Although slowed down by a highly ranked Alma team, the Bulldogs again showed their superiority by downing the Panthers 18-7. With the weather on the chilly side, the Bulldogs scored on the second play from scrimmage as Terrance Beechler raced sixty-one yards for the score. After Alma's almost immediate retaliation to tie the score, it was the Bulldogs' impressive forward wall that warmed up the chilly fans JACKSON ST MARY November 3 With an open date and two postponed games early in the season the Bulldogs tested the strength of a ackson St Mary team Early in the game it was evident the Bulldogs held the edge and they went on to trim the Celtics by a 25 7 score It was the ruggd Bulldog defense that stood out as the beefy line stopped the jackson runners and the second ary led by George Schnepf and jerry Bedford repeatedly knocked down passes BAY CITY ST JAMES November 10 In Bay City St james the Bulldogs met one of the scrappiest foes in the VPL After a closely played first half the Bulldogs pulled away and breezed on to their fifth straight victory 27 13 Terrance Becchler was scoring leader for the evenrng with two touchdowns George Schnepf and Paul Rummler each contributed one to the attack Hey there' You re pulling my leg 65 K 3 j . . , s ' 1 . . . , Q l If , ' 5 ,M--qt VV... The Bulldogs managed to keep the scoring even during the first quarter but the Bolts led at the half, 50-24. From then on Alpena continued to pull away, leading at the end of the third period by a 45-57 margin. The game ended in a 65-51 victory for the Alpena Catholic Central Thunderbolts. BAY CITY VISITATION December I9 The Bay City Visitation Panthers roar was weak when the Bulldogs handed them a 53-46 defeat loss at Arthur Hill gym. The game proved to be thrilling, a see-saw battle of rebounds and ball handling. Raymond Ayotte led all scoring with I4 points while jack Trudell paced the Panthers with 11 points. ST. MARY january 7 Excitement was the order of the evening at Central junior gym the night of january 7, as St. Andrew eked out a thrilling 55-50 victory over St. Mary's Red Raiders. The outcome was un- certain down to the closing seconds before the Bulldogs forged ahead to stay. Raymond Ayotte led St. Andrews scoring with 20 points followed by Terrance Beechler with 9 and john Luplow with 8. The Red Raider attack was led by Gary McDonald with 15 points. BAY CITY ST. STANISLAUS january 14 Showing an awesome display of height and scoring ability, the towering Stags of Bay City St. Stanislaus completely outclassed Coach Don Franz' Bulldogs as they played a close first half but failed dismally in the second. St. Stanislaus, one of the top-ranked teams in the state, could do no wrong in the second half as the Bulldogs were held to a meager 14 points while the Stags scored at ease, popping in 29. Raymond Ayotte and Terrance Beechler once again paced St. Andrew's futile attempt with Ayotte scoring 13 points and Beech- ler sinking 11. BAY CITY ST. JAMES january 16 In an old fashioned low scoring basketball game, the St. james Irish eked out a hard fought 39-37 victory from the Bulldogs. Both teams found it hard to splurge in the point department. With Raymond Ayotte pacing the Bulldogs, they fought hard near the end of the game but an Irish rally in the third quarter was enough to carry them on to victory. Ayotte totaled 15 points. BAY CITY sr. josEPH january 21 Speedy senior guard Terry Beechler paced the Bulldog scorers with 12 points as the Bulldogs coasted to an easy 64-57 victory over the cellar- dwelling Bay City St. joseph Yellowjackets. Ctxtch Franz substituted freely as he tried the quality of all his players during the course of the game. Raymond Ayotte followed Beechler with 11 points and jerry Cook was the leading Yellowjacket scorer with 16 points. SS PETER AND PAUL January 25 Trying desperately to find the winning combi- nation the Bulldogs found themselves on the short end of a 56-40 score as the game closed on a Crusader victory. SS Peter and Paul showed superiority in both their ball handling and spirit as St, Andrew never was in contention. Michael Walderzak was high scorer with 10 points. Hold that Ball Basketball BAY cirY v1siTAT1oN January 31 For the second time this season the Bulldogs overpowered the Panthers at Bay City. In this battle the Panthers staged a rugged first quarter to hold a 22-7 lead. Then the Bulldogs began to close the margin. With Robert Laundra and Michael XWalderzak leading the way, the Bulldogs cut into the lead and by the half trailed by only a few points. In the second half it was all St. Andrew as the Bulldog marlfcsmen began to find the range. Pulling out in front they were never seriously threatened again. The final score was 58-45 as Robert Laundra scored 22 points and Michael XX'alderzak scored 17 HOWELL February 4 In an exciting overtime battle, Howell snealced by St. Andrew by a 61-58 score. Howell earned the victory by outscoring the Bulldogs 7-4 in the overtime period. Michael Walderzak paced the losers with 17 points followed by Ronald Erway and Terrance Beechler who collected 16 and 15 points respectively. BAY CITY ST. STANISLAUS February 6 The towering Stags from Bay City invaded Saginaw and again overpowered a stalling Bull- dog attack 57-45. St. Andrew remained in con- tention throughout the first half with the score 21-19 in favor of the Stags at the opening of the third quarter. As in the first game between the two teams, St. Stanislaus couldn't miss the basket in the second half. The pin point shooting of the Stags slowly pulled them in front. After the Stags cleared the bench in the late stages of the game, the Bulldogs pulled to within 12 points as Michael Walderzak was scoring leader with 15 points. BAY CITY ST. JAMES February ii In the second meeting of two closely matched rivals, St. James and St. Andrew, the Bulldogs were defeated after a hard struggle 58-53. St. Andrew suffered its usual third quarter slump which proved to be costly in their defeat. Leading the Bulldog attack were Senior Terrance Beechler and Sopho- more Michael Walderzak with 15 and 10 points respectively. ALPENA CATHOLIC CENTRAL February 15 ln the late stages of the season the Bulldogs pulled an upset by defeating the Thunderbolts of Alpena Catholic Central 60-56. Vifith the home court advantage and the support of the students they put the game on ice in the last few seconds on a basket and two free throws by Robert Bordeaux.
