He enlisted in the U.S. Navy.' He attended Basic Training in Orlando, Florida and OP9fGfl0f75 Specialist A School in Great Lakes, Illinois. In January 1979, OSSR Jones reported to USS JOSFPH STRAUSS CDDG 162 homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In August of 1981, he crossed decked to USS SOMMERS KDDG 342 where he served as CIC Watch Supervisor until February of 1982. In May 1982, he reported to FTC in Damneck, Vir- ginia as an OS A school instructor. Upon completion of his tenure at OS A School, OS 1 Jones reported to USS GUADAL CANAL ILPH 72 where he served as a Leading Petty Officer. While on GUADALCANAL, he quali- fied as a Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, selected as Sailor of the Year 1986, and was subsequently promoted to Chief Petty Officer in September 1987. During this tour Chief Jones also qualified as an Officer of the Deck fUnderway2, while serving as Leading Chief Petty Officer in Combat Infor- mation Center. After a successful tour onboard GUADALCANAL, Chief Jones, reported for a second Instructor Duty tour as OS A School from November 1989 to September 1993. During this tour he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer and was designated as a Master Training Specialist. In November 1993, Senior Chief Jones reported to the staff of Commander, Amphibious Squadron FOUR in Little Creek, VA where he served as Assistant Plans and Operations Officer and stood watch as Underway Staff Watch Officer for Amphibious Ready Groups. During this tour, he completed deployments in USS INCHON fLPH 122 and USS WASP ILHD 12. In April 1994, he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer and assumed the duties as Command Master Chief. In November 1995, Master Chief Jones was selected into the Command Master Chief Program in the Navy's first Com- mand Master Chief Selection Board. ln August 1996, Master Chief Jones reported to USS SPRUANCE KDD 9632 as the Com- mand Master Chief where he currently serves. Personal decorations worn by OSCMISW2 Jones include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal fwith two gold stars2 and National Defense Service Medal.
