CHOOLKEEPING 1n Spr1ng fleld goes back to the day of the log school the qu11l pen rough wooden slabs for seats and w1ndows glazed w1th Oll paper the days when woodcraft and a knowledge of f1rearms were consldered more lmportant than booklarnm There were few maps charts or other supplles Teachers were flrm b l1evers 1n the old max1m Spare the rod and spo1l the chlld The Blble was commonly the chlef read1ng book and the cathech1sm of d1f ferent churches was a part of the currlcu um It was not unt11 1850 that a system of free pubhc schools was lntroduced to Sprlng fleld At th1s t1me two c1t1zens were ap po1nt d to manage the schools Formerly schools had been ent1rely or 1n part sup ported by pr1vate funds The flrst school 1n Spr1ngf1eld was started 1n 1806 by Na thanlel P1nkered 1n a log cab1n on the northeast corner of Maln and Market Streets CFounta1n Avenue to usb In 1851 the people voted to bu1ld two school houses Eastern and Western Eastern has been replaced by the present McK1nley century of SCFVICG By 1880 Spr1ngf1eld had a central school bu1ld1ng wh1ch 1n cluded an elementary school and a hlgh school ln add1t1on to Eastern West rn Southern and Northern bu1ld1ngs M110 C W1ll1ams orgamzed the h1gh school Datlng to 1841 the hlgh school was supported partly by prlvate funds 1n 1869 however the property was leased to the Board of Educat1on of the Clty for publ1c school purposes F W Hurt was the f1rst super1ntendent of the publlc schools Jam s Cowles and Chandler Robb1ns succeeded h1m Then for a number of years the Off1C9 was d1S contlnued however the pr1nc1pals of the schools acted as superlntendent IH thelr respectlve dlstrlcts and 1n add1t1on to teachlng devoted a certam port1on of t1me to supervlslon J A Jackson who became supermtendent 1n 1873 was the f1rst to devote h1s ent1re t1me to the task of run n1ng the schools S1nce 1875 the OfflCe has been held by W J Whlte A E Tay lor W H We1r Carey Boggess John S Weaver George E McCord Frank Shel ton Homer Stevens and Edward E Holt The l1ttle red schoolhouse has forever d1S appeared from the Amer1can scene and 1n 1ts place a compl1cated 1nvolved system has developed however those small al most forgotten predecessors of our mod ern schools were the p1oneers 1n the flght agalnst superst1t1on and lgnorance Th1s 1S 1950 a s1gn1f1cant year 1n the h1s tory of our publlc school system denotlng a century of progress a far cry from the t1m when almost anyone could qual1fy as a teacher and a supermtendent devoted only a small port1on of hlS t1me to dlrect 1ng the schools If thos p1oneers of 1850 could be shown the Spflngfleld school system one century later they would see the present super 1ntendent bus1ly worklng on 1mprove ments 1n the educatlonal program Llbrar IGS are 1n operatlon even at the elem ntary level and classes for students need1ng speclal attent1on are bemg lmproved A comprehens1ve survey of the ent1re school system has been 1nst1tuted A1d1ng th s11per1ntendent IS the Personnel Dlrector vtho along w1th hlS many other dutles ma1nta1ns all reports related to staff and pup1l personnel lf those forerunners of our modern school system could b taken on a tour of the Clty they would marvel at the bu1ld1ng program apprommatlng S2 200 000 now ln progress These schools 1nclude Elm wood Fulton Lagonda Hardlng Road and an add1t1on to Schaefer Junlor H1gh The Board of Educat1on the pol1cy mak mg body keeps the complex system run n1ng smoothly and efflclently maklng plans for lmprovlng our educatlonal op portun1t1es and dev1s1ng ways to g1ve us more value from our educatlon Those plcneers would observe that we are bene f1t1ng greatly from the mnumerable 1m provements and changes brought about s1nce 1850 School lunch programs health serv1ce and 1nstruct1on a wlde readlng program and parent teacher assoclatlons should show them that our efforts to 1mprove our edu catlonal process and fac1l1t1es have a def 1n1te purpose and that our goal 1S to get the most out of our schools - , 1 I 7 I 7 . 7 7 7 1 9 ' . 5 U . 7 . . . .
