l IM STUDENT THEATER XXIII!!! Billy, the personification of absolute good, is thrown into conflict with the sadistic Clag- gert, the figure of evil, in the very opening moments of the play. We follow the tragedy of this eternal conflict until it results in the destruction of Claggert at the hands of Billy. The tragedy then reaches its fullest fatalistic moment in the execution of Billy as the play itself closes. The story of Billy Budd is essentially a morality play with an unpopular moral-that absolute good and absolute evil must destroy each other. Thus it would seem that Melville's view of life is awakening an appreciation of the contemporary conflict as lived today. PROGRAM NOTES The story of Billy Budd deals with life aboard a British Warship in l798 in all its fullness of color and pagentry-the squal- lid life of the crew below deck, the austerity of discipline, the feuds between men and officers, the explosions of anger and treach- ery, and the ever present shadow of death. DEBATE AND FORENSICS TEAMS Known for their eternal verbosity, the debate and forensics teams are recognized throughout the Pacific Coast League as the post office men because of their special deliveries, dealing in debate this year with tariff and trade policies for the Western Hemisphere and in forensics with many current topics and abstract ideas. These two growing organizations, under the super- vision of Mr. Mqrtin Larrey, have made a science out of argumentation and a fine art out of oration. In the be- ginning of the course of developing these skills, the P.O. men have become familiar with many subiects of uni- versal controversy and interest. As Buddha preached, Right view, right aim, right speech, right action . . . is the proper sequence of the constituent parts of human improvement.
