SPELMAN COLLEGE ' ' Atlanta, Georgia 1831-1957 COMMENCEMENT As the Class of 1957 graduates, it'lis fitting that we should address afarewell to the era now closing and .21 greetmg .to the era new opening for 115.. . We are not alone' 111 our Commencement Day. Indeed, in 1957, all the peoples of the world are hurrying, through 611518 after Crisis toward some vast and historic Commencement Day ' Subject peoples 1n every part of the WOrld are seeking. to recapture their lost bii-thrights In our own county, raciaI segregation is giving way under sharp attack It seems their the road to liberty and quuality is ev erywherc widening into a broad highWay. ' - . Moreover, science and technology are. now. bringing world- wide abundance within practical possibility for the. very iiszt. time in human history. Although children have cried froth hunger, disease and exposure, and without hope of satisfaction, today we may at last expect that all these cries will be answered. ' . Hg. - The approach to this Commeheemcnt Day; however, is not 1111- marked by profound suffering and danger. The possibilities of equality and abundance still lie unrealized in the shadow of recurrent Violence, lingering deprivation, and the overwhelming threat of atomic holocaust. The Class of 1957 graduates with the firm conviction that these are the pains hf birth, and not of death, which we are witnessing. Even as we take triumphant steps in Sisters Chapel, the world draws near the Commencement Day of an era more humane than any before it. Although we graduate from Spelman College today, 6111' years of study and worship and play here do not yet bear their finest fruit. In the striving, in the victories and defeats of our daily lives, in the support and help we offer to those we love,:and most of all, in the parts we play in hastening the new world era -? there the fruits of Spelman College will be born again and again. Thus, bf all that we have learned Ihere we value most the confidence in our own worth and abilities with which we go to meet these deeades. 5 No graduating students anywhere can say more of their college than that it nurtured them from adolescence to true womanhood. We believe this has been S'pelrnan Collegeas supreme centribution to us. In a large sense, then, the lamp of learning,'symbol of the Class of 1957, has been fueled by all of the far-iiung Spelman F amily, and especially by those who have been our fellow-students, Otir teachers, our guides toward Commencement Day. SPELMAN HYMN Spelman, thy name we praise, Standards and honor raise ; W611 ever faithful be Throughout eternity. May peace with thee abide And God forever guide Thy heights supreme and true, Blessings to you. Through years of toil and pain May thy dear walls remain Beacons of heavenly light, Undaunted by the fight; And when lif6s race is won, Thy noble work is done, Oh, God, forever bind Our hearts to Thine. A four-year journey had been planned for the group and as they began it, the route marked out for them appeared dim. Not very long after- wards, however, a lamp, the symbol of the class, was given to them to illumine the way. The light flickered as the Caravan made the first year's joumey. Led by Ray Frances Chatman, president; Sharon Enix, vice president; and Ernestine Hill, secretary; the class achieved a victory when they won first prize for the class song written by Rebecca Garden and Jerolean Dorsey. Our light is shining, All the world rejoice. Our hearts are pining For your blessed choice. To you were singing With a cheerful voice ; To you dear Spelman Our hearts are true To you dear Spelman We will be true. Janie Butler received the May Sherer Mac Gregor Prize as the member of the freshman class who had made the greatest advance during the school year, academically and socially. The New York Spelman Club awarded LaVerne Savage 3. yeafs tuition, while Delo Washington became the recip- ient of the Adams-Hamilton award as the freshman who attained the highest scholarship record. The flame of the lamp soared a bit higher as the class entered its second year of travel. With Ray Frances Chat- man as president and Dollie Glover as secretary, the band witnessed more victories. Clara Lunceford and Alice Holly shared the Peter James Bryant prize. Ruth Etta Baines received the J. Louise Fowler Loyalty Fund Scholarship. With energy galore, the group harmonized their way to another victoiy as they again captured first prize for the pep song written by Rebecca Garden. Happy are the Sophomores On this Rally Day Do you know the reason? Listen what we say; We will win this race! We will win this race! This is why we are so happy We will win this race. The halfway mark of the journey was reached and the flame of the lamp shone brightly as it leaped still higher, for progress had certainly been made. As juniors, led by Rebecca Gorden, president; Olivia Johnson, vice presi- dent; and Prethenia. Kent, secretary; the class trekked onward. Further encouraging victories included the Florence M. Read. award, won by Dollie Glover, and the Amy Chad- wick scholarship, awarded to Barbara Ponder. Ray Frances Chatman received the Trevor Amett Scholarship, while Delo Washington became the recipient of the Peter James Bryan Prize. The group sang their way to another victory as they won first prize for the third consecutive time with the pep song. Weill all rise up together United we will stand. W611 all sit down together A happy Junior band. Well! keep alive in seventy-live We'll keep alive in seventy-five Welll keep alive in seventy-fwe We'll all r-i-s-e- up to-gether. We are seniors now and our journey is almost ended here at Spelman. Our lamp has served us well. In these four years, this lamp of knowledge, truth, and'love has led us to our present womanhood. We leave our well trodden paths behind us as guides for those who follow. Before us are wider and more challenging horizons to conquer. But we do not fear them or turn our backs to them because we know that as our light is shining now it will always be shining in the future, wherever we go.
