94' In 1884, exactly one hundred years ago this yean the town of Vermilionville changed its name to Lafayette. This was a time of great transformation. The completion of the Southern Pacific Transcontinental Railroad made this the eastern terminus for the two trains, the Atlantic and Pacific expresses. The arrival of this rail- road laid the economic foundation for modern Lafayette. It also marked the beginning of the city as a distribution, service, transport and edu- cation center for southwest Louisiana. Lafayette is now one of the fastest growing and dominant cities in the southwest US. It seems an appropriate place for the University of Southwestern Louisiana, which is now the sec- ond largest and fastest growing university in the state. The city and university are proud of their past and confident of a bright future. As the saying goes, We've only just begun!! t.Lru4k.1lAb!H2!l'wil2!f.kflQ.:iJa'x1 QQ! K v er ,, A yi -rs.
