Renowned for his dexterity with the spoken word, Joe participated in the Freshman Elo- cution Contest and the Gold Medal Debate, placed second in the Sophomore Oratorical Contest, and first in the Shakespeare Contest. ... In his fourth year of football, Joe quarter- barked the championship varsity, and his sensational punting pulled the team out of many a bad spot.
