Cream of the crop Coroline Sulivon and Kathy Mayer were chosen for rhe 1980 Polmerro Girls' Stare rhe panel's recommendations Sponsored by rhe American Legion, rhe enrire Governor's School pro- gram was developed ro meet rhe needs and interests of gifred ond rolenred youths. During rhe second week in June, six srudenrs attend- ed Boy's Girl's Store. Nominated by rhe faculty, these srudenrs were selected on their academic achieve- ments and their abilities in leadership. Each student who went to rhe school spent one week of intensified study in education and government that helped ro build self-confidence and character. David Bruno, a senior who attended Boy's Store, reminisced, It was rough while I was there, bur when I left I realized it was a very worthwhile experience. 18 Honors When June 1 rolled around lasr year, most srudenrs couldn’t wait ro throw away their books and head for Myrtle Beach, S.C. Bur there are exceptions ro every rule. Fourteen srudenrs disappeared from rhe commu- nity over rhe summer and arrended government sponsored workshops ro broaden their education. De- pending upon rhe versatility and reliability of rhe indivi- duals, this cream-of-rhe-crop society excelled in aca- demics in every way. From June 17 through July 28, eight srudenrs attend- ed Governor's School ar rhe College of Charleston. To be eligible, srudenrs must hove a high grade point average ond class rank. All eligible srudenrs who at- tended rhe school were screened by a panel of distin- guished educators. Selections were made based on
