PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Physical Education has always been required of Spelman students, but in 1955 this Department began offering a major in physical education. Dr. Ellen Duvall Uer , is the head of this Department. She received her Ph.D. degree from New York Univemity. Other instructors are Mrs. Geneva Weaver IIan from ler , dance instructor, who received her B.S. degree at West Virginia State College and hcr M.S. degree from Columbia University; Miss Rowena Baker i2nd from righU, swimming instructor, who is a graduate of Howard University; and Miss Lucinda Edwards trightL who holds the 13.5. degree from Tuskegee Institute and the M. A. degree from Northwestern University.

NURSERY SCHOOL Mrs. Selma T. Richardson has been director of the nursery school since 1953. She received her AB. degree from Tuskegee Institute and her MA. degree from Teachers College, Columbia Univer- sity. In addition to her position as director of the nursery school, Mrs. Richardson teaches courses at Spelman College in child development and be- havior patterns of children. Assisting Mm. Richardson are: Mm. Rosa King, a graduate of Clark College; Mrs. Lena Sayles, a graduate of Tuskegee Institute and Ata lanta University; and Miss Betty Ruth Taylor, a graduate of Spelman College. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY Mrs. Jane Ross Hammer has been teacher of philosophy, ethics, and logic at Spelman since 1946. She did her undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina, and later received her MA. degree from the same unwemty.

He is a graduate of Lincoln Univcrsity and Oberlin Theological Scminary In addition to serving as College Minister, he is the teacher of Religion. SPEECH DEPARTMENT The Department of Speech, since 1954, has offered a minor in speech and drama to Spel- man students. Head of the department is Mr. Baldwin W. Burroughs, who is a. graduate of Wiley College and Northwestern University. He was awarded the M.F.A. degree by Yale University. 25
