham A barca Cesar Abdul Masxili Michael Abou Jaoude Jane Acap Alexis Adler Matthew Albcrtolle Zinnia Amoycn Chiara Angelicola Gina Antonini Marisa Annanino Alexander Arroyo Singer Brittany Austin Mario A zolino Laura Batch Christopher Balestricri Danielle Banks Robert Barbi Zachary Batu Itch Maria Bassi Teresa Behr Lorenzo Benediety Parker Berling Alcssandra Billantc Christina Biorulini Ryan Bjorkquist Justin Boland 170 Freshmen Casey Bui lier Keina Bosque Joseph Boswell Megan Boudewyn Timothy Breen Kathleen Brooks Jessica Brown Aaron Bush Alexander Button Gina Cadci Loren Cadclinia Maria Calvo Y. role as sophomores to be more than just ruling fourth period lunch. Though the worries of fitting into the bottom of the totem pole are no longer a big concern, we have yet to experience the stresses of college applications and SAT’s. We con- tribute a lot more than people may perceive. We arc the upperclass of the underclassmen. This gives us a glimpse of what it means to be true leaders of this school. Some of us may not be starting Varsity players, hold high posi- tions on Student Council, or work as editors of the yearbook and newspaper. Although our contributions to these areas of student life seem miniscule, they have an obvious effect on not only our class but the whole school as well. Wc arc sophomores preparing for the unknown...preparing for the future...growing as a class will reveal the potential we have to offer in the years that await. -Nicole DeMartini, Erin O'Brien, Ann Marie Hamilton, Kerry Porto I 184 Sophomore Opening Sophomore Opening 185 Stella Abati Ailccn Abaya Cesar Abella Christopher Achacoso Ahema Adarkwa Alexandrina Agloro Marissa Alexia Brian Allen John Angcay Robert Angcay Georgina Anton Charles Appah Rebecca Armenia David Amott Katharine Ashley Patrice Asuncion Shiegla Averi 11 Amantia Ayoob Gina Balibrera Christopher Bauman Gino Bcnedciti Anne Marie Benson Andrew Benton Erik Berg Sarah Berrin Christopher Bcstwick Elsa Beyer Jesse Biroscak Danielle Bisho Stephen Blake Andres Bogatsky Daniel Boland Maria Bondoc Kevin Borella Ben Brail ford Charles Bradley Alexander Bravlield Ryan Brittain Maura Brosnan Erica Brown Ian Browning Brianna Budiselieh Peter Bume Kvan Bums l.eslicann Cachola 186 Sophomores Danielle Callaghan Patrick Callaghan Dennis Callcjas Evan Campbell John Canton John Cappicllo Catherine Caulfield Megan Cavalier Joshua Chang Monica Charlton Brian Chase Elaine Chen Alan Chem Jason Chin Christopher Ching Lauren Christopher Alexander Chu Julian Chung Krystlc Clarke Patrick Clifford Daniel Colby Matthew Conti Lindsay Cope Aimee Corsiglia Brian Cotter Meghan Cren en Colo in Cronin Kevin Cronin Sophomores 187 Ryan Crowley Kairina Cm Charlotte Cunningham Jessica Curiale Jacob Culler Susan Damon Paul Dana Jennifer Darden Dirk Daza Nicholas Dc Barbric Jade IX Guzman Fernando IX I-a Pena Jessica IX l.a Rosa Briannc IX Larama Nicole IX Martini Robert IX Vere Hum Briannc IXIa Rama Raymond IXIara Travis Denning Kathleen Dcvitt Jacinta Dia Dc Rivera Joycclyn Diaz Brian Dillon Dinah Diinalania Dominic DiSanii Demarie Di on Christine Dominguez Michael Dominguez 188 Sophomores Katherine Donaldson Kevin Donohoe Katie Dull Anthony Ea Alexander Elmquist Ahren Engelhard! The mind body and spirit are involved in S.l. We arc well-rounded individuals because of our Jesuit education. As Ignatians we are encouraged to be involved in extra circular activities. Weather it is a service club, academic club, athletics club, art club or an ethnic club, and they arc based on unity. Organizations unify our school, and help us get in tune with our mind, body adn spirit. We have built a strong community in our sports, clubs and most of all our organizations. The spirit that surrounds S.l. keeps our organi- zations alive. Most of the students have been involved in an organization here at S.l. We are encouraged to do and join as many as possible. Organizations arc a huge part of the St. Ignatius community. We learn about one another, and about ourselves. The involvement of different clubs and organizations in our school, is impor- tant in teaching us how to communicate together. The myriad of organizations we have at S.l. makes our student body diverse. Through organizations, we are given the ability to make use of our many talents. Our organizations hel make us better people for ourselves and most of all for others. We can help others in our community through our service. We also can serve our school. We have so many good facilities here at S.l. that one can start one’s own club. In fact, most of the organizations here at S.l. have been started by the students. To start an organization one would need some stu- dents and a moderator, then the school will then support you in your club. The school’s support is neccessary in the organizations. Most of them are supported with money from the magazine drive. The money is divided among the organizations. A big thank you goes out to the school for all their help and support in making the organization program at S.l. as wonderful as it is. The organization keeps the S.l. spirit alive. Through the wonderful senior retreat pro- gram, the fabulous Student Council which led the class in service and spirit, and the multitude of talents of each member of this un- forgettable class, the class showed its true colors as a unique, giving group of individuals. The se- nior class is of course the best class in the school and it showed through everything that they did. They were the example-setters of the school, and much admired by the entire student body. They shared their love for the school with everyone, in- cluding the, ahem, freshmen. They lived up to the expectations of being the last graduating class of the millennium, and no time soon shall they be forgotten. They car- ried the school and built a community within the school which will remain in the rest of the student body next year, paving the way for the century to come. As well, within their class they built a tight- knit community of not only classmates but friends. Their names, voices, and hearts will always ring through the halls of S.l. forever.
