f SL is lib Q adsl DG 0 FKRHSHLIHH Message from Pastor to Graduation Class of '30 MEM D! EMBERS of the Graduation Class of '30, you are leaving St. Francis de ASW' Sales School. The majority of you have been with us from the first Q .,A, ,,., Q W years of your school life. Tn so far as a school shapes and develops character, our school and our work must be judged by your Worth. This thought, alone, would make us intensely interested in your future. Add to this the personal love that has been back of our work and will be back of our continued interest in you and you can understand the anxious but hopeful solicitude with which we see you assume new responsibilities. Your school motto, two lines penned for the first issue of your school paper, is: ' Go forth, and let your message bc The beauty of the Deity. And now you go forth with the power to carry that message to your world more efficiently than could any printed page. The beauty of the Deity means the beauty of love, for God is love, it means the beauty of Truth for God is Truth, the beauty of Virtue for God is Virtue. From the beginning we have striven to show you that we were more deeply interested in the character you develop than in the knowledge that you ac- quired. ln season and out of season we have urged you to do earnest work, for without honest Work there can be no growth or development of- character. Idle- ness stagnates, service builds. God is the Master-man and His human child should reHect and image its divine Father. We are brought forth to express in finite being the perfections of Eternal Being. In a finite way the parent expresses the paternal love of God, the true express His truth, the just express His justice, the pure express His purity. Just in the measure that We do express these virtues We are worthy to be called Sons of God. Just in the measure that we express in our life the beauties of the Divine Life we are fulfilling the purpose of our creation and of our redemption. God became man that men might become gods. In our finite, halting and imperfect. way we can and should show forth the beauties of the Deity. No ideal should be too high for you. If the Catholic school based the purpose and the methods of its work on materialistic psychology then we would have trained you to think of yourselves as brothers of the animal. A peda.g'og'y based on materialistic psychology must Page524 y aww 1930

Flllllwllllllll train those whose thought and character it forms to class themselves as animals in nature and in destiny. lf we ha.d thus trained you we could ask of you nothing high or holy. We do not ask morality of the animal, we do not ask gentleness of the tiger. But we have based the purpose and the methods of our education on the concept of an immortal soul, distinct from the reactions of matter. We have trained you to esteem yourselves as children of God and brothers of Christ. We can, therefore, ask of you Christlike virtue. We can ask you to look upward and to struggle upward, to claim and seek your kinship with the Divine. In school we asked you to use and develop to the utmost those talents that God had given you, and now we ask you to live on a high plane of life, on the Christian plane of life. Christianity is a height to which men have climbed slowly and any descent from that height is a form of suicide. You will and must live in the worldg but take into that world your faith, your concept of duty, your habits of prayer, your fidelity to church and for you that world will never be a Godless World. Go forth and let the message of your thought, your conversation, your lives be the beauty of Love, Justice, Truth and Temperance.
