HONOR STUDENT We hove never known him to be other than an exceptional student, possessed of a keen insight into knowledge and o deep interest into learning. He was that type of student too, that he was never without a smile and never without a joke, as though the learning experience was fun to him. In him, we would say knowledge and humor, learning and courtesy, studies and respect met and blended, to produce a gentleman who was every inch a scholar, ond a scholar who was every inch a gentleman — our Honor Student of 1952, Laurence Rolle. SPORTSMAN The nice things about him are as numerous os the freckles on his smiling face. We will always re- member him as eager, anxious, affable, courteous and respectful. We will remember him too as one who seemed to make a habit of being brilliant at sports. What he did on the gridiron and the hard- wood looked to us like something that just came natural to him. His case and prowess were things to be envied, emulated. It was for all these things, and many more besides, that his coaches praised him, his colleagues idolized him, and his teachers admired him — and it is for all of these things that we add our measure of praise, and salute our Sportsman of the Year, Bob Kelly.

jass You are all familiar with the school crest as it appears on the Senior class ring and on the cover of this book, but how many of you know what it means? If you examine it closely, you will $ee that it depicts a cross surrounded by rays of light, and in the foreground, two arms outstretched and crossed, one over the other. One of the arms is bare, while the other is clothed in the Franciscan brown, and the palm of each hand is pierced. Underneath the whole design is a scroll with the Franciscan motto: “Deus Meus et Omnia,” which means: “My God and My All! If we are to understand the significance of the two arms, we must recall that St. Francis received the marks of the Passion, the Stigmata, and that he car- ried them for the last two years of his life. His hands, feet, and side were pierced like those of his Divine Master in token of his likeness to Him. And so the bare arm in the school crest is the arm of Christ, and the one clothed in brown is the arm of St. Francis. The cross in the background has no figure on it because Our Lord, Who actually hung on it, and St. Francis, who was wounded with the marks of the Crucifixion, are both represented by the arms outstretched in front of the cross. The motto: “My God and My All! was a favorite prayer of St. Frarxcis, and he often used to spend the whole night repeating it over and over again. The school crest and motto, which are in reality the Franciscan coat-of-arms, point out to us the way we should live—imitating Christ, Our Lord, and desiring nothing but God and whatever leads us to Him.
