Next, we were known as that large Sophomore Class. The combination of Elmwood students and St. Bernard students made quite the team, for they mixed very well. This year we are being paged as the future Seniors of St. Bernard. We surprised the Honor Society by having a large percentage of the class inducted into that organization. Now we are looking forward to being Seniors. But we are not happy at thought of leaving St. Bernard High, for we have grown to like school in spite of eight o'clock sessions and the grind of lessons. The cool September breeze brushed across the faces of students in all parts of the country as they started back to school. We, the Sophomores of St. Bernard, were not excepted from this throng. We, too, looked for- ward to a new school year, new activities, and new friends. This school year brought us the title of Sophomore-one more move toward the goal, graduation from St. Bernard High. Our activities were numerous, we participated in the school clubs and functions, we, our- selves, giving a very successful dance. The new friends came for the most part, when the students from Elmwood Place and St. Bernard became classmates. It has been a wonderful year, and we hope that our next two years at St. Bernard High will be as successful. Then we entered into the activities of the school, some of the boys joining the Junior Hi-Y, and the girls, the G. A. A. and the Junior Girl Reserves. We are proud of our boys who made the Junior High basketball team. They did well in those Saturday morning games. We are also proud of our class in the support of the War Stamp and Bond sales. We shall no longer be the lowly seventh graders, but the seniors, to whom the rest of the school looks up. Just what's the cause of the light shining out of the windows at St. Bernard High School almost every Thursday night? Oh, that's nothing un- usual. It's just the regular meeting of the Hi-Y club. This year the Hi-Y has grown considerably. Many St. Bernard and Elmwood boys joined the club and were fondly greeted by the old members at the mid-year initia- tion. This year has also brought many important changes in the Hi-Y ac- tivities. For the first time the gym has been used on program nights, a new Hi-Y room in the gym building has been painted, and an honor plaque, dedicated to the Hi-Y boys in the service, has been placed in the hall of the high school building. The seniors who leave the club this year have a few pointers to give the juniors and sophomores. Enright This year, for the first time in the history of St. Bernard High School, a Varsity B Club was organized. The membership of the club consists of those boys who, through athletic achievement, have earned Varsity letters. The activities of the club were somewhat limited, and we did not enjoy too great a success. However, we did serve as the central organ for several projects to raise money for the athletic fund, and despite our limited activity, we do not think that we have wasted the year. In carrying out our club purpose-To encourage the playing of athletics and to stress the importance of physical fitness in the school and commu- nity-we have been quite successful, due, in part, to the aid of our junior branch, the B. We had an all game record of 18 wins and 4 losses, and went undefeated in 12 games in the M. V. I. L. circuit four of our victories last minute or overtime thrillers Then because of our excellent season's record we went to the District Tournament at Xavier Fieldhouse as one of the favored quintetsg however after eliminating Oxford McGufTey and Deer Park, we were defeated by a tough Lockland five in a quarter-final contest We realize, that though our record was very impressive, we did not accomplish all that we should have. Therefore, in closing, I feel that it is no more than my duty to ask next year's team to profit by our unnecessary mistakes. James Bowe 44 ld Page Forty-seven R E E R V E Loft to fight, FIRST ROXV-F. After a month or so of practice, the Reserve Team was picked, and we traveled to Plainville, only to be defeated. However, as the season went into full swing, we proved our metal, with the result that Roger Bacon Reserve Team was the only other one to defeat us. In the last game of the season, we defeated Wyom- ing Reserves, thus winning the Millcreek Valley crown. With sixteen wins against two defeats, we had a successful season. Here's hoping next year's team meets with as much success. Since St. Bernard became a member of the Millcreek Valley Inter- scholastic League in 1943, we participated in the M.V.I.L. track meet in- stead of the Hamilton County meet, as we had in former years. Even with weather conditions against us during the training season, we managed to make a creditable showing in the meet, the elementary junior and senior groups taking second places, the high school junior group placing third, and the high school senior group, sixth. NOTE: Since it is necessary to prepare this Annual earlier this year. the pictures and records of the baseball and track teams are those of IQ43. If your memory is good, you will remember that the 1943 baseball season was more suited to swimming.
