Boo! 'H' FLINT ST. MICHAELS, September 28 The Bulldogs traveled to Flint St. Michaels on September 28, and returned with a hard-fought 7-0 victory. St. Andrew, still not playing up to par, dom- inated most of the play, although the winning mark- er wasn't scored until late in the third quarter by sophomore right half Gary Bellile. The game ended with the Bulldog defense holding tightly. BAY CITY ST. STANISLAUS, October S St. Stanislaus, dedicating their new stadium, came through with a 7-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Octo- ber 5. It could be seen from the beginning that this was to be a defensive battle. Neither team could penetrate into the others territory until, after a I5 yard penalty, the stags scored the winning touchdown. Bill Loiacano, Jerry Schram, and joe Kostrzewa star- red. This was the first time in I9 games that the Bulldogs had losr a V.I7.I,. encounter, ALPFNA CATHOLIC CENTRAL. October I2 ana,-'S gridders met their third defeat at the hands of Alpena Catholic Central 25-I4, on October 12. The Thunderbolts struck swiftly and surely in the first few minutes of the game to take an I8-0 lead, The Bulldogs finally caught fire in the second quar- ter. and scored twice on runs by Gary Bellile and Tom Luplow. The last half saw St. Andrew passfng desperately to score. but Fred Hubert. the Central quarterback, came through with six interceptions to thwart St. Andrews chances. Grid Tales Sports should create an atmosphere of accepting defeat in the same manner as you would accept vic- tory. The building of the body as well as the mind is essential. Victory is not pursued mainly for a better record. but for a deep sense of doing your best for Christ, in play as well as in work. Sportsmanship, that essential gold of sports, is re- vealed in many ways: obedience, practiced on and off the fieldg discipline, shown, by all meng and sacrifice, performed for the good of others. These are just a few phases of sportsmanship. They are used in the process of prospecting in view of our main goal, Christ, and our secondary goals: co-opera- tion and unselfishness towards our conquerers and fallible opponents. 43 CADILLAC, September I9 The 1958-59 football season for the Bulldogs open- ed with a loss to Class B powerhouse Cadillac, 39-O, on September 19. Cadillac, a superior team, scored at will in the first half and took a 26-O lead. The Bulldogs played them on even terms in the second half, but were unable to overcome the large deficit.
