7iT ' 'lv' SHIP'S HISTDRY , commissioned on 8 June 1956. The ..-I-Op DOGH, as she is known inthe Fleet is currently the oldest amphibious ship inthe ' h d lo ed often to the Mediterranean and Caribbean. In the Mediterranean, she participated in the Atlantic Fleet and as ep y i - amphibious landing at Beirut during the 1958 Lebanon crisis and steamed 58 consecutive days at sea in readiness forthe Cyprus Crisis. In the Caribbean, she has taken part in training anti-submarine warfare techniques and in testing techniques of vertical envelopment. She has gained national attention by rescuing 282 American and other foreign nationals stranded in Beirut during the 1976 Lebanon Civil War and in 1981 when she represented the Atlantic Fleet during a goodwill cruise in the Caribbean Sea area. For that later action, she was awarded, the Meritorious Unit Commendation by the Secretary of the Navy. ln March of 1982, the SPIEGEL GROVE became the first ship in her class to successfully complete a Combat Systems Post Overhaul Exam. The SPIEGEL GROVE was the first ship to work with the Landing Craft Air Cushion Boggs lLCACl. The SPIEGEL GROVE was busy during 1983 as she participated in Solid Shield '83, deployments to South America for UNITAS XXIV and West Africa for WATC '83. In late 1983, SPIEGEL GROVE made a deployment above the Arctic Circle for United EffortfTeamwork '84g conducting exercises with our NATO allies. The remainder of 1984 found the ship preparing for another deployment to the Mediterranean. The SPIEGEL GROVE conducted extensive training operations throughout the summer months, including several with Marine and Army Forces. SPIEGEL GROVE spent most of 1985 and 1986 in a Restricted Availability lRAVl repair period replacing engineering equipment as well as upgrading habitability conditions throughout the ship. The latter half of 1986 saw the installation of the Vulcan Phalanx Close - ln Weapons System lClWSl. Early 1987 brought the completion of the RAV, as well as all required examinationsltraining leading up to the deployment with Mediterranean Amphibious Readiness Group 3-87. The USS SPIEGEL GROVE is designated a Landing Ship Dock. Her primary mission is to carry various type boats, vehicles and construction equipment used in amphibious warfare. She also has the capability of launching and landing helicopters carried on her flight deck. The most striking feature of the ship is a huge well deck which can be floated toa depth often feet by ballasting. Once down, with her stern gate open, the various landing craft can be launched to proceed to the assault area under their own power. The ship also has two 50-ton cranes which she is able to hoist equipment topsige for storage and transport. Last but not least, the hallmark of the LSD is versatility, because of her many capa iities.
