It Was a Wonder! recalled the late Mrs. Annie Alexander; an early alumna of Spelman, in a taped statement of love and appreciation played as a part of Spel- man's Contennial observance. It was something, con tinued Mrs. Alexander, hhthat the Negro women will remember as long as there's one living. They?! always remember the sacri- fice and the dedication and the love for our dear Jesus that helped them tMisses Packard and Cilest to establish Spelman Seminary and oh if they could see it now and see what they have done - if they could only see it now they would be so gfad. Mrs. Alexander, over her life of 105 years was able to see this wonder. She saw Spelman then and she saw Spelman now. And what she saw now that she didn't see then was cause for unrestrained joy and happiness. The wonder is what has happened to Spelman during these first one hundred years of her existence. When the Misses Packard and Giles arrived in Atlanta that cold and windy night in April, 1861 tactually it was April Fool's Dayl, they had certain financial commitments made by New England Baptists to assist them in their efforts to set up a school for Negro women. But they had little in the way of physical facilities and equipment to work with. Help came to them, however, in the person of the Reverend Frank Quarles, affectionately known by all as Father Quarles who volunteered the facilities of his church, the present Freindship Baptist Church, as a place to hold classes. 50, on April 11, 1831, in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church, Spelman College, known then as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, was begun. lfIt Was A Wonder. On April 11, 1881, the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary twhich in this brief account will hereafter be referred to as Spelman CollegeJ opened with a grand total of eleven students. News of the opening of the school certainly must have spread quickly, for three months later, there were eighty students enrolled. By 1882, over 200 were enrolled and attendance had to be restricted to young women over fifteen years of age. By contrast, the enrollment for the 1980-81 term was 1,367! Wh en The Misses Packard And Giles Arrived w l 'r . Ff. w, A t r! v I- xIu'ulmn - fu- th W a By The End Of 1882! By the end of 1832! Misses Giles and Packard, satisfied that their young school was growing into a successful venture. began thinking of a more permanent location. In 1383, then, the school was moved to a group of army bartacks suituated on the present site 0F the campus. From such humble beginnings. no location of its own in 1381, to several army barracks in 1583, lo a modern campus 0F 32 acres and 22 buildings in 1952, with another dormitoryr about to get underway, Spelman has show marvelous growth. The gruwth Of the young developing instilutien showed itself in other areas. This growth reveals not so much a shifting of emphasis as much as a broadening of purpose and sphere of operations. Misses Giles and Packard had as their main purpose the training of young Black women to be teachers. missionaries and church workers. Incidentally, attending chapel exercises was an impor- tant part of the training to become teachers, missionaries and church workers. Students of the 1980h5 upper classwomen particularly, can appreciate how different their situation vis-a-w's attend- ing chapel how we call it convocation'j is when they learn lhat until not too manyr years ago. students were required to attend chapel every day not at 11:00 but at 8:00 in the moming, As Far as proper attire was concerned. wearing slacks was not allowed on campus, except on Saturdaysiin the early days, though, slacks were not allowed at a1 . Spelman's purpose today is to give students a comprehensive liberal arts background through study in the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. To that end majors are offered in at least 23 subjects, and students are encouraged to prepare themselves for further study or for entering the work force in areas which, until recently, were not generally open to young Black women. But this broadening of- purpose did not happen all at once. When Spelman moved to the barracks location, opportunity for extending the curricu- lum became evident. Great emphasis was put on preparing teachers, through the introduction of a normal course. A college preparatory course was intro- duced, and an industrial department, which taught cooking, sewing, house- keeping, laundering, and printing assumed a high priority in the curriculum because of a desire to make education practical. In the decades of the 192055 and 30's, through the lapping off of the inductrial department, the discontinu- ance of the high school, the changing of the name and the emphasizing of the liberal arts curriculum to Spelman College the institution became accredited by the Southern Association of iberaI Arts tu tion. 'Students entering Spelman College,' in the fall of 1982 are impressed by the curriculum resources and the pleasant study surroundings offered by the spacious and beautiful Robert W. Woodruff Library. They have no acquaint- ance with Quarles Library, the learning resource center which, for many years, was located on the first floor of Giles Hall. This facility, the space which it occupied now taken by the Womenis Resource and Study Center, calls up fond memories and pleasant associations in hearts and minds of students who attended Spelman during itis existence. Both Quarles Library and the WoodruFf Library are a far cry From the Bible, pad, and pencil which were the only resources which Misses Giles and Packard had on that April day when they tought their first classes. 12 Oh! It Was A Wonder. Spelman College which began with no facilities or properties of its own has developed into an institution the physical assets of which are worth an increasingly large sum in the present financial market. It has become known both nationally and internationally. In 1900, 82 percent of its students were from Georgia; in 1982, Georgia students consistute only thirty-two percent of the total enrollment. A goodly number of students come from other countries, particularly from countries in Africa. 011! It Was A Won der. Spelman Has Achie ved Promin en ce In The Arts. 15:59! man Iytncinavt, JHaysta. Gan Spelman has achieved prominence in the arts. With the organizing of the Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman players and the Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman Chorusl Spelman College institutionalized a tradition of excellence in the arts which had been in existence fer some time. F0: it was in 1882, that the first joint concert involving Spelmant College tthen known as Atlanta Baptist Seminaryt was held; The Drama department tour of Europe with their production of jamaica and the annua tours of the Glee Club are tangible events highlighting Spelman's prominence in these areas, Oh! It Was A Wonder. Centennial Day, April 11. 1981, was a glorious day! The more 500 alumae who have passed through the classrooms of Spelman are a wondrous testimony to the vision of her Founde to the dedicated service of her many teachers over the years; to the faith and generosity of her benefactors, and to the ever present support of her students and alumnae. Mrs. Annie Alexander was so right! It Was A Wonder'! H , if they could only see it now! . . 16 t is a WONDER! The Yearbook staff hopes that our Spelman will aiways be a WONDER. Let us aii dedicate ourselves - alumnae; student facuity; administra- tion r- to keeping Spelman the institution that it is: an institution, all segments of which are con tinuaiiy in pursuit of excellence. in the words of President Stewart: Above ail, we must be good at what we do and, in fact, do what we say we do which is to produce outstanding young women who can compete and who will achieve in the iazger society. This we have tried to do for one hundred years. This we will contin ac to do. The Yearbook Staff acknowl- edges with sincere thanks and appreciation the kind permis- sion of Beverly Sheftaii and Jo Moore Stewart to use their Spelman: A Centennial Cele- bration as a vaiued source of information concerning Spel- man's early history. 1982 MMIEiIMng Introdutlion .......... l Hcadtmits .......... 18 Student Iife ........ 4o Brgauizations ........ 96 flassts ........... They promenaded down the white carpeted walkway Swaying in rhythm to the pul- sating inflections of the an- nouncers voice. They were 597 quence gowns and black tux- edos. Crowds greeted them with smiles and thunderous applause and then they greeted the Queen. It was a night they would never Forget because to- night they were in the spotlight. They had every right to be there because they too were king and queens. C orona tion We all participated in making the Morehouse Homecoming Coronation a success. This was the theme of the Spelman-Morehouse homecoming weekend. Practice for the much awaited coronation began two months ahead of time. During that two month period, one could see all of the courts practicing their routine dances just to make that one night, November 6, 1981, an unforgetable one. The homecoming parade took place the next morning. Clubs and other service organizations worked long hard hours the night before to finish decorating floats and cars For the parade; but the final outcome was worth all of the sleepless hours. The football game started hours later when we took on undefeated West Georgia. To cap the day off and thus the homecoming weekend, many students from the entire AUC attended the Maroon and White Ball to enjoy a night of dancing. Our friends in the dorms, our instructom, the administration and all those we interact with are im- portant pebple to us. By being surrounded by people at Spel- man, in Atlanta and in the world we are learning so much about ourselves and about working and living harmon- iously with others. In her smile, E in her studies, in her ac- tions and about herself; the Spelman woman is en thusf- astic. From the day she set foot on Spelman? campus she has been energetic in pursuit of her goals. She takes advantage of every opportunity to explore. The Spelman woman is enthu- siastic not only about her stud- ies, but her aspirations and helping others as well. She is positive about learning from her mistakes and enthusiastic in growing from them. There are many things that we are exposed to on Spelman's campus that serve to increase our enthusiasm. They are worId-wide speakers, fine arts presen tations, films on campus, literature and a staff of dynam- ic, energetic instructors. Most of all as we approach our second centmy of educat- ing achievers, we are enthusias- tic about being black women in an ever-changing society. 200 eadership. The women of Spelman Co!- Iege in preparing Gateways to a Second Century at this time would like to dedicate the 1982 Reflections to Dr. Roland Alli- son in recognition of his tireless and unending dedication to Spelman College. For over 16 years Dr. Allison has been instrumental in our growth and development at Spelman College. He is espe- cially noted for being the direc- tor of the Spelman College Glee Club, who are known through- out the warld by those who love and appreciate music. He has instilled in us a sense of pride and loyalty to ourselves and Spelman College. This is our opportunity to thank Dr. Allison for his years of caring and sharing. Always ready with a kind word and warm smile to make it all seem worthwhile. Dr. Allison has given us all stern persuasion and spent countless hours help- ing to shape as in to better Spel- man women and hence, better black women. Therefore, we, the 1982 Reflections Staff on behalf of the entire Spelman sisterhood salute Dr. Ronald AHison. mks: 2h 9w w' -Y- n: :12; Q.- Colophon The 1982 edition of the Spelman College Reflections was primed in an edition of 1400 copies by josten's American Yearbook Com- pany of Clarksville, Tennessee.
