'i i jf 'i fx, affix' , J., Ship's Histor The USS SPIEGEL GROVE was built at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and was commissioned on 8 June 1956. She is named in honor of the home and estate of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States. The SPIEGEL GROVE has often deployed to the Mediterranean and Caribbean. In the Mediter- ranean, she participated in the amphibious landings at Beirut during the Lebanon Crisis in 1958 and steamed 58 consecutive days at sea in 1964 and 32 consecutive days in 1974 in readiness during the Cyprus Crisis. Again in 1976 she steamed 66 consecutive days in readiness for the eventual evacuation of foreign nationals from Beirut, Lebanon. In the Caribbean she has taken part in training on antisubmarine warfare techniques and in testing the techniques of Vertical Envelopmentf' In additio h h l d k assault. n, s e as p aye ey roles in numerous stagings of the amphibious SPIEGEL GROVE is designated as a Dock Landing Ship. Her primary mission is to carry the various types of boats, vehicles and construction equipment used in amphibious warfare. She also has the capability of launching helicopters carried on her deck. The most striking feature of the ship is a huge Well which can be flooded to a depth of ten feet by ballasting down. 0nCC down, with her stern gate Opened the ship can launch the various landing craft she has carried h to t e area of assault. These craft can then be driven out and to the beach under their own P0W9f- This ship also has two 50-ton cranes with whic age and transport. The hallmark of a Dock 'L employments. Because of her many capabilities, She is of constant value to the Navy. Commander Avila is from Huntington Park, California and received his commission through the ROC Program after graduating fl'0tI'l Whittier College in 1957. His first sea tour was as the EleCtl'0t'liCS Material and CIC Officer of the USS HARRY E, HUBBARD CDD-7481. Other tours were with the staff of COMDESRON NINE as Communi- cations Officer. Operations Officer on the Uss RENVILLE KAPA-2273, and as the Executive Officer of the USS O'BRIEN KDD-7251. They have three children, Jon, Steven, and MiCl1'3lle- Lieutenant Commander Kenneth Hartkopf United States Navy I 1975 - 1976 Executive Officers A native of Chicago, Illinois, LCDR Hartkopf joined the Navy after attending four years of college and acquiring a BS at Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois. With the completion of Officer's Candi- date School, LCDR Hattkopf was commissioned Ensign in june 1964, five months after he jained the Navy. ln june 1964 LCDR Hartkopf reported aboard the USS FORSTER QDER-3341 and served as CIC Officer and Air Controller until October 1966. November 1966 found LCDR Hartkopf attending U. S. Navy De- stroyer School in Newport, R. I. Seven months later LCDR Hartkopf graduated and was headed for the USS R. H. MCCARD. LCDR Hartkopf served on the USS R. H. MCCARD CDD-8221 from july of 1967 to july of 1969, as Engineer Officer. In July of 1969 LCDR llartl-topf attended the Navy Warfare School for one month prior to becoming Executive Officer aboard the USS CONSTANT CMSO-4273 in September of 1969 serving until November of 1971. LCDR Hartkopf recezved orders to COMSC Far East in Yokohama, Japan, as Director of the Cargo,'Tanker Division in December of 1971 and joined the SPIEGEL GROVE in May of 1976. He is married to Betty Royal of Charleston, S. C. and they have two children, jennifer and Alyson. LCDR Charles Robert English was born in Brevard, North Carolina. He received a BS in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he was a NROTC Cslndidaw- He was commissioned on 6 June 1961 and reported to the USS CONY fDD-5083 as DCA. In 1963 he was transferred to the USS OGLE- THORPE CLKA-1001 as DCA. In 1965 he attended the U. S. Navy Postgraduate School in Monter- ey, California, where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering. LCDR English then reported to USS RANKIN LLKA-1035 in 1967 35 Engineer Officer. In 1970 he was at the Armed Forces Staff College, then went to Washington to work for NAVSHIPSYSCOM as Proiect Officer for new construction AOR's. In 1973 he was Materiel Officer for COMPHIBRON TEN Staff LCDR English reported aboard SPIEGEL GROVE as Executive Officer in 1975. LCDR English holds the following medals: Navy Commendation, Navy Achievement with star, Navy Expeditionary, and Navy Unit Commendation.
