70 On the road to state With first place at stake James Derkowski Rose to the occasion by posting a 5-3 Victory over state champ Aldine. The Tigers came out on the short end of an l l-7 slugfest with Conroe which Slowed the Tiger machine. Derkowski snapped the team back against Westchester with a sweet 4-2 victory Which put the Tigers in first place to stay. Keeping up the pace, the Tigers rolled over Cy-Fair 6-O and Memorial 5-0. SW eliminated Spring Branch 5-2 and won District as Gene DeWitt pulled out a Squeaker past MacArthur 5-4. This ran their district record to l l-3 and Their season record to I7-'I l . Cleburne was the Tigers' bi-district opponent. The Yellow Jackets gave the Tigers little Resistance as Derkowski Pitched 5-l and 4-l victories. SW thus started their trek toward state. James Derkowski righted the Tigers with a Brilliant l4 inning 2-0 victory over Conroe. Gene DeWitt continued the shutout streak by Pitching a 5-0 game against Cy-Fair. Derkowski blasted two homeruns against Memorial, But in the end two squeeze bunts by Tommy Boni and Gary Dial proved to be the margin. This made the final score 7-5. Defending champion Spring Branch was next, But the Tigers proved to be too much to handle. Taking advantage of an lncompetent Bear defense, The Tigers put all six runs together in One inning to coast to a 6-4 win.
