' .JM ef -44- 91uv-, - ' ' MMMU 4 A MESSAGE FRoM THE CAPTAI Our 51 day cruise is now over, but the memory lingers on. Before we get back in the groove again as 41 sub- marine tender at Ballast Point, I want to thank you for the superlative performance youvve put forth over the past seven weeks, and to say that I have been proud to serve with you at sea as well as in port. Some specific Mwell dones'9are very much in order and may help to prove that the memory does linger on: To the radio gang, for getting the messages through on many agonizing nights when it seemed as if no one could hear us, even Kodiak! To Repair Department, for the long hours of RER qRepair and Repaintj which resulted in spotless shops and interesting exhibits for over 15,000 visitors. To the Supply Department, who fed us, paid us, kept our uniforms clean, located anchor and chain all over the world and made sure we had enough cigarettes. To the Medical and Dental Department, for curing our sunburn and aching teeth, and for twice upholding our new reputation as the best damn hospital ship at sea. To Navigation and Operation, for getting us from port to port, for keeping up with all the move- ment report changes and for a radar that wouldn't quit. To the Weapons Department, for sweating fifty torpedoes aboard at Pearl in a no-sweat evolution. To all the Admin people for keeping our heads above the deluge of paper work every time we did hit port. To the gunners, for teaching hundreds of us how to properly use small arms: and for killing the dozen of men who went overboard! And the two biggest well dones of all: First, to the Engineering Department, for keeping 15,000 tons of aging ship plowing along, in- spite of little breakdowns, big breakdowns, stack fires, generator arcs etc. Also for the success of our damage control drills, for the air conditioning Qin spots!j for the fresh water and, most of all for their patience and hard work, sometimes around the clock. Finally, to the Deck Department, for holystoning an inch off our acres of spotless decks: for offloading and onloading our ground transportationg for mooring for anchoring! us safely and neatly each time we hit portg for a lot of RRR on their owng for waxing my little red bomb above and be- yond the call of duty: and above ali, for their superb seamanship under dangerous and trying con- iitions on the two occasions when we brought the injured men aboard. To each and everyone of you. I say that this cruise was a success because you made it so. We had our ups and downs, but we always came out on top, because of you. WELL DONE and thank you to every officer, chief and blue water sailor aboard! 91' THE COMMA DI G OFFICER 'Y-We 5 -,,'i,:,w-,w 5,1-W fm' Eff' 'T' E,-v.2w 4y.. A . Q mf. Mr ,I .,, 1 1' rr W A ' Wh Wx. OUR HIP ,.h,,f, . W1 fzfvwlfffwzg, ,7 ff ,N XY- SHIPS HIC TORY SPERRY was named after Elmer Ambrose Sperry, inventor and pioneer of sub- marine construction. She was launched December 17, 1941 at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, the first major ship launched after the start of World War II. Command of SPERRY was assumed by Captain R.H. Smith on her com issioning date of May 1, 1942. Following shakedown she arrived in Pearl Harbor August 2, 1942, to begin her record of service in World War II. She traveled to Australia, New Caledonia, Majuro Atoll, Eniwetok Atoll, Guam and Midway, ser- vicing submarines that in turn reached out to strangle Japanese shipping. Since World War II, SPERRY has provided services to submarines operating from San Diego. In 1961 the ship was modernized and is now capable of ser- vicing the nuclear submarines. SPERRY is a miniature city and offers the following services and facilities to her crew and the crews of submarines alongside: A. Barber, laundry, dry cleaning, post office, and a well stocked ships store. B. Medical and dental care equal to that available at any large shore station. C. Religiaus services are held each Sunday with special family worship on the third Sunday of each month. The repair services of SPERRY are comparable to those of an industrial shipyard. Logistics services, including pay, food, fuel oil, water, and ammunition are supplied to all submarines tended. The completeness of the services offered by the SPERRY is the basis for the ship's motto .............
