Salve! Buenos Dias! Bon Jour! However it is said, it means welcome whether in ancient Rome, sunny Spain or gay Paris. The spelling and sounds of the languages may differ, but students learning a foreign tongue are alike in their enthusiasm and interest as they pursue their assignments. Latin comes alive in the unadorned style of General Julius Caesar, in the fiery rhetoric of the politician, Cicero, and in the flowing verse of the poet, Virgil. Although students of French and Spanish must begin with the fundamentals of grammar and easy stories, they eventually pro- gress to the reading of novels in the original, such as Le Petit Prince, Le Bourgeois Gentilbom- me, Don Quixote, and El Cid. Through acquaint- ance with the language, history and culture of other countries, students gain an understanding and appreciation of foreign lands. Mathematics Algebra Il students suspect that pencil and paper would have been quicker than the slide rule. To freshmen, general math and Al- gebra I present at first only a maze of riddles, but with persistent endeavor, the x's and y's and the bewildering percent- ages are soon mastered. Geometry also has its diliiculties, but sophomores find solutions through logical reasoning. Al- gebra II and senior math broaden upper- classmen's knowledge of the infinite number systems. Those students following the School Mathematics Study Group Program find it both challenging and re- warding, Senior math students graph the function f xxl2x2 using critical points and inflection points There is more than one angle to a problem.
