The lighted torch and keystone, symbols of enlightenment and knowledge, are the basic design of the pin which any student, upon whom this high honor has been bestowed, deems a great privilege to wear. Parents of the initiates are invited to the beautiful and dignified ceremony. Candidates, who must be in the upper third of their class and active in at least two extracurric- ular activities during their iunior and senior years, are considered for membership in the light of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to advance worthy leadership, to encourage development of character of high school youth-these are the purposes of the National Honor Society. The people in the ritual who exemplified the high ideals of this society were: Philip Day, Scripture Reading, James Smith, Regent of Honor, Richard McDaniel, Torch Bearer, Deborah Hubbard, Scholarship, Sylvia Beasley, Character, Fred Shively, Service, Sally Wallace, Leadership, Mariorie Mumma, Herald. A College Education Going away to College is always wonderful, but, please remember that the most important thing is a College Education. Distance, of course, adds to the glamour, and it may lead to extra costs for food, room, and trans- portation. Why be troubled while trying to compute costs at a distant college when you know the fixed costs at Wittenberg? Seniors of Springfield High School should apply AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE for admission to Witten- berg because, as you read this, many high school students have already applied. Their worries are over.
