He is a 1964 NBOTC graduate of the URIVGVSIIY OI Notre Dame and was commissioned as an Ensign in August of that year. He received a Master of Business Administrative degree from the University of Hawaii in 1971 and graduated from the United States ArmY Wa' College in June 1982. He served as Executive on USS NASHVILLE LP , . ' I l D - 13lg and as Executive Assistant to the Director of Plans and Policy, Rapid D9PI0YmemJ0m Task ' ForcefUnited States Central Command. He assumed command of the USS Fort Snelling QLSD - 307 in March 1984 with the ship assigned to the U.S. Multi-National Peacekeeping Force Lebanon. Following FORT SNELLlNG's decommissionin ' S ' ' Q In elbtember 1984 he served as Chief Staff Officer for Commander, AmPhIbI:Jg35 Squadron Twelve.
