Besides building a float, decorat- ing a window, and cleaning up after parties, the class was represented very well in band and vocal groups. Six fresh- men sang in the All-State Chorus in Des Moines during Thanksgiving vacation The freshmen also participated in several groups that received Division l ratings at the spring music contest The boys of this class made a fine record with their basketball team this year and several competed in football and track also One of the girls volleyball teams won the volleyball tournament which is rather unusual for a fresh man team By these records we can see that the freshman class is a fine addition to our high school Certainly they will continue to do better in the future ROW ONE Charleen Kelly, Patricia Fronk, Colleen Kelly, Sharon Bahl, Marianne Swanson Mary Fries Kather ine Rosenberg ROW TWO: Jerry Foote, Dennis Zellaha, Deidra Clawson, Carmen Ramberg Darlene Perkins Harry Hagedom, Gary Haugland. The pint-sized backcourt man accumulated 296 points in 19 outings on the season for a 15.5 point-per- game average. The Redmen finished the campaign with an overall record of 9 wins and 10 losses. In Lakes Conference play the Indians finished in fifth place with 6 victories and 8 losses. Their offensive average for all games was 54.4 points compared to a defensive average of 50.2. In Lakes Conference tilts, the Redmen held a 54 to 53.6 edge in averages. Scoring leaders' totals for the season are as follows: G FG FT T Avg. James 19 126 44 296 15.5 Duke 17 83 35 201 11.8 Thoreson 18 81 49 211 11.7 Singer 19 45 22 112 5.4 Ahrens 5 8 6 24 4.8 I-Iartoog 16 28 8 64 4.0 Moore 17 21 25 67 3.3 Koppen 7 9 3 21 3.0 Leading rebounder for the Indians was sophomore Len Hartoog who grabbed off 44 offensive and 72 defensive rebounds. Tom Duke was next high with 34 offensive and 70 defensive recoveries. The other squad mem- bers had rebounding records of: Thoreson, 32-64, Moore, 31-59g James, 22- 645 Singer, 27-65, Kuehl, 7-16, and Koppen, 5-12. Individual honors for single game output were shared by James and Duke. Each hit for 28 points in one tilt--Duke racking up his total against Cherokee and James hitting his against Sheldon. Thoreson's single game high was against Sibley when he dropped in 19. Moore had 14 against Em- metsburg, Singer 13 in the Storm Lake contest, Hartoog hit for 11 in the Spencer tilt and Koppen had 11 against Emmetsburg. A statistic of significance that illustrates the aggressive type of basketball played by the Indians this year is their decisive margin in the interception department. The Redmen were responsible for 198 ball steals, compared with 66 by their opponents. Thoreson was the leading intercepter. FRONT ROW: The 1959 track team, coached by Mike Fleming, consisted mainly of lower classmen. The squad as a whole lacked experience, but they made up for it with their determination and will to work. Their youth gives the Indians a chance to build. With the experienced underclassmen coming up the team should be even more powerful next year. The track season was not only successful so far as competition goes, but was good as far as the weather was concerned also. There were twenty-two boys out this season, proving that interest in track is growing steadily. The schedule contained several dual and triangular meets which gave more boys a chance to earn letters and gain experience in conference competition. This season a record number of students turned out to qualify for the five scheduler meets. The squad did not win many meets but wil a little emphasis on the sport, scores are sure to be reduced.
