Spiegel Grove Shines in the Caribbean Almost everyone has 'dreamed about getting away from it all and escaping to some tropical island to lie on the beach and sip exotic drinks. For the men and embarked personnel Ol USS SPIEGEL GROVE tLSD-32i and USS JOSEPHUS DANIELS QCG-273 that dream came true during Carib- bean Ops'8l. 5 During the one month cruise sailors and Marines from both ships got a taste of six sunny Caribbean ports - Cartagena, Colombia, Willemstad. Curacao, Caracas, Venezuela, Castries, St. Lucia, Roseau, DominicaL and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Plenty of good liberty was coupled with an important mission to perform. That mission was to promote goodwill, respect, and esteem for the United States and to present the U.S. Navy as a professional and credible instrument of United States foreign policy, dedicated to maintaining peace. security, and freedom of the Carib- bean Sea area. Admiral Harry D. Train, ll, Com- mander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, was embarked aboard JOSEPHUS DANIELS for the first two weeks of the goodwill cruise. Vice Admiral J. D. Johnson, Jr., Commander Naval Sur- face Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, represented Admiral Train during the latter half of the cruise. As open house ship in each port ot call, SPIEGEL GROVE hosted thousands of visitors. Marines from Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, and sailors from Assault Craft Unit Two and the Special Warfare Detachment, both from Little Creek, manned several static displays in the well deck, demonstrating the various tasks and equipment used in amphibious warfare.
