' ,A Mg? . , .iw-..,,. ,N HD ,, -' V. Q ., -.. f-,.k.-U .. -- RA YMOND AMES SPRUANCE was a profes- sional naval otticerg a WARRIOR who com- manded the most powerful t1eet in the history of the world. His battleground was the Pacific Ocean, where he fought the sweeping na val cam- paigns of World War II. He began the war as an unknown Rear Admiral in command of four Pa- citic Fleet cruisers. By an act of fate, he was given command of two of the three aircraft carri- ers that won the Battle of Midway, the victory that stopped the offensive momentum of the Jap- anese navy. His Fifth Fleet became enormous: hundreds of ships, thousands of aircraft, hun- dreds of thousands of sailors, marines, soldiers, and airmen. His na val campaigns were fought over millions of square miles of ocean. His objec- tives were separated by vast distances. Spruance first seized the Gilbert and the Marshall Islands, two thousand miles from the main American base at Pearl Harbor. He envied no man, regarded no one as rival, won the respect of all with whom he came in contact, and went ahead in his quiet way winning victo- ries for his country . Spruanceis chief through- out the war was Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nim- itz. It is given to few Americans, said Nimitz, to serve their country so effectively and at such high levels as did this man. Fleet Admiral Er- nest J. King, the wartime Chief of Naval Oper- ations, considered Spruance the most intelligent flag officer in the United States Navy. The Navy has honored Raymond Spruance by giving his name to our ship, USS Spruance DD-963. This cruise book we dedicate to THE QUIET WA R- RI OR . ' f-VXI? - 9 , 1 lf i,f.iLei? Spruanc-e's ti- nal campaign was the invasion of Okinawa, an undertaking equal in magnitude to the Norman- dy invasion. Okinawa was adjacent to Japan - the American invaders were almost seven thou- sand miles from home. Spruance remained al- most unknown to the American public at war's end. He was shy and reticent and avoided public- ity. History, he felt, would judge his performance in war on the basis of what he did, not what he said. Spruancek leading characteristics were attention to detail, poise, and power of intelli- gent decision, wrote Samuel Elliot Morison. A Q. 'AQHA I A H' .'5b, .,,,. + - - 1 Jw! M DIVISION - You might call them- 'prime movers be- cause they maintain the piping, pumps of the condensate and feed systems, bearings, propellers, reduction gears, and gas turbines - all necessary to propel the SPRUANCE to and from her duty assignments. When it comes to engineering excellence, the 'prime movers of M Division are the best. R DIVISION - To call them Jacks of all Trades would be, in this case, exactly correct and proper, because the versatile men of R Division are carpenters, sheet metal workers, vvelders, pipe litters, and damage control men. Working as a smoothly coordinated team they maintain all damage control equipment, handle all plumbing chores in SPRUANCE's heads, and do just about anything else that needs to be done. 4 ' 'WF:5 ,,,,, Y V t C G 3 1 R Q Z H Ill C- 6 2 in U Sec of Navy James Forrestal poses with his subordinate officers on a visit to San Francisco. 1944. A ln the past seven years, 34 new destroyers were added to the Navy Fleet. All were built by Ingalls- 30 Spruance class destroyers and four Kidd class guided missile destroyersmdemonstrating our proven capacity for high rate production. Today, as the lead shipbuilder for the TICONDEROGA QCG 47l class of guided missile cruisers, Ingalls is putting the Shield of the Fleet, the Aegis combat system, to sea. TICONDEROGA, well ahead of her original schedule set nearly four years ago, is in final construction and testing-on her way to commissioning in January 1983. Follow on ships of the class are in various stages of production. J For the future, the Navy's next generation destroyer program fDDG 51l will demand the experience, capability and capacity necessary to design and build this 60-ship fleet between 1985 and the year 2000. lt will require the kind of exceptional capability, record of performance and lead ship experience established by Ingalls Shipbuilding during the past four decades. The pages of this book are dedicated to the hearty Sprumen who literally sailed the Seven Seas in the year 1982. Due to the ship's missions however, these pages lack the usual scenes of liberty ports and foreign celebrations. There weren't many, and those that we came upon were far from common. What you see here are mostly scenes of a sailor's life'at sea. Scenes that are unique to the USS SPRUANCE, yet they are being repeated by other ships and other crews even as you gaze upon them. The over 200 days underway brought the crew much closer together than ever beiore. Boys turned into men, technicians and mechanics became professionals, and self reliance became the watchword. By our cruise, the men oi the Quiet Warrior have helped keep the traditions of the sea and the mystique of sailors and far away places alive for those who will follow us down to the sea in ships. I'm certain that in the years to come, those who lived this odyssey and those who stayed behind to wait, will treasure the memories this book will evoke.
