I- Page Two 3 Foreword The Family Faces Forwardf'-Yes, and the tempo of that forward movement is so rapid and so significant that we, the Class of 1945, are sharply aware of its great importance. We realize that our best contribution to the war effort, to the attain- ment of peace, is a greater interest in family life, a more construc- tive contribution to our home, that sanctuary where a stable social life will help our great nation, America, to keep its vigor in victory as it has in War. This annual is devoted to the theme, The Family Faces Forwardf' The book is divided into three sections, each stemming from the central idea of family unity: The School and its Activi- ties, The Family and Home: The State, The Church. In peace there must be a sustained effort to make the returning service men and women realize that the home is facing forwardf' We pledge ourselves to pray, to work unceasingly until every person we contact Will stand ready to strive, to sacrifice for peace as freely as he is doing for victory. When family love and family unity are manifest on the home frontf' their influence will spread by word and by example. Eventually, the whole family of nations will feel the beauty of Christian unity, and will face forward toward happy home life on earth and the heavenly home where family love will reach its perfection. - MARGE La BARGE, Class President Salutatory We have come to the end of another chapter in our lives. We, the class of today, must take up the task of preserving the Christian peace that is our precious heritage. The home is the bulwark of a nation. Gazing with hopeful eyes, we see a world struggling to preserve its Christian ideals, those ideas for which its youth are making the supreme sacrifice. Aware of our helpless- ness and depending upon our Divine Teacher, we have chosen as our motto Nothing Without Godf' These things abide forever- The loves for which men sacrifice their lives . . f' The right to serve God in our own way is the greatest blessing bestowed upon mankind. This realization has finally come home to us. Happy memories of school days will be cherished by us always, for they are days in which we learned to work and play with this thought uppermost in mind, to give greater glory to God. Home, Church, Country-These are the great in- stitutions around which our lives centered. Nothing can ever change our way of living, for this is the will of l-lim who fashioned the world. - Dorothy Ankoviak Page Tho-ee Page Four To Alumni Serving God and Country ,, L .. 1-. .. 4 r OUR SCHOOL'S SERVICE FLAG I see no stars upon this service tlagg But I see boys, eager, full ot lite, Who once were here, who walked these halls, Who used these desks, these books, Who sang these songs that we sing now. I can see boys marching across a football field, Tired but triumphant, Bring honor to our school, Honor to St. Andrew's. I see no stars upon this service flag, But men, no longer boys, Marching across a different field, A field of Weary, bloody battle. Where are they now, the young Americans Who knelt but yesterday in this same pew A And at the altar rail received their King? I see St. AndreW's narne At Pearl Harbor, Wake, and Sicily, I see her sons in the skies, Upon the sea, Fighting to bring peace to our country. Dear God, oh, Watch these stars, And bring Your sons back safely to our shores, Oh, let there be no more Gold stars among the blue. -Class of 1945 The Most Reverend William Murphy, S.T.D. Bishcp of the Scrqinofw Diocese V Pdde Five Page Six The Very Reverend Timothy Kroboth Pastor's Message y 'l'he Family Faces Forwardl' What an appropriate theme for this 1945 Year Book! The Family. that is everybody, father, mother, children, look for- ward With apprehension. The war is nearly over, but the Peace-will it bring prosperity or adversity? That means a great deal to father and mother. The children look forward with anxiety. The War is nearly over, yes, but not the fighting or the post-war occupation of foreign lands. The future may bring to the graduates a long absence from family and home. The Catholic Family, may look forward with apprehension and anxiety, but not without comfort. Almighty God is always near the family which is Catholic in Faith and in deed. Many may inflict hardship and pain, but Almighty God tempers them with the sweet consolation of His nearness. To remain truly Catholic. in the meaning of the Church, requires much earnest prayer. You can pray with your lips, in your heart, or with your mind, and when these tire, you can let your good deeds be your prayer. ,With much earnest prayer the Catholic Family, father, mother, children, look forward, not only with hope and courage, but with holy enthusiasm. Parents of the graduates may be very happy in the knowledge that their sons and daughters are well trained in the holy science of saving their souls. Nothing Without God These things abide forever, Great loves for which men sacrifice their lives, That others may enjoy them in the years to be- A home, a flag, a shining torch, And over all the holy cross of Christ. We shall remember quiet hours of study, Books that inspired us, friends with whom we shared The fun and work of school .... Games, classes, All these pass swiftly in the days That open with the Mass and close with prayer. We shall remember always Sisters teaching us Here at St. Andrew's in a school Once consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Christ. We are Americans and citizens of a democracy Fighting for freedom, peace, and Christ. We are Americans who love The colors flying over land and sea. O proud flag blowing in the wind, Above our lives we hold you dear, Knowing the golden stars upon our service flag. Home is each family's kingdom Where love and understanding Make a realm of domestic bliss. We shall remember always the peaceful rooms of home, For well we know that where Our Lord is Master, The Christian home is temple Wherein peace dwells forevermore. The holiest gift of God is ours, Who guard a tabernacle in a sea of peace Beneath the beacon of a sanctuary lamp. The church is very quiet Where we can come to spend An hour alone with God. His love is ours, Binding us to Him like a chain of gold. These things abide forever- A shining torch, a flag, a homey And we shall find them in eternity Safe in the Heart of God. --CLASS OF 1945 Page Seven Page Eight President Marge LaBarge Class President 47 Senior Sensations 47 Chairman for Magazine Drive 47 Class Treasurer 37 Student Senate 4: Perfect Attendance 1-2-3-47 Eucharistic Committee 2-47 City Official 47 Committee Iunior-Senior Banquet 37 Chairman of Queen's Ball 47 Sodality l-2-3-47 Student Council l-Z-3-47 Cousin Iudy 47 Scfholastic Honor Societyrl'-23-47'3lee Club 1-2. 7 Vice-President Ioseph Bauer Acolytes l-2-3-47 Band l-2-3-47 English Club 27 City Official 47 S.S.C.A.
