Association for Computing Machinery In May, 1961, through the efforts of Dr. James Oliver, the University of Southwestern Louisiana Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery became the first such chapter authorized by the Association for Com- puting Machinery. Since that time, there have been twenty-four other organizations throughout the world which have attained student chapter status. The purposes of this organization are to pro- mote an increased knowledge in computer science and computer developments among members and to promote a greater interest in computing machinery and its applications among those not familiar with the computing field. Thus the student chapter provides an important relationship to the professional organization for the student in his chosen field and serves to enlighten the public concerning an expanding field of knowl- The Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery offers a basic and an advanced computer programming course to interested high school students in the area. As part of its educational program, the Student Chapter also provides talks and demonstrations to interested groups and presents movies on topics in the field of computing. Firjt Row: John G. Marching Band performs at all home football games and at the yearly out-of-town excursion. Area festival parades and all home basketball games are also attended by the Bulldog Band. The University Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. John Gilfry, presents a concert every winter and spring on campus. The express purpose of the spring tour is to interest high school students in becoming members of the U.S.L. Band. In addition, concerts are given every spring at area high schools and in the fall for the Business- men ' s Luncheon. S., one of the newer organizations on campus, has sponsored various activities during the past year including a style show for freshmen, awards for the out- standing freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior women. AWS and MSGA jointly sponsored the Freshman Mixer and Carol Night. The twenty-six officers of the Executive Board and the thirty-two members of the Dormitory Women ' s Council work together under the guidance of Miss Hilda Taylor, sponsor, in carrying out the functions of Associated Women Students. Band Club The Southwestern Band Club has four prime objectives. They are: 1. To continue the development of Music Appre- ciation and understanding through the study and performance of the best in available literature. 2. To develop competent teachers, conductors and performers. To lend color and atmosphere to certain athletic and student body events while promoting and en- hancing the dignity and reputation of the college through traditional on and off-campus appearances.
