Principal of Spaulding High School '4There are no modern methods for developing within yourselves the traits of integrity, dependability, and a regard for your fellow man. Cherish these proven virtues, for upon such values depends our future as a nation. as-2 5,5 Dedication With respect and admiration we, the class of 1965, dedicate this anni- versary yearbook to our principal, Dr. Harry Grierson, in recognition of his outstanding service as an educator and citizen. He has been asso- ciated with Spaulding for all of its twenty-five years, an active contribu- tor to its history and progress. After graduating from Gorham Normal School he joined the Rochester High School faculty in 1929 as a teacher of Industrial Arts. At various times he also has taught math, science, and social studiesg and has coached football, basketball, and baseball. During World War II he served in the United States Navy as lieu- tenant commander. He rejoined the Spaulding staff, and after two years as assistant to the superintendent, he became principal of Spaulding in 1958. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire, a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia. The tone and climate of a high school is set by its chief administrator. Dr. C-rierson's deep pride in our school has radiated to us all, creating an atmosphere'in which faculty, students, and all other personnel may func- tion happily--with dignity and mutual benefit. Dr. Grierson is very proud of Spauldingg we are very proud of Dr. Grierson. x at X. HUNTLEY N. SPAULDINC Covcrnor of New Hampshire 1927-1929 .MFFQH LEON C. SPAULDING ROLLAND H. SPAULDING Governor of N cw Hampshire 1915-1917 5 Years Of Growth Named for the late Leon C. Spaulding, Spaulding High School was the result of a gift of over half the cost from former Governor and Mrs. Huntley N. Spaulding, former Governor and Mrs. Holland H. Spaulding, Mrs. Marion Spaulding Potter, and Mrs. Leon C. Spaulding, a grant from the Public Works Administration, and an appropriation from the City of Rochester. It was dedicated on September 9, 1939. We still think that Spaulding's appearance surpasses that of newer schools. When first constructed, Spaulding was considered one of the finest schools in the East. Such modern facilities as the projection room, the shops, and the home economics equipment drew many visitors. Sev- eral years ago a foreign language laboratory was in- stalled. Curriculum changes have matched the changing times. During the war there were courses in aeronautics and machine industries. Later, growing interest in industry caused the agricultural course to be dropped. New courses include Specch, Appreciation of the Arts, Electricity, German, and Physical Science. In April of 1963, Spaulding was evaluated and approved by a New England accrediting association. There are now twcnty-one peoplc enrolled in Spaulding's night school, the first credit-granting night school in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont. Rochester citizens as well as students have been faith- ful fans of Spaulding's athletic teams. During the 1956 and 1957 seasons, the football team won the Division 8 2 championship, the 1964- basketball team, second in the state, was invited to play in the New England tour- nament in Boston, and the baseball team won the 1958 Class L championship. Spaulding has also had good golf, tennis, and hockey teams. Various clubs have come and gone with changing interests and needs. There has always been a Red and White magazine, but the first yearbook was not pub- lished until 194-7. The Torch Club has been replaced by today's Key Club. The Camera Club and the Taste and Baste Club no longer exist. Other organizations have flourished, notably Masque and Dagger which won the New Hampshire Drama Festival in 1947, 1948, and 1961. Band and Chorus, once extracurricular ac- tivities, now meet during school and offer TIA: credit per year. Spaulding has indeed undergone many changes, and the main factor in these changes has been' growth. One concept, however, has remained as enduring as New Hampshire granite. This concept is exemplified by these words of Daniel Webster, inscribed on the dedication plaque in our foyer: If we work upon marble, it will perish. If we work upon brass, time will efface it. If we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But if we work upon men's immortal minds, if we imbue them with high principles, with the just fear of God and love of their fellow men, we engrave on those tablets something which no time can efface, and which will brighten and brighten to all eternity. This election was an edu- cational project sponsored by Mrs. Nedra Flaker and carried out by students of U.S. History and Contem- porary Problems. Before election day, students regis- tered, displayed posters in showcase windows, and listened to fellow students present party platforms in a school assembly. Voting procedures duplicated those of the national election, and students' names had to appear on checklists at both the entrance and the exit to the voting booth. The election resulted in an overwhelming Democratic victory. We later found we had previewed the national results. Voting Procedure p. There seemed to be only one logical solution to Grand Fenwick's financial difficulties: declare war on th United States, lose, become rehabilitated. But there wa one flaw in this scheme. Someone neglected to info Tully that the idea was to LOSE. His army, equippe only with the English long bow, defeated the Unite States! Through these stately portals will en- ter eager students for years to comeg from this school will graduate eager citizens, anxious to become competent leaders. For who could fail to re- spond to the high ideals inspired by daily association with the simple, yet magnificent, beauty of this building? Spaulding High School is not merely an ediiice wrought by man from brick and cement. This school is a gesture of noble generosity-a gift from one of Rochester's leading families, the Spauldings. Dedicated to the memory of Leon C. Spaulding, the building is symbolic of all that stands foremost in life. It will be with reluctance that graduates leave Spaulding High- but it will also be with pride. Ever will their Alma Mater be praised by them! For, Whatever path of life they may choose to follow, the alumni of this school will be influenced by the remembrance of the public- spirited family who made possible the opportunities extended by Spauld- ing High School. About twenty-five students, members of all classes, reported for the initial training period. All of these pupils had to be classed as novice debaters, as they.were without experience in interscholastic competition. After a lengthy orientation, the team candidates engaged in a series of competitive trials. Debating teams consisting of two students each were selected and their training period ensued. The national debate topic for the 1964-65 .season was: Resolved: That Nuclear Weapons should be Controlled by an International Organization. Some of our teams elected to uphold this solution, while the others negated it. Although all potential debaters were encouraged to remain on the squad as team candidates, some of them encountered activity con- W flicts and were forced to leave. The Debate Club finally consisted of the following teams: Bernard Klinger and Paul McBride, Daniel Hussey and Arthur Taylor, Daniel Moors and ,Shirley Wilsong Richard Stacy and Patricia Cilmang Eric Willard and Peter lVIcGurtyg Keith Phillips and lDonald Cundyg and Janie Soucy and Felicia Foss. l lnterscholastic debating competition was held with Dover, Somers- worth, and Portsmouth high schools. All of the administrative officers of the school department and of the high school were extremely cooperative in advancing the progress of the Debate Club. What is a Key Club? ls it merely another high school organization which meets once a week after school and is heard of no more? No. Key Club is a hard working, well orga- nized, service organization. Its members must be willing to work for others and in turn to better themselves. The individual's character and leadership qualities are revealed through service. Each Key Club member is constantly placed on a committee, directly responsible for the success of a particular project. Our projects are concerned not only with Spaulding but also are closely related to our parent organiza- tion, Kiwanis, and the community. It is a frequent occurrence to see Key Club members polishing trophies, conducting as- semblies, and in general creating a better at- titude toward today's teenage boys. ln order for the Spaulding Key Club to be considered the best in the state fan honor it has held for the past 2 yearsj it must constant- ly send, to the District Secretary, reports which may be awarded more points than other clubs. We have sponsored an assembly on teenage drinking and we have supported a vigorous anti-vandalism campaign. We have given Christmas parties at Frisbie Hospital, complete with Santa. Possibly one of the club's biggest permanent projects has been the purchase of an attractive bill board for the triangular park in front of the school. he State ,HQQQQ1-. 1'l X W. ,,lf -.. f! mlm? if ,,.. The spectators arrive slowly and sit in definite places, governed by custom. The band is positioned to the right of the press box. The team, jogging onto the field, receives a rousing welcome. The few Bradley rooters greet their team. As the captains meet the officials at center field, uneasiness filters into the air on the Spaulding side. We should win easily, but the disappointment of the last two games, against Dover and Somersworth, is still fresh in our minds. I32 During the early minutes of the first quarter, the anxiety mounts as neither team is able to move the ball effectively. Suddenly Spaulding strikes for a touchdown. Ecstasy replaces uneasiness. While Brad ley scores only once, Spaulding adds a touchdown in the second quarter and another in the fourth. Late in the fourth quarter, inexperienced players replace veterans. As the gun sounds, jubilant victors carry their three coaches from the field. Thus another foot ball season comes to a close. There are very few spectators in the stands, hut scattered over the infield are many small groups of track boys stretching leg muscles or taping ankles. At the broad jump and pole-vault pit, boys are measuring their steps and then running through to make sure everything is perfect. Over in the chute the sprinters and hurdlers are practicing their starts from the stocks. Groups of distance runners, warming up, pass me now and then. Their spikes make a quick crunching sound as they hit the cincler track, leaving patterns of holes. There are other noises like the sharp crack of the starter's pistol and the clang of a cross- bar as it falls in the pit. Whenever a race starts, cheers of teammates mingle with the voice of a coach telling his boys to pick up the pace. The public address announcer calls out the events and the winners. When a relay race begins the people are like the tides as they rush from one side to the other to see who is winning at each point. When the announcer calls for my event, I too will become part of this picture where something dif- ferent happens every minute.
