You are now ready to begin the game of life, but remember Com- mencement is the beginning, not the end. The ex- tent of your success depends upon you, and your will- ingness to struggle and sacrifice. My sentiments are expressed in the following lines: You have each been given a bag of tools A formless rock and a book of rules; And each must make ere life has flown, A stumbling block or a stepping stone. HARVEST FESTIVAL Sue Washington 2ND PLACE EVALUATION Dr. Dotson began the task of preparing Springville School for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Under the leadership of Mrs. Martha McClendon, Head of the Steering Committee, the self-study of our school progressed with each teacher contributing, analyzing, looking in. Committees worked on various phases of our sys- tem, picking out the weakness and doing something about them. Mrs. Crowe, brought order, system, and beauty to a library that was in need, and in- creased the num- ber of books by hundreds, and films by the dozen. Very soon every stu- dent was aware of the evaluation ef- forts. Parents worked too. New cur- tains were hung in the lunch- room, and else- where. Paint- ing, and paint- ing, and then painting - rooms, 'n floors, halls, 'n doors. More and more n mo! „;:v5 The P.T.A. sponsored physical exami nations of each stu dent, and Doctors Bur- gess, McClendon, and Peep les gave time to this service. We are very grateful for the services rendered our students by these doctors. Bull-dozers cut new bus routes and leveled playgrounds and made new ones. To take care of serious drainage problems, grading and build- ing concrete walls were completed. A lounge for teachers was arranged - All the time these and other physical improvements were under way, committees were compiling data, making surveys, giving and hearing reports, discussing, working and reworking our philosophies of edu- cation in the various areas of learning. EVALUATION Mr. Dotson and his Manual Arts Class: Jimmy Richerzhagen, Benny Martin, Jerry Dailey, Alton Ruple, and Wayne Shirley with the help of Mrs. Lamar landscaped the grounds. This work took a lot of man hours, energy, and the needed shrubbery, do- nated by Mrs. Lamar's Committee, but will be reward- ing in beauty for years to come. tual of the serve much When the com- posite of all the committees was ready to print, it wound up in the Com - mercial Department with Miss Nancy McQuary andhertypingstu- dents doingtheac- page preparation book. They de- credit for the book. sr The typists: Jeanette Johnson, Car- rie Smith, Betty Wisner, Judy Lovell Gail Shirley and Patsy Pearson. Mrs. Forman drew floor plans and school entrances, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Burttram took the assembling . and binding job. S9 NGVIUE HIGH SCHOOl I? We will remember the week of April 25th when the group of distinguished men and women educators came, headed bv Mr. Guy Smith, for a week of study. Next, we apply for admission to the Southern Association. Whether we are accredited or not, we have been bene- fited by our efforts to grow and by our working together.
