K360 REF ECTINS FOREWORD 'tA thing of beauty is a joy forever? The experiences we have had, the knowledge we have acquired within these walls, the four years we have spent here being shaped into better citizenshthese have been joyous. In this yearbook the Reflections Staff presents the people, the organ- izations, and the activities that have contributed to this end. We have tried to capture some of the beauty of these four years so that the memory of them will bring us joy forever. At the same time we have tried to produce a yearbook that exemplifies the qualities of a Spelmanite, one that maintains the standards and traditions of the institution that will arouse our fondest memories. WE were . .. as merry . .. as H16 day . . . was long. CLASS HISTORY The weather was beautiful on that day when we, the class of 1960, arrived on Spelmans campus to begin the first week of a four year stay at Spelman College. That first week was known as Freshman Orientation Week; and although many of us were skeptical as to what it would be like, we were anxious for it to begin. In the process of be- ginning the school year proper, we elected class officers. They were: Herschelle Sullivan, president; Delores Bette, vice president; J acquelyn Shivers, treasurer; and Barbara Simpson LeSeur, secretary. Before the year ended our developing minds had begun to show themselves; and at the beginning of the next school year when we returned as sophomores, we realized that we had already taken the ttGiant stepii over the threshold of college. We staged our first production during our sophomore year, and this was a ttfeather in our cap. The theme was ttAround the World in One Night? We initiated coopera- tion between the schools by soliciting talent from all of the colleges in the center. We were also victorious in the Founders Day Rally. And Marian Wright was elected the first sophomore to be a Merrill Scholar. Elated over our achievements and victories, we hardly knew that time was passing so quickly. Soon it was time for final examina- tions and summer vacation. The class officers for this year were: Mary Bacon, president; Delores Bette, vice presi- dent; Mary Echols, secretary; and Marjorie McClendon, treasurer. Mrs. Dorothy Gulley Greene was our sponsor. 46 We especially looked forward to our junior year, for then we would no longer be little sisters, we would be sWanig sisters. That year our leaders were: Mary Bacon,1 -::: president; Jacquelyn Shivers, Vice president; Marjorie McCIendon, secretary; and Mary Echols, treasurer. This year was filled with outstanding achievements for many members of our class. Clarice Walker was recipient of a Scott Paper Company award as well as being elected to ttWhois Who in American Colleges and Universities? Alsoi among ttWhots Who were Herschelle Sullivan and: Delores Betts. And this year Herschelle and Delores were1 also chosen to study abroad in 1959-1960 as Merrill Scholars. The most gala occasion of the 1958-1959 school year was our J unior-Senior Prom. The theme, ttUn Noir Mag- nifiquej, proved to be just thateafter a lot of hard work on the parts of both the Morehouse and Spelman juniors. This cooperation between the two classes was another ttfirst for the class of t60. We embraced our senior year with a twofold sensa- tion, happiness on the one hand and sadness on the other. We were happy because we knew that we had come thus far along the road to success. We were possessed with a feeling of sadness because we knew that this was perhaps the last time many of us would be together. This year many of the college events we had taken for granted took on new meaning for usethe Christmas Carol Concert, the Spring Concert, and especially Founders Day. At last there was only graduation left. A dream had become a reality. We leave these walls knowing we have learned a great deal from books; we have also learned a great deal from living, working and playing together. We have developed, at least in part, a philosophy of life. When, in tranquillity, we recollect the moments in our lives that have been beautiful and lasting, we will have these four years to remember. WE WILL REMEMBER Founders Day . .. The dances . .. The gossip sessTons . . . The Picnics . .. The c01d win+ers . T . The parfies . . . and The crazy fimes . . . -.---- - . --- SENIOR DIRECTORY ANDERSON, MARY, 1823 Tiger Flower Dr., N.W., Atlanta, Ga. FRESHMEN ON PARADE FOUNDERS DAY Spelman College was founded on April 11, 1881, by Miss Sophia B. Packard and Miss Harriet Giles in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church. Every year at this time the members of the Spelman family rededicate themselves him the ideals of our Feunders and our zeal to do good works in the spirit of our school. The formal services commemorating this event were held on April 10 this year. Our speaker was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was at once a solemn and gala 0c- casion as the seniors wore their academic regalia for the first time. The decoration of the plaques dedicated to the Misses Giles and Packard, the gymnastic activities, the rally and the family dinner were held on April 11. Georgia May, 1960 Dear Reader: This book commemorates the recollections that we encountered during a walk down memory lane. Confusion, excite- ment, fear of not meeting deadlines, and many other headaches all played their parts as we completed the venturesome assignment. But the 1960 Reflections has emerged. We, the editors of the Reflections of 1960, wish to express our deepest gratitude to all of you who helped to make this publication possible. We would like to thank the administration, faculty and staff, and especially our adviser, Dr. Helen M. Sanders. Special thanks also go to Mr. A. D. Partridge, our photographer. We hope that we have succeeded in our efforts to give you a pictorial record of an education fulfilled. Elizabeth McDugIe, Editor Mary Deane Echols, Assoc. Editor P.S.: Margie and Bertha hard at work. Margarine Sanford Bertha SIngFe'l'on Ilulll
