In 1383, then, the school was moved to a group of army bartacks suituated on the present site 0F the campus. From such humble beginnings. no location of its own in 1381, to several army barracks in 1583, lo a modern campus 0F 32 acres and 22 buildings in 1952, with another dormitoryr about to get underway, Spelman has show marvelous growth. The gruwth Of the young developing instilutien showed itself in other areas. This growth reveals not so much a shifting of emphasis as much as a broadening of purpose and sphere of operations. Misses Giles and Packard had as their main purpose the training of young Black women to be teachers. missionaries and church workers. Great emphasis was put on preparing teachers, through the introduction of a normal course. A college preparatory course was intro- duced, and an industrial department, which taught cooking, sewing, house- keeping, laundering, and printing assumed a high priority in the curriculum because of a desire to make education practical. In the decades of the 192055 and 30's, through the lapping off of the inductrial department, the discontinu- ance of the high school, the changing of the name and the emphasizing of the liberal arts curriculum to Spelman College the institution became accredited by the Southern Association of
