4102137 I want to give the The faith to conquer crowding doubts and fears Beauty for ashes may I give always: I'm sure I shall not pass again this way. of joy for tears, I want to give good measure running o'er, And into angry hearts I want to pour The answer soft that turneth wrath awayg I'm sure I shall not pass again this way. To Eileen Richards Boone An open letter Dear Eileen, We seniors can't imagine what we would have done without your kindly assistance and cheery presence. We want to dedicate our annual to you, not only for what you have done for us, but for what you have meant to us during our years at Amsterdam. p This school is your Alma Mater, too. You were graduated in the Class of 1935. Following graduation you attended Kent State Uni- versity. You have been the faithful secretary here at Amsterdam for the last nine years. We know that you have one daughter, Karen, a member of the Sophomore Class. And that you are now happily married to Harry Boone, a mechanic at the Lockhart Motor Co. in Steubenville. Sincerely yours, The Senior Glass

41G2J.f?'? s e..llmQ..s. .X a OUR ALMA MATER In 1926 the high school was erected. The first Board of Ed- ucation was as follows: H. F. Polen, pres., William Williams, James Kirkland, Wesley Campbell, and William Baxter. There have been seven superintendents and principals since the school was built. The first principal and superintendent-one person served both offices at that time-was Mr. Zeltman. The rest were as fol- lows: Mr. Huston, who served for 15 years, then Mr. Woolman, Mr. Hartman, Mr. Alley, and Mr. Bailey. The year Mr. Bailey served was the first year that the school was consolidated with Bergholz. Mr. Bailey was the first superintendent of the district. Mr. Buchanan, the first principal of this building, is still holding the position. After Mr. Bailey came Mr. Gregg, who has been the superintendent for six years. There have been only three Janitors: Harold Fellows, Mr. Dudgeon, and Mr. Morgan. The first athletic coach was Peg' Elsesser. For six straight years this school placed first, in scholar- ship tests in the county. Each of these years some students went to state and placed high there, there being several first during those years in various subjects. One year the entire school rated third in scholarship contests in the state among 1000 schools in Ohio in our class. In 1956 and 1937 Amsterdam went to state in the basketball tournament and in 1936 were Ohio runners-up. The coach was Don Hogan. In 1936 Bob Anderson was chosen All-State in basketball, a first and only honor for this school. In recent years the music groups have gone to district and then state and have received superior ratings. In the science field there have been two who have received superior ratings at state. As the result of a superior rating in the state in the Ohio Aca- demy of Science Day Contests, Eleanor Dailey received a scholar- ship to Ohio State University in 1952.
