HALL OF FAME HONOR STUDENT Once in a while there passes through a high school a student that may be described simply as “Brilliant' . It is our School's good fortune to have such a student in this year's graduating class. When he first came to us four years ago, it was not difficult to detect that here among us was a boy that had every- thing that goes to mgke a scholar. He was possessed of a keen mind and an aptitude for study that has not been surpassed in the short academic history of Saint Francis. His scholastic record is an exceptional one. He is a straight A student all through his four years in high school. This record, impressive in its own right, he capped by winning a Cup for Science and Mathematics in the Bank of America Achievement Awards Contest, and, as a result, is eligible for a Scholarship. In addition, he was top student in the school in the California Scholarship Federation requirements, and his fellow CSF members in the Saint Francis Chapter voted him the honor of being that Chapter's first President. It may be a trite saying to describe a per- son a both a gentleman and a scholar but this particular student is the essence of both. This year's A1.VERNIAN is both honored and proud to salute the HONOR STUDENT of the 1954 Graduating Class, WALTER A. SCHAAL. SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR There are no Four Horsemen , and there are no Seven Blocks of Granite at Saint Francis, so we make no claim to athletic fame on the basis of immor- tality. Rather, do we point with pride to young' men who consistently play the game well and who are motivated by the highest and keenest sense of sports- manship. A look back through the Year Books of the past few years will tell the story that it is such men we honor each year. This year is no exception. We are honoring an athlete this year that can best be described as a steady player . This epithet connotes not brilliance, but application; not temperament, but con- sistency. And it was not just one phase of Athletics, but all phases,- not just one game, but all games. He is only a two year player, but in that short time he stacked up an enviable record. In the 1952-1953 Season, he played Football, Basketball, and Base- ball, being voted by the School's Ath- letic Director and Coaches as the School's most valuable player in Baseball. In the 1953-1954 Season, he played Football and Basketball. To help his school in the latter, he gave up his job. That was a sacrifice, but it was rewarded when he received Honorable Mention in the All- Conference Grid Team. His teammates accorded him the honor of being the Team Captain. We think that it is a fitting close to his athletic career at Saint Francis that the Athletic Director and his Coaches should choose him as the Sportsman of the Year. And it is as such that the 1954 ALVERIAN salutes the steady and con- sistent player of the year—PAT DOWNS.

From the Statue of Liberty to the Florida Keys, Bitler and Linkogle will sail with the breeze. Hand, a biologist, will study his pests. And scare all his friends, neighbors, and guests. Ryan with T” shirt and whistle we ll see iHead coach in athletics at a big university. In later life, it's Ferry you'll meet, A solid'' citizen selling concrete. And most likely on television you’ll hear his McMann in Washington will show no pity As head of the Senate Investigating Comm Hosford, the mechanic, will work out the sc For General Motors at five hundred a week. Me Donough with needle, scalpel, and sword Will stroll down the hall to the Surgical Ward McArthur is to be a professional scout. We know he'll be good without a doubt. Burris at the races will be a nervous wreck Urging the horses in the home stretch. This is the end; there is no more. This is our final tribute. Why Shore !! The Class of '54 XX»XX{
