18 Academics Spring Valley offered one of the most complete academic programs of all the high schools in South Caro- lina. The curriculum was varied to fit the needs of every student. Courses in almost every department ranged from resource to honors or advanced placement. The ALERT and SPACE pro- grams gave talented and gifted stu- dents the chance to show their true abilities. Juniors and seniors were given several opportunities to speak with representatives from colleges, uni- versities, and technical schools. The first of these came on October 12, ED-OPS Day. Over forty institu- tions participated in this two-hour event. A financial-aid workshop was held on November 14. Parents and students were able to find out about the different types of financial aid available from schools, loan com- panies, and the government. The school was honored to have The South Carolina State Teacher of the Year for 1979 chosen from its faculty. Col. Jerry M. Sage, a teach- er in the Social Studies Department, received this honor. The faculty of Spring Valley and Wilson Vocational strove to prepare students for work or further educa- tion after graduation.

Administration A fine team of administrators headed by Ben Nesbit, led the facul- ty and students in the areas of aca- demic programs, student activities, and discipline problems. Their work helped insure a smooth school open- ing in spite of the division of the student body and the addition of a freshmen class. In carrying out their duties these eight administrators helped to carry on a Spring Valley tradition. 20
