TEIt '3 I As our last year at Springville High draws to a close, not only the graduating Seniors but also the lower classmen who are going on to the new school, are saying a fond farewell to the place that has been so dear to them for many years. Today the building is a place for studying and fun; tomorrow itwillrepre- sent lingering memories. It is fitting, therefore, that Springville's second yearbook uses this theme, We Shall Always Remem- ber, We Shall Never Forget as we say Good-bye, Springville High School. DEDICATION For years of faithful service to education of the youth of this county as a member of the County Board of Education, for his support of the Springville High School by giving liberally of his time and means, and for his understanding and unfailing interest in our problems, we dedicate this yearbook to: REUBEN R. Waid, C. K. Gant, Coach. THE c age TIGER Coach C. K. Preacher” Gant's first year at Springville High marked the third consecutive year that the Tigers have played as a win- ning team. Not only are the Tigers a winning ball club but they are true sportsmen as well. Never has any Tiger received anything but compliments from the game officials and other school officials on their terrific ability to win and their display of fair play. The outlook wasn't too bright on that hot day back in the fall as Coach Gant had only one full time veteran from last year's Sixth District Champion squad on the court with but a handful of inexperienced players with which to make a ball club. But then some amazing things took place as four boys came through to form probably the most well balanced team in this section of the state. Horace Hoss Robertson, the club’s only returning full time veteran, has been a tremendous wheel in the Springville attack. His ability to out jump taller men for tips and rebounds have turned many a possible defeat into another Tiger victory. James Trotter, a substitute on the A squad last year, turned out to be the team's top scorer and the best all around man on the court. James is as de- pendable and steady as ball players come. Sophomore Bill Lankford has been the biggest surprise that Springville High has seen. Bill, with comparatively no experience, blossomed into one of the steadiest men on the squad. He is tops in his forward position and he has a variety of shots, all of which he makes with a high percentage. Dalton Weems has shown Tiger fans that he wasn't to be left out when the subject came to improve ball players. Dalton started the season as just another man on the squad but he developed into a high scoring guard which with his excellent pass work has helped the Tiger cause no little. Freddie Mac Lovell rounds out the first five in his guard posi- tion. Freddie Mac is not the spectacular type of player but his na- tural ability to set up plays and handle the ball put him in the spot- light as a man that the team could not do without. Billy Chandler, Dean Jones, Leslie Riddle, and Tommy Tucker have added a valuable punch to the Tiger team with their capable ball playing. As this book goes to press, the Tigers have won twenty-five games and have lost but three. The three losses were at the hands of Gadsden, Ragland, and Douglas. Gadsden topped Springville in the first game of the season by breaking a 31-31 deadlock in the last period and went on to take the game by nine points. Two games later the Tigers lost to Douglas by five points and few Tiger fans had hopes of a winning sea- son. But the Tigers turned around and took twenty straight games before they lost to Ragland in a thriller of thrillers. Ragland jumped out to a big lead and kept it until the third period when the Tigers made 14 points to Ragland’s two at one stretch. The two teams fought neck and neck into the last minute of play with Ragland sporting a 3 point lead and possession of the ball. Springville broke up the Pur- ple Devils' freeze and scored two points with 15 seconds to go. Rag- land took the ball in bounds but the Tigers made them lose it out of bounds. With but 7 seconds to go the ball was thrown in from out of bounds and the Tigers immediately scored to give them a one point lead. But Ragland broke down the court and scored as the clock ran out. Mr. Gant has done a wonderful job of coaching the boys to victory after victory. His instruction has developed a smooth method of play and yet there is no definite pattern which the boys must follow. His careful observation and interest in the team shows as the boys want to win for him. Mr. Gant's faith in his men has more than rewarded him. It has made a championship team. % al Heads or tails?
