To justify the faith of its founders, St. Andrews must challenge complacency and mediocrity in all of life. It seeks to combine without apology the love of God and the love of learning, the spiritual and the intellectual, and is committed to the pursuit of excellence in its academic, its social and its religious program. More specifically the objectives of the educa- tional experience provided at St. Andrews are the following: (1) A disciplined, informed and inquiring mind, marked by the ability to think clearly and to express ideas effectively. (2) A breadth of intellectual sympathy that in- cludes awareness of the major cultural achievements of Western civilization and of the emerging non- Western countries. (3) A growing and informed Christian faith that finds expression in genuine commitment to the Church, and in the work to which its graduates are called. (4) An intelligent concern for Christian and democratic values in personal relations, and in na- tional and international affairs. (5) A desire for continued intellectual, moral and spiritual growth. (6) Physical fitness and vitality. Midst nervous smiles, anticipation, and the swirl of peau de soie, Miss Andrea Barton and her court were selected on the basis of appearance, presentation, and intelligence. To these girls go the distinction of being the outstanding con- testants in the competition for Miss Lamp and Shield. Saturday afternoon featured an intramural football game in which the Blue Team defeated the dorm champions of the University of North Carolina. Miss Elaine Tate, the Homecoming Queen, and her court were introduced during the half-time activities. Alumni and students crowded the campus, see- ing old friends and making new ones. The Homecoming dance with Burt Massingale and his Orchestra climaxed the weekend, filling us with many happy memories — memories to linger a lifetime. Six colleges are charter members of this association. These colleges are Charlotte College, College of Charleston, Lynchburg College, Methodist College of Fayetteville, N.C, Wesleyan Col- lege and St. Andrews College. At the organizational meeting, Mr. Rufus Hackney, director of athletics at St. An- drews College, was elected president. Dr. Raymond Bauer, athletic director of athletics at Wesleyan, was named vice president, and Tony Meyers, athletic director of the Col- lege of Charleston, was selected as the secretary-treasurer. The keystone in the constitution of this new athletic conference is that no athlete will be given financial aid not available to other students — in other words, there will be no athletic scholarships. The Dixie Conference has board of directors made up of the presidents of the mem- ber colleges, or a designated representative. Its function is to set policies and establish guidelines. Sports that will receive major emphasis in this new athletic conference include bas- ketball, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, soccer, track and cross country. These sports will become conference sports when four of the members field teams in these sports. Three of the member colleges fielded cross country teams this fall, and Lynchburg College won the first conference cross country championship on November 16, 1964, over the four-mile course at St. Andrews College. St. Andrews and the College of Charles- ton finished second and third. Methodist College was represented by one runner. All six members had basketball teams, and the league championship was awarded to S t. Andrews. The teams met in a single-elimination tournament on the College of Charleston Court on February 20, 21, 22, 1964. 122 CJ wnhouim SUE WATTS CHEERING SQUAD: Kneeling: Johnny Campbell, Courtney Shives, Reid Shoemaker.
