This was rhe firsr year rhor Viking Awards were given. Srudenrs who received rhese awards were rec ognized for rheir oursronding work and efforr inside rhe House of Represenrarives House members nominored and elecred rhe winners. Receiving rhe award for Srudenr Science Training was sophomore Jock Dowers. For six weeks our of rhe summer or rhe College of Charlesron, Jock srudied comparers and nonrradirional oreas of morh. Afrer being nominored by rhe foculry, Korhy Nerrles was selecred by rhe Doughrers of rhe American Revo- lution for rhe Good Qrizens Award. Scholarships Jimmy Drown and Tony Sellawoy were selected os se mifinalisrs for rhe Nononol Achievement Scholorship for Outstanding Negro Students For rhe srudenrs who would nor serrle for over age , rop-of-rhe-heap seemed more oppropriore. Nor only did rhese srudenrs finish rheir high school years wirh high rankings, bur rhey also starred rheir college years wirh a big plus-recognirion and scholarships. David Louder compered for borh rhe William Ran- dolph Heorsr and rhe Cenrury III Scholarships. To qualify for rhe Heorsr scholorship, a srudenr musr be nominat- ed by rhe entire school disrricr, musr have served in srudenr government, and musr have passed a currenr events examinarion. For rhe Cenrury III scholarship, a currenr events examinarion musr also be passed and an essay wrirren. Narional Merir Scholarship semifinalisrs were chosen from rhe results of rhe PSAT resr. Qualified srudenrs were in rhe rop half of one percent in rheir respective srares The Wofford Scholarship was accepted by Marshall Martin. Martin received rhe nomination based on his SAT scores and class rank. The University of South Carolina chose irs own schol- ars for rhe firsr year in 1981. From rhe applications submirred ro rhe Office of Admissions, scholars were selected on rhe basis of SAT scores, class rank, and academic promise. John Gardner was a semifinalisr from Spring Valley. Jimmy Drown, Gerald Free, and Tony Sellaway were semifinalisrs for rhe Narional Achievement Schol arship for Outstanding Negro Srudenrs Throughout rhe narion, only fifteen hundred semifinalisrs were selected, based on rheir PSAT scores. 22 Scholarships
