It is better to fight diligently to live, rather than to lie down bravely to die. To be honest in my conviction, let me say ot the very outset, that first and fore- most, my principal desire is to win games. Secondly, it is my hope, through guid- ance, and example, to exercise a whole- some influence over the men under me, and to inspire them to seek and attain high obiectives in a well rounded and balanced life. Most of us need slogans, designs, pat- terns, and philosophies to cling to when the going is rough and it seems that life is more or less futile. A desire to win, to play on a team, submerging the personal self for the benefit of the group, to attain perfection, and to put their powers and abilities to the utmost will turn a merely mediocre team into a team of poise, judgment, determination, and champion- ship.
