WJ Tw Gi , . .iv ' R jde Jzfaniord We, the juniors, have found that the claims we staked 05 as sophomores had some very rich veins of gold in them. If you don't believe us, check over the records. Our boys have been on all the teams-football, basketball, track, and baseball, our girls have been in on all the GAA. events of the year, and we've all been active in the clubs and school affairs. Besides that we struck pay-dirt in our class play-we learned to co-operate, to be actors, to manage stage business and finances, and then we put on our best manners and entertained the Forty-niners at a big party-the Prom-at the Marie- mont Inn on May 7. STUDENT UUUNUIL The Student Council is an organization of representatives from grades seven through twelve, the upper classes having the larger representation. Locally, Student Council helps to malce student life more enjoyable by sponsoring the canteens after every Friday night home basketball game. With the proceeds from these canteens, the Council is buying the arc movie projector used in the auditorium. The annual post-Easter movie treat is the direct thank-you to the student body for its support of the canteen. Nationally, our Council is helping plan the national convention of the National Association of Student Council, which will be held in Cincinnati in June 1949. Our representatives are securing the favors and souvenirs for the three hundred dele- gates, who are expected to attend. All this national participation would not be possible if it were not for our sponsor, Miss Olga Stuerwald, who is a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which supervises the student councils. HUNUH SUUIETIES St. Bernard High School boasts two chapters of the national honor societies--a chapter of the Senior National Honor Society, and one of the junior National Honor Society. Members in the chapter are outstanding not only in scholarship brit also in the qualities of character, leadership, and service. Scholarship basis for membership in the Senior National Honor Society is maintenance of an average of 90 throughout the student's high sehool eareer, with at least one year of attendance at St. Bernard High School. Election may be made at the end of the lirst semester in the junior year or at the end of any semester after that. Election to membership in the Junior National Honor Society may be made after completion of the first semester in the eighth grade or during the ninth grade. The scholarship requirement is ranking in the upper ten per cent of the class. A very impressive assembly program was held this year in February. At that time new members were tapped for mem! hership by the old members, and each new member was capped with the mortar board cap-the symbol of learning. junior Chapter Senior Chapter Mmtoiig Grmvras , .,,, President . , ,, .. ............. Since the Y-Teens are a part of the Y.W.C.A., our girls participate in the city- wide projects. This year one of our members, Marianne Ringwald, has been city chairman of the ring work, and we are glad to report that there are several mem- bers of our club who have earned their Y-Teen rings this year. In local activities the club has had a well-planned program-seasonal parties, a beautiful candle-light initiation, a very fine Mother-Daughter dinner with Mrs. Margaret von Selle as speaker, joint meetings with the Hi-Y, and a dance to raise funds for world reconstruction work of the Y. Spring brings with it two of the traditional projects-a picnic with the Hi-Y Club and the Honor Banquet, which is planned and financed by our club. The members of the Senior Class going out into the adult world will, we feel confident, continue in leadership whether in college or community. The Senior Girls' Athletic Association is composed of the high school girls and meets after school each Friday of the school year. Since the purpose of G.A.A. is to provide maximum participation in sports for the girls of the school, intramural games follow the seasons. In the fall, volleyball competition ended with LaRie Hawkins' team as victor. Basketball honors were won by Jeanne Schumacker's team, but in the girls' intramural basketball tournament the Shooting Stars, captained by Margie Bockelman, became the 1949 champs. Baseball is still to come, but we would like to record that the winner of the 1948 baseball season was Shirley ,Iackson's team. Membership in G.A.A. has increased this year, with the result that we have had greater participation in all sports. We feel that we have done much to further our purposes-to learn to live and work with others and to accept defeat with the same grace with which we accept victory. . When the weather finally became warm enough last spring for outdoor run- ning, many of the boys were seen daily warming up around the track. Our team was made up largely of sprinters, with very few distance men or participants in field events. Mr. Yinger, the new track coach, did a fine job of molding a team from the material he had. We entered many meets, such as the Lockland Night Relays, the M.V.l.L. Annual Meet, the Creenhills, the Withrow, and the Plainville Meets. Although we never actually came in first at any of these meets, we placed well in every one. One of our boys, Paul Ceisen, entered the State Meet, where he came in third in the 100 yard dash and second in the 220 yard dash. Here's wishing Coach Yinger and the track team success in 1949. GULF 1948 St. Bernard's greens men, Captain Aubrey Eaton, Bill Boesken, Jerry Waites, and -lack Gehring, finished up a good season by winning two, losing one match, and tying two matches. In spite of poor weather and little opportunity to practice, our team represented St. Bernard High very well all the way.
