COMMENCEMENT As the Class of 1957 graduates, it'lis fitting that we should address afarewell to the era now closing and .21 greetmg .to the era new opening for 115.. . We are not alone' 111 our Commencement Day. Indeed, in 1957, all the peoples of the world are hurrying, through 611518 after Crisis toward some vast and historic Commencement Day ' Subject peoples 1n every part of the WOrld are seeking. to recapture their lost bii-thrights In our own county, raciaI segregation is giving way under sharp attack It seems their the road to liberty and quuality is ev erywherc widening into a broad highWay. ' - . Moreover, science and technology are. now. bringing world- wide abundance within practical possibility for the. very iiszt. time in human history. Although children have cried froth hunger, disease and exposure, and without hope of satisfaction, today we may at last expect that all these cries will be answered. ' . Hg. - The approach to this Commeheemcnt Day; however, is not 1111- marked by profound suffering and danger. The possibilities of equality and abundance still lie unrealized in the shadow of recurrent Violence, lingering deprivation, and the overwhelming threat of atomic holocaust.

The Class of 1957 graduates with the firm conviction that these are the pains hf birth, and not of death, which we are witnessing. Even as we take triumphant steps in Sisters Chapel, the world draws near the Commencement Day of an era more humane than any before it. Although we graduate from Spelman College today, 6111' years of study and worship and play here do not yet bear their finest fruit. In the striving, in the victories and defeats of our daily lives, in the support and help we offer to those we love,:and most of all, in the parts we play in hastening the new world era -? there the fruits of Spelman College will be born again and again. Thus, bf all that we have learned Ihere we value most the confidence in our own worth and abilities with which we go to meet these deeades. 5 No graduating students anywhere can say more of their college than that it nurtured them from adolescence to true womanhood. We believe this has been S'pelrnan Collegeas supreme centribution to us. In a large sense, then, the lamp of learning,'symbol of the Class of 1957, has been fueled by all of the far-iiung Spelman F amily, and especially by those who have been our fellow-students, Otir teachers, our guides toward Commencement Day.
