Breen Think big. , .' June 1975 marks the end of the first four full years of the existence of Spackenkill High School. These developing years have been excitingl The school enrollment is currently six times what it was on the day the school opened. We have witnessed the development of a full athletic program. Our teams have compiled enviable records. , Cultural events sponsored by the school, such as the concerts and dramatic productions, have been imaginatively and enthusiastically presented and well-received. The school activity program has grown from point zero to a current number of over thirty registered activities. lt is still growing! We have witnessed the growth and maturity of school publications in the form of a school newspaper and a yearbook, each of which can be characterized as being among the best. The academic program has similarly developed. Seniors are having little difficulty gaining admission to colleges and universi- ties. The Marist Bridge program has been developed to give certain students an unequalled opportunity for a head start in college. The work study program has opened similar doors to students pursuing a career in business. Our cooperative vocational program with BOCES has flourished. The list goes on and on. However, the success of the new high school is due to many other factors as well. Without the support of the residents of the district and the leadership of the Board of Education, there would be no Spackenkill High School. Without the dedication and enthusiasm of the secretaries, cafeteria personnel, and custodians, we could not have the warm personal atmosphere that stimulates the atmosphere for learning. We are blessed with a concerned, enthusiastic, and demanding group of professionals in the faculty. Mr. Rightmyer's contribution to the smooth operation of the school has been invaluable. Still, none of the above mentioned could have accomplished any of the successes evident in the school without the assistance of competent and concerned students. You, the class of '75, have made present accomplishments possible. You have set the pattern for the generations to come. You have probed, participated, and patterned. The tradition you have established as the first four year class of Spackenkill High School is a credit to you and to your parents. Congratulations and Best Wishes! fam John P. We met together during the end of our Junior year and during the summer to decide what our class wanted and how to attain these goals. Our major goal, aside from the monumental task of financing the Senior Prom, was to unite the class into one cohesive unit that would enjoy working together. That was the reason for our picnic the second week of school and the acquisition ofa Senior lounge. To raise money for our Prom, we had two dances and a Senior-Faculty hockey game and we sold message boards and mugs. The officers tried to get as many people involved as possible, and without the assistance that we received, nothing could have been accomplished. r I, as President speaking for all the officers as a group, would like to thank the many students who came to our assistance when the need was there. Our advisors, Ms. LaLonde, Mr. Parsons, and Mr, DeFlespinis, were a great help, and their advice and cooperation helped to make our activities successful. I would also like to thank Dr. Breen and Mr. Flightmyer for their assistance and support whenever it was needed. As President, my major satisfaction and enjoyment was the many fantastic and motivated students with whom I was in contact. When there was a need for help, the people were always there. Even if people did not volunteer their assistance, all that was needed was a simple request to get someone to do hisfher share. I would like to conclude by giving some advice to future officers about things that we have learned this year. First, make sure that your advisors always know about things that are happening. Request their advice, because, more often than not, they are aware of rules and regulations that you do not know about. Second, never let any activity get so big that one person cannot oversee it, especially early in the year. Make sure that people can do the job before you give them that job, and stay on top of things anyway. And lastly, enjoy what you do. An officer has a lot of responsibilities, to the class and to himfher self, but the results are rewarding and funl . UML! I have always heard that high school days are the best times of our lives and also the shortest. Now that they are over, I know that this is true. It seems almost like yesterday that we entered the new high school which was not even completely built. Look at it now. The school is filled with students and the building is begin- ning to get a look of wear . We, the class of 1975, have done much to build this school. We have worked and learned, played and had fun and grown up together, and we will al- ways carry memories with us. The basketball and soccer games and all the other sports, the music concerts, all the plays, dances and trips we have had, together with our school studies, have formed our school life. Each little part may seem insignificant by itself, but when taken together have formed the most unforgettable time of our lives. 150 Now ahead of us, we face a bigger task. There will be more people, more work, more hardships, and, hopefully, more fun and good times. l feel we are ready to accept the challenges that lie ahead. We have been taught and we have learned how to face problems and overcome them. These are the tools for success. What is success? Someone before me answered this question better than I. To laugh often and much: to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to learn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty: to find the best in others: to leave the world a little bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden path, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This to have succeed- ed. I wish the very best of luck to everyone and a wonderful life ahead, and above all success. Mag ji UQMCJ rr Mary K. Van Wagenen We, the editing staff of the 1975 KALEIDOSCOPE wish to express our sincere thanks to the following peo- ple who have dedicated their time and efforts to make this book a success: Dr. John Breen, Mr. David Rightmyer, Mrs. Mabel Kane, Mr. Dean Bushey, Mrs. Jackie Klein, Bruce Miller, John Lane Studios, and especially Mr. Brian Hawthorne, our Western Represen- tative, without whose help we NEVER would have made it.
