The primary mission of USS SPIEGEL GROVE QLSD-321 is to carry the various types of boats, vehicles and construction equipment used in amphibious warfare. The most striking feature of the ship is the huge well which can be flooded to a depth of 10 feet by ballasting down. ln preparing for an amphibious operation, the well is flooded to permit assault landing craft loaded with men and equipment to enter through the stern. The water is then pumped out and the assault craft settle on the well deck. The name SPIEGEL GROVE comes from the name of the estate of Ruther- ford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States, in Fremont, Ohio. An uncle of Hayes gave the estate its name. Spiegel, in German, means x 58 if ' l l mirror, and he chose the name after roaming about the estate marvelling at how the pools of rain water under the trees reflected like mirrors. The ship, commissioned on June 8, 1956, is 510 feet long and displaces 11,200 tons. She has a complement of 19 officers and 320 enlisted men, and she can carry, in addition to crew, 311 troops and their equipment.
