Many new ideas and innovations were affected by editor-in-chief Dave Blanchfield. The pictures of the class of '69 were designed and arranged by senior editor Dominic Vitrano. The junior, sopho- more, and freshman sections were compiled by underclass editor .lim Wilkins. Dances, clubs, and the numerous aspects of campus life were organized by activities editor Tim Dunn. Simon Mayeski, sports editor, was responsible for the many athletic activities included in this annual. The photo- graphs in The Sainlsman were under the watchful eye of Karl Eklund, photography editor. Mod- erator for the yearbook was Fr. Gary Rye and assistants were Dennis Bergevin, Jim Fornaca, and Scott McColl. 70 r 'hu ff Photography editor: Karl Eklund Editors: KTOP L lo Rl Si Maycski, Dave Blanchficld, and Domi nic Vitrano. Under the guidance of co-moderators Mr. Michael Greenwald and Fr. Richard Smith, the club showed imagination and dedication. Many free weekends were spent at school in preparation for rallies and athletic games. The pep rallies exhibited marked originality as did the many banners and posters. The skits for the foot- ball rallies provided a consistant show of creative ideas and, for once, humor. One innovation was the participation of a faculty member, Mr. Greenwald. President of the Pep Club was Joe DiBernardo and special recognition must go to Kyle Brooks. 83 LETTERIVI EN 'S CLUB This year's Lettermen's Club was undoubtedly one of the most active in years. Under the leader- ship of president Tony Meierbachtol, vice president Leo Zofrea, secretary Bill Daron, and treasurer Al Ambort, the club sponsored dances, a new Pepsi machine in the coaches' office, and numerous social events with girls' clubs from other schools. Moderator Mr. Joseph DiTomaso enthusiastically encouraged the club to initiate these new ac- tivities and to become a more prominent campus organization. L T0 R: Al Ambort, Bill Daron, Leo Zofrea, Tony Meierbachtol ...-v ' SPIRITUAL An integral part of campus life at Saints is focused on the spiritual development of each Saintsman. He is presented with the opinions of many of the most prominent religious authorities and the moral and ethical teachings of the Church. It is then the duty of the suudent, under the guidance of his teachers, to accept or reject willingly and intelligently the re- ligious and moral outlook on life. On special occasions during the year, masses were cele- brated in the gym. Days of recollection were also held for the students, and a special marriage seminar for seniors was organized at the USD College for Women. 85 V w 9 i A S 0, parm gf 5 4 0 . '63, gg ,X ,yy vw. An innovation for seniors and juniors this year was the introduction of the modular scheduling system. This system, which breaks the school day into 30 minute lectures and 60 to 90 minute small group sessions, allows the students to become acquainted with a college-type atmosphere. The student has more time to discuss subjects in depth and to become active as an individual rather than just as a member of another class. It gives the students an opportunity to help each other and to share ideas and knowledge. It was met with general favor by the students and acknowl- edged as a great success. lO4 Fr, Mahedy holding attention ofseniors in a lecture. Pat makes use of his free mods for independent study. Having started from the small Indian mission of Father .lunipero Ser- ra, it grew, though not without its setbacks, into what is now a modern community. Since its first days under the Spanish lords, San Diego has experienced a history as few cities have known. From Indian massacres, Spanish ranchos, international exhibitions, to a city threatened by foreign invasion, San Diego has known moments of golden prosperity and vir- tual extinction. Through the years, San Diego has learned the value of progressive thought tempered with cautious patience and has nev- er forgotten the heritage and culture left by its founders. Nowhere in these United States can any city boast the beauty, culture, and prog- ress found in this one city of San Diego. MORSE A phenomenal last-minute drive, which saw Mike Ottombrino complete six straight passes and move the team from its 20 to the Morse eight yard line, ended in a blocked field goal as Morse took a one-point victory and the Eastern League playoff spot, I4- I3. Pat Tormey returned an interception 43 yards for a TD. Manard and Bonnell lead thc way for Ccpeda down the line. MADISON Saints crushed Madison on a fog-bound field behind a stiff de- fense which recovered 4 fumbles. UNCOLN Tom Bonnell swept around right end for 28 yards with l:48 left in the game for the only score as Saints defeated Lincoln, 7-0. Saints' defense halted a Lincoln drive on our 40, and the offense marched 60 yards in 8 plays. Lincoln penetrated as close as our IO, but an interception in the endzone by Meierbachtol ended that threat. Ambort, Leto. Manard. and Pacior zero in on opponent, as Cardinal gets wings clipped. 149 HOOVER Tom Bonnell led Saints with three touchdowns, one an 80-yard kick-off return, as we handed a 28-6 defeat to Hoover at our Homecoming on No- vember 8. Couch Vic Pluycr and buck John Ccpcdu discuss . , . the coaching staff In four years as head football coach at Saints, .Ioe DiTomaso has built a dynasty. Following a bleak freshman season, the DiTomaso-coached Saints have taken a second and two firsts in league play. Coach himself played varsity ball here for four years. Coach DiTomaso has earned the respect, devo- tion, and admiration of all he has come into contact with at Saints. His assistant, Vic Player is another former Saints backfield star, and is responsible for our tremendous backlields of the past two years. Although Saints' .IV football team finished the season with a 4-5 record, the team was never out of contention in any game. Their wins came in high-scoring affairs, while the games they did lose usually were very close. The running attack was sparked by Jesse Ochoa and Caesar Renteria, and the blocking resting in the hands of men like Willie Nathan, Willie Gibson, Bob Pruxtman, and Tom Kokinis. The defense, tops in the league, starred Ray Mederis, Curt Young, Monte Jackson, Felix Meza, and Mark Habina, just to name a few. Despite its so-so record, the team did produce a number of skilled athletes who should be able to keep the Saints dynasty going strong for two more years. 155 'WR we wp-K ' , ww' .A X. if ?'fiii- Ax-we QM.
