WOZNICKI, D.D Bishop of Saginaw 2 From the Pastor: May God bless our students of St. Andreufs High and keep in their hearts all the sound rules of living they have learned and will learn here. Our graduates of 1956 should so live that they will reflect honor upon themselves and their beloved school. Reverend Father O'Connor 3 Dedication To you, who first taught us to love God and God's world, Who set our feet on the path pointing toward our final home in Heaven To you who have loved us, sheltered us, Educated and prepared us to the fullest of your abilities, We take this opportunity to show our thanks By dedicating to you, our parents, this 1956 Andrean. 4 I955 - I956 Keeping the public informed of the weekly activities of St. Andrew High School is the job of the student radio announcers over WSAM and WSGW . They are: Gwen Robertson, Carl Roeser, Sue Smith, and Mary Jo Schmiegel. What an adventure! Our smallest actions take on a new meaning and a rich fullness When we realize that Christ is ever within us. Though in future years we may spread to far places, Through our occupations and situations may be many and varied, We will never be alone nor without a friend. For then, as now, we shall walk always with God, within. And when the last great adventure comes, How joyously we shall enter into His Presence To be with Him eternally in Heaven. Over and above their numerous religious efforts, the Sodalists practice a good deal of Christian charity. They have aided Guadalupe Center with food and clothing, and also with their own time. Since the Sodality is first and foremost a religious organization, along with this material aid are sent the prayers of the Sodalists in the form of Spiritual Bouquets. Sodalit QI FoLu'teen of Saint Andrew Sodalists attended the 1955 S. S.C.A. in Chicago. They were accompanied by their moderator, Sister Mary Casper, R.S.M. The spiritual year at St. Andrew High started out appropriately with the annual student retreat, October 10-12, given by the Rev. Frank Gartland, C. S. C. Father Gartland is currently the Editor of the Catholic Boy and National Director of the 'Knights of the Altar. Stressing parti- cularly the importance of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Father Gartland gave the retreatants an opportunity to reflect on their daily religious life. Father's advice and counseling should be of as- sistance to the students desirous of making progress in becoming worthy temples of the Holy Ghost. After losing their first game to a strong Lansing Resurrec tion team, the Bulldogs proved their mettle by making a powerful comeback in winning all but one of their re- maining games. In doing so the Bulldogs attained their goal, Valey Parochial League Championship, going un- defeated in four league games. September 18, 1955 Lansing Resurrection Lansing Resurrection, was able to gain a 15-6 victory over St. Andrew in the football season's opener for both schools. September 25, 1955 Flint St. Michael The first victory of the season for St. Andrew was certainly an impressive one. The Bulldogs powered over a highly rated Flint St. Michael team in handing them their worst defeat in his- tory 40-7. The victory was paced by the hard running of the backs and fine defensive line play. Football Bulldog halfback, Alvin Luplow, picks up a large gain in the Bay City, St. Stanis October 2, 1955 Visitation Led by their hard charging forward wall, the St. Andrew Bulldogs chalked up their second victory of the season by handing Bay City Visi- tation its first loss in three games. It took a good deal of chopping, but the Bulldogs finally whittled a small but spunky Visitation corps down in the second half. The two touchdowns scored in the second half by the Bulldogs provided them with a close 13-7 victory. October 9, 1955 Alpena Catholic Central St. Andrew flashing a combination aerial attack and powerful running game, routed Alpena Catholic Central in its first league game, 13-12. October 16, 1955 St. Stanislaus The bulldogs won their fourth game in five starts, and gained at least a share of the V.P.L. title by romping over St. Stanislaus 31-12 on a rain drenched field. Once again it was the Bull dogs' powerful running attack that provided the victory. October 21, 1955 Alma High St. Andrew's crackling ground attack made a shamble of one of the state's best defensive records as the Bulldogs smashed Alma High 34-14. It was the Bulldogs fifth triumph in six starts this season. October 28, 1955 Mt. Pleasant With quarterback, Bruce Gnatkowski injm-ed early in the game, the Bulldogs could not over- come the handicap as the Mt. Pleasant Oilers went to hand St. Andrew its second loss of the season by a score of 13-6. November 6, 1955 SS. Peter S Paul By downing SS. Peter S Paul with a score of 18-6 St. Andrew's became the Valley Parochial League B Division high school football champions. The Bulldogs had to slosh through rain, snow, and mud to defeat their traditional West Side rivals in what was a very close game until the last quarter when the Bulldogs scored their two winning touchdowns. Following this loss came a series of losses including one to SS. Peter and Paul 54-51, three games in the Flint Invita- tional Tournament and one to Alpena Catholic Central. This string of six losses was finally broken when the Bulldogs defeated the Stags of St. Stanislaus, Bay City, in a very close game, with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 57-52. Victory was short lived for the Bulldogs, for the fol- lowing game brought defeat from the Maroons of St. Mary in a close non-league game, 40-38. The Bulldogs won their second cage game by defeat- ing the Irish of St James, Bay City 63-47. After a close first quarter, the Bulldogs led throughout the game. The Thunderbolts of Alpena CC. ended victory for the Bulldogs by defeating them 65-62. The lead changed hands several times with Alpena on top at halftime 29-28. The second half was hard fought by both teams. For the second time during the season the Bulldogs met defeat at the hands of the Midgets of SS. Peter and Patil. The lead see-sawed back and forth until the final two minutes, when the Midgets rallied for a 5 point lead, to win 56-51. Following this loss were two more losses coming from St. Stanislaus, Bay City, and St. Mary of Saginaw. With only three games remaining in the regular season play, the Bulldogs defeated Visitation, Bay City two games in succession, but were defeated in the final game against Mt.
