Mrs. Margaret N. Curry, a graduate of Spelman College, received the M.A. degree from the University of Michi- gan. For two years i1946-48J she served as Dean of Women at Spelman and is presently associate professor of history. Dr. Edward B. Williams, teacher of economics at Spelman, is an exchange teacher from More- house College. He received his A.B. degree from Morehouse Col- lege and his MA. and Ph.D. de- grees from Atlanta University and Columbia University. Mrs. Lois B. Moreland joined the faculty this year. She teaches political science. Mrs. Moreland received the BA degree from Sarah Lawrence College and the M.A. degree from Howard Uni- versity and has completed course requirements for the Ph.D. de- gree at American University. DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE Dr. Howard Zinn heads the Department of Social Science. He received his A.B. degree from New York University and his MA. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia. Dr. Zinn is the author of several documentary films for National Educational Television and has recently written a book on LaGuardia. Dr. Zinn also sponsors the Social Science Club. Mrs. Elizabeth J . Macomson is an assistant professor of history and geog- raphy. A graduate of Spelman, she received her MA. degree from Atlanta University. Mrs. Macomson will especially be remembered for her work with the Thanksgiving Rally. Dr. Clarence A. Bacote, an exchange teacher from Atlanta University, teaches American history at Spelman. He received his AB. degree from the Univer- sity of Kansas and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chi- cago.

While at Duke University, Mr. West was a Woodrow Wilson Scholar. He also teaches courses in social smence. The Reverend Mr. Rakes phobgraphed as he conducf's a Vesper service. 2? Min Wes+ relaxes a1 home wi+h a book Our college minister, the Reverend Norman Rates, received his A.B. degree from Kentucky State Col- lege, and he holds the ED. degree from Lincoln University and the ED. and S.T.M. degrees from Oberlin Graduate School of Theology. Mr. Rates conducts daily chapel services and Sunday Vespers. He di- rects the Sunday School, Mid-Week Meeting and Religious Emphasis Week activities. He also spon- sors the campus chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. With all these duties Mr. Rates still finds time to be our friend and coun- selor. His doors are open to us at all timm.

DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH AND DRAMA Mr. Baldwin Burroughs is associate professor of speech and drama. He received his AB. de- gree from Wiley College, his MA. degree from Northwstern University, M.EA. degree from Yale University, and presently he is working toward his doctorate. Mr. Burroughs is a director of the Atlanta-MorehousewSpelman Players. Dr. J . Preston Cochran is associate professor of speech and drama. He re- ceived the AB. degree from Morehouse College, the M.A. degree from Atlanta University, and the Ph.D. from the Uni versity of Iowa. In addition to teach- ing, Dr. Cochran is also a director of the Atlanta-Morehouse-Spelman Play- ers.
