Basketball ALPENA CATHOLIC CENTRAL December 14 Led by john Luplow, Raymond Ayotte' and Terrence Beechler, the Bulldogs failed in an at- tempt to down a powerful Alpena squad in the opener for both teams. The Bulldogs managed to keep the scoring even during the first quarter but the Bolts led at the half, 50-24. From then on Alpena continued to pull away, leading at the end of the third period by a 45-57 margin. The game ended in a 65-51 victory for the Alpena Catholic Central Thunderbolts. BAY CITY VISITATION December I9 The Bay City Visitation Panthers roar was weak when the Bulldogs handed them a 53-46 defeat loss at Arthur Hill gym. The game proved to be thrilling, a see-saw battle of rebounds and ball handling. Raymond Ayotte led all scoring with I4 points while jack Trudell paced the Panthers with 11 points. ST. MARY january 7 Excitement was the order of the evening at Central junior gym the night of january 7, as St. Andrew eked out a thrilling 55-50 victory over St. Mary's Red Raiders. The outcome was un- certain down to the closing seconds before the Bulldogs forged ahead to stay. Raymond Ayotte led St. Andrews scoring with 20 points followed by Terrance Beechler with 9 and john Luplow with 8. The Red Raider attack was led by Gary McDonald with 15 points. BAY CITY ST. STANISLAUS january 14 Showing an awesome display of height and scoring ability, the towering Stags of Bay City St. Stanislaus completely outclassed Coach Don Franz' Bulldogs as they played a close first half but failed dismally in the second. St. Stanislaus, one of the top-ranked teams in the state, could do no wrong in the second half as the Bulldogs were held to a meager 14 points while the Stags scored at ease, popping in 29. Raymond Ayotte and Terrance Beechler once again paced St. Andrew's futile attempt with Ayotte scoring 13 points and Beech- ler sinking 11. BAY CITY ST. JAMES january 16 In an old fashioned low scoring basketball game, the St. james Irish eked out a hard fought 39-37 victory from the Bulldogs. Both teams found it hard to splurge in the point department. With Raymond Ayotte pacing the Bulldogs, they fought hard near the end of the game but an Irish rally in the third quarter was enough to carry them on to victory. Ayotte totaled 15 points. BAY CITY sr. josEPH january 21 Speedy senior guard Terry Beechler paced the Bulldog scorers with 12 points as the Bulldogs coasted to an easy 64-57 victory over the cellar- dwelling Bay City St. joseph Yellowjackets. Ctxtch Franz substituted freely as he tried the quality of all his players during the course of the game. Raymond Ayotte followed Beechler with 11 points and jerry Cook was the leading Yellowjacket scorer with 16 points. SS PETER AND PAUL January 25 Trying desperately to find the winning combi- nation the Bulldogs found themselves on the short end of a 56-40 score as the game closed on a Crusader victory. SS Peter and Paul showed superiority in both their ball handling and spirit as St, Andrew never was in contention. Michael Walderzak was high scorer with 10 points. Hold that Ball
