VIHIUES What can be said about the island of Vieques? It's a pretty desolate island to the east of Puerto Rico. On the other hand, there's Camp Garcia. For the Navy, Vieques means Amphibious Landings, hard work, early reveille and late taps. It means a modified steaming watch and maybe even a quarterdeck watch. There are boats to depart the well, and before you know it, they have to be taken aboard again. For the Marines, Vieques means training, for very little training can be con- ducted aboard ships On Vieques, there are no stuffy compartments, only fresh air and an overhead of stars. But, there's very little hot chow, and a great many WC' rations.

The new is called Santurce and is on the mainland. The old is called Old Town by the natives and is on an island surrounded by a wall. Entertainment was at an all time high during our visit, for December through March is the tourist season. u For those with dollar signs gleaming in their eyes, looking for a quick fortune, the Casino's at the Caribe Hilton, the Americana, the El San Juan and many others were more than willing to offer their accommoda- tions, that is until the big tourist money spenders came in. John Davidson, Dr. Shawn Masters, Terry Malone, Eddie Fisher and Connie Stevens offered a variety of fine night club entertainment---if you had that treasured USO pass. But, for those who didn't want the big time hotels or the big name entertainment, there was always old San Juan. Old Town had a great deal to offer. Fort Moro offered the camera bug an ideal place to shoot up some film. Or you could just stroll through the narrow, hilly streets looking at a hundred years of history go bye. For the sunbather or girl watcher, USO pool passes to the big hotel pools came in handy. If the beaches were more appealing, there were plenty of them to choose from. The conflict between the old and the new made for an enjoyable port visit. Don't you agree?
